Patron Workshop Snippet: September Makes Huge Progress in 8 minutes!

This snippet is somewhat magical! September explained she detects an unwanted covering of the sound which gives her a less ideal quality.  We go hunting for the cover and quickly find it. Her and I come up with a new approach to help fix the covering issue which explores do the oropharyngeal gradient with the vowel /uh/ then shifting the tongue position to the vowel /ae/ after the oropharyngeal brightness is added in.  This immediately solved her cover and allowed her to go much brighter.

In only 8 minutes her voice completely changes by the end! I hope others can find this quick breakdown helpful. This is how voice diagnostics look from my end. Every student presents unique problems which demands unique solutions.

I'm really proud of September's awesome efforts!

warmly,

I can get the shapes more or less, but not maintain them long without getting the feeling I am working too hard and maybe damaging myself. I am certainly holding back because I'm afraid to be heard while practicing or to sound fake, which creates additional tension.

It's rarely an issue of "strength". The overall process of voice is about control and precision. Some mild strength might need to be built but generally everyone has the capacity to do the right shape. There are just a near infinitely many number of shapes to avoid, haha.

Wow, this was really cool. Also, following along I could improve my own nebulous approach and hear where (in the third, brightest tone) I do not mange to open completely. At least not without feeling a considerable strain. Somehow I need to learn to get brightness in a much more relaxed way. ... Or is that just a matter of getting these muscles stronger, so they don't feel (slightly) overwhelmed by the effort any more?
