The Fallout 76 project, in retrospect

Now that the dust has settled on Fallout 76, I thought I would post a few updates about the current state of the channel.

For any new patrons: welcome.  There are a lot more of you than I thought would be signing on.  I understand if some of you were only here for access to the 76 video.  I appreciate your monetary support and hope to see you again when my next project comes out.  For those staying, I of course also appreciate your support.

The patronage shilling was somewhat accidental.  I lazily made a template censorship in the public version of the 76 video that would show on screen where you could find the uncensored version.  Not considering how frequent it is in certain parts (WASTELANDERS) this ended up shilling too hard.  Granted, there was the shilling-incident over on Private Sessions stream, but that was ironic and mostly to help kickstart his service as I had financially inconvenienced him by taking too long on my end of the project.

Offering uncensored, complete cuts early will continue to be my modus operandi going forward.  This is because I want to continue writing and editing the videos I want to make them, no matter how much YouTube does not want me saying the naughty-naughty 'fuck' word.  This is not conjecture: I am actively watching people in this genre struggle with these issues.

Self-censorship is sadly necessary for survival, but I still feel the way I am doing it is more authentic than the alternative: writing those things out of my scripts.  I frankly find this to be an insulting suggestion.

Think about the last time you heard one of your favorite content creators actually say a swear word.  I'm going to bet you can think of at least one that you didn't notice when they stopped swearing.  There are plenty of other sterile Influencers doing that, I will not add myself to that list.  Uncensored cuts are a new perk for my members.

Fallout 76 project, in retrospect.

While I could probably have retrospected on any one of the videos I've done on this channel, I feel this project deserves it the most.  Fallout 76 was an extremely complicated, convoluted mess.  Almost nothing about making this video was straightforward.  It was an enjoyable process, and I have had a full conversation with Private Sessions about it.  This is easily one of the most fun projects I've done.

But the video is a mess.  The censorship was out of my control.  I generally don't write swear words into my scripts.  Swearing was more frequent in this video than other projects, and that was owed to using more clips from playing the game and our rather candid playthrough.  We swore at everything.  The game was kind of miserable to play, so it just put us in a swearing mood.  I have since messed with doing less intrusive censorship, basically masking the word having even been there.

Onto the politics.  Politics is really nothing new for my channel.  The problem is that the broader political discourse has gotten, in a word, silly.  Simply saying the word "misogyny" triggers a fight-or-flight response in some people.  I get that, but I frankly think the discourse around my usage of the word has been, in a word, silly.  From the left side, you'd think I would have accused a developer of child murder.  From the other, well, I frankly don't understand the conservative outrage other than they are upset simply because I said a word that triggers them.

Misogyny is just a pattern of behavior.  And ultimately, yes, I WAS reading into the game.  That's the joke.  You can read into the game heavily and come out with some weird gigachadic meme about the game actually being based and redpilled on topics.  No, I don't think Bethesda are anti-vaxxers.  But combine that with the other things (election denial, pro-nuclear armament, the gold standard, glowing federal agents) it comes through a simple punchline: Bethesda can't even make a political statement without stepping on a rake.  That's the joke, thanks for playing.

There are comments stating my political opinions with unearned confidence.  Given that most of them are pretty far of the mark, I'm pretty confident that I did not, in fact, inject my politics into the video.  My policy remains the same: politics in the game: politics in the video.  Yes, Fallout 76 has all of that stuff in it.  There are literally multiple glowing agents, election voting machines being manipulated, a plotline about adopting the gold standard, and its presentation of women.

As for the rest of the video:
Fallout 76 was a project that refused to be predictable.  The scope of the project kept growing and growing because I was just continually finding new things.  I'm still learning things about that game.  Of the statement "art isn't finished, it's abandoned", 76 is probably one of the more abandoned projects I've done.   I was recording new voice segments for the 76 video during my Outer Worlds recordings.

It, as a game, just didn't deserve the 150 hours of chances I gave it IN PLAYTIME.  It is literally the second longest I've played a game on this channel, beaten only by the game that had a 20 hour video made about it.  Frankly, if the 76 community doesn't consider that giving it a second chance, they are delusional.

The project also just continued to grow and grow.  I am glad I decided to do it after Skyrim and not before, because it would have made the Skyrim video infinitely more stressful to finish due to the time consumption that this project was.  But the fun of the project pretty much ended at it being a collaboration.  I did the nuke montage first, that was really the only fun I had actually building the video.

I visited West Virginia for this video.  I don't think I discussed this enough in the video, because I was somewhat hesitant to work it in.  The script wasn't just done when the trip happened, the voice-over was recorded.  This was a test for a potential future longform video idea.  But it bloated the scope of my video, and for what gain on my end?  A couple shots so I could say "See, I visited the state, I CARE."  I do not regret this action, it simply contributes to the scope-bloat of the video.

76 was a nightmare of footage location.  If I could do it all again, I would have taken way more detailed notes during recording.  I had no idea I'd need them as badly as I did.  Some sections of the video just straight up sucked to put together.  76 was also a nightmare of writing.  I wish I had put a punchier section first, but that ultimately hurt the narrative of the video.  It was a somewhat unwinnable scenario when it came to writing the opening of the video.

Objectively, I think Private Sessions made the better of the two videos.  I usually view my videos completely unfavorably after release, so that may dissipate with time.  But I don't think it is one of my best works.  I also just think that it took too long to produce.

In conclusion:
These are my thoughts at present.  I will be making this a public post and sharing it.  I am willing to answer any questions about this project.  I will also be making another, private post to discuss my next projects.

Hey Patrician! After listening to your four previous long videos (and watching many of the shorter ones) I really don't mind giving you some support, you have more than earned it. The money spent to entertainment ratio is incredibly favorable in your case <3 On the other hand, I am glad you still want to make uncensored versions, and I am very much looking forward to them :) Keep it real!

I enjoyed your Fallout 76 video. In fact, I'd say it was better than your skyrim analysis in some areas - mainly humour. Also, while I think your 'politics' were incorporated seemlessly (mentioning that someone is sexist is not a political statement in my opinion), I think the majority of people criticised its inclusion is because a lot of media nowadays shoehorn in politics in a way that create a 'red team vs. Blue team' kind of mentality. The type where discussion is difficult because having different opinions from the hosts make you the 'bad guy.' So many content creators include politics in such a way that alienate audiences, so for your video, I think its either a case of a. General audiences not wanting to hear politics at all due to its potential toxicity or b. Certain members of the audience who disagree with your claim, even if just a little bit, mark you as the bad guy because they see your opinion as 'shoehorning' or that you're asserting that your viewpoint is objective, thus souring every other opinion you could have in their mind, then complaining about the entire video for a very minor section.

Richard Bob

I agree with your overall assessment. It's one of your worse videos, but, hey, it was still fairly entertaining. Also, the political jokes were funny. Anyone who was offended clearly has no sense of humor.

I thought the video was a little more "loose"-feeling, which made me not personally enjoy it quite as much as some of your others (I have still watched it several times but I prefer your TES / Dishonored stuff). Given that this is a sort of pioneering effort in the longform analysis of multiplayer games, where the format is not as well established as with singleplayer games, I think that's just in the nature of this project, although it sounds like the stress and how long it dragged on didn't help either. I also didn't take the political stuff as anything other than jokes and jabs at Bethesda but I'm also familiar with your work, so there's an understanding there. I'm pleased that your policy is more about reflecting what's present in the game rather than "taking a stand" when the opportunity presents itself.

The Birthday Duck

Thinking about it, maybe I just preferred private sessions' video because of the IRL segments?

Cyfaeras

Your level of patreon shilling is actually pretty low considering the utter state of YouTube at the moment. I thoroughly enjoyed your video, and whilst I do agree with you on PS's video being better... it's a very close call - you both really made the right choice by making complimentary videos, neither would be nearly as good without the additional context.

Cyfaeras

I thought the commentary was spot on, just in how they treated the female characters. It's the fact that the Angry Bossy Woman is yeah, a misogynistic trope, but also it's just lazy, bad writing more than anything. The political stuff is, well. You do have some people who are uh. Not the kindest people. That want to paste their viewpoints on you after extrapolating from one line in a 100+ page long script. I think it's sadly unavoidable. Be kind to yourself. Meanwhile, censorship of swearing is kinda wild. What a time to be alive.

Evie Wrath

I don't think you did anything wrong with the jokes about politics. Not gonna lie though, it's just that the political climate in the US is so volatile and full of nut jobs that saying something, even in jest, that can be construed as remotely political will piss someone off, conservative or liberal. It's the equivalent of tea bagging a hornets nest, sadly. I actually did think your comment about Bethesda's writing in regards to West Virginia's people was actually spot on though; having lived in the DC Metro Area and quite a few midwest states, there is a sort of elitist snobbery from places like Maryland, Virginia, DC, etc, about midwestern states; I believe the famous term is 'flyover state'. Really is a shame that Bethesda is not really capable of particularly interesting writing (Atleast in my opinion) anymore though. Even as far back as Oblivion (And Morrowind to an extent), there were warning signs; it wasn't really until Fallout 3 that we got to see how bad Bethesda's writing (And game design in some respect) was declining.

Hellbeard

I think yours and Private Sessions’ videos are both great and complement each other.

Spey

Honestly, it's just amazing you didn't give up on the project. I felt drained by simply watching it

Zapfenelch

YouTube desperately needs to rework their claim system, it's out of control lol.

Martian Mishaps

That's understandable man! Firearms are interesting, and can be fun but owning one is a different level of responsibility, which is why I personally don't have any at the moment lol. I agree with you there for sure.

Martian Mishaps

Also a good point. YouTube is becoming a very unwelcoming place for certain genres. I didn’t think videogame retrospectives would turn out to be one of those but here we are.

Nick Hughey

Yeah that’s totally fair! I’d never want to own a firearm, but I’ve been interested in going to a shooting range just to try shooting some targets. Or skeet shooting could be fun. I just grapple with my own weird feelings about looking at a deadly weapon as a toy I wanna play around with similar to wanting to go ride ATVs or something. I’d feel like a “gun tourist” or something if that makes sense. But of course I recognize there are nuances and degrees to everything and people can be interested in firearms for a number of reasons and it can be completely divorced from their politics or views on other topics.

Nick Hughey

I know people who enjoy shooting for the hobby and the engineering/modification angle to it, and most of them hate actual gun nuts lol. At the end of the day, different people nerd out over different things. Not every gun owner or hobbyist fit the "conservative gun nut" mold. I'm not accusing you of claiming that, you only briefly mentioned it. I'm just giving some of my personal experiences. (:

Martian Mishaps

i objectively know Pats political ideology. Anarcho-Bidenism Hitlerism Maoism

TruthRI

Hey man, while I can respect self-criticism, I think you're going a little too hard on yourself. You made a good video, and there's nothing wrong with trying to draw people to Patreon. This IS part of your livelihood after all. With the current state of YouTube, it's hard to know what you'll be demonetized or have a video claimed for. So I'm happy to throw a few bucks your way to have early access to a project, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. Just keep doing you man, I love your work.

Martian Mishaps

I'm glad you brought up the misogyny you saw. It can almost go unaccounted for in video games, and it's meaningful when it's dragged into the light for people to see, discomfort or no. As for the rest, I enjoyed the collaborative effort from yourself and PrivateSessions. I think it was a fantastic video.

LACRIMOTHRA

I genuinely didn’t notice any hot political takes in the video. I took the references to misogyny and bethesdas presentation of female characters as either jokes, intentional hyperbole or just factual observations depending on the specific instance. I did see the bullets you showed on your desk at one point and think you might be a gun nut, but ultimately those were just blips in a much greater work and i figured I’d give my focus to the many other points you made with intention, rather than minor points that were open to interpretation and injection of my own personal bias. Overall I enjoyed the video but i haven’t rewatched it to the extent of your other works. Could be due to quality as you stated, though i think it more likely it’s my lack of interest in fallout 76 specifically. Either way I’m glad to have more hrs of your narration to sleep to. The oblivion vid was becoming hard to sleep to because I knew it so well that it was almost distracting. Thanks for all the work you put into your content and I look forward to your future projects. Edit: spelling

Nick Hughey
