I think in the mid-late 2010's most people thought of a social media bot at "Pussy in bio" or "Check out this amazing product 👇 Link below 👇" or bottled subscribers and followerd with bunchanumbers username cardboard cutouts with no posts and while they were scummy and annoying and surely fooled some people it certainly didn't seem like something that could ever permanently alter a population's PERCEPTION OF REALITY. Not that there weren't many people ringing the alarm about it, there absolutely were.
