Hi David, thanks for this and sorry for the slow reply. I do know Eric's work - it's a good shout. I read the exchange with Moody, but not some of the other stuff - I'll take a look. Hope all's well with you.

finally, Blanc recently published an important book on the Russian Revolution and “revolutionary social democracy” that’s caused a stir among Marxists in and around DSA.

and here’s a good interview where Blanc defends his strategy against critiques from Kim Moody: https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/jacobin-radio/the-vast-majority-dirty-c-18UWoF_2x/

I didn’t find this interview particularly insightful on the party question. this is one area, I think, where the American socialist left is having a more sophisticated debate. Alex, are you familiar with the work of Eric Blanc on the strategy of the “dirty break” from the Democratic Party? Blanc argues from the historical experience of the early Labour Party, as well as some American examples like the Minnesota Farmer-Labor Party, that successful left party breakaways in first-past-the-post electoral systems generally begin as organized insurgencies within a major party, and are then forced out when they reach a certain threshold of threat to the party’s donors. Blanc’s arguments have been an important topic of debate within DSA since the first Bernie wave, I think listeners on the UK left could really benefit from learning about them.
