The Mage's Path: Chapter 31
Added 2025-04-14 12:23:00 +0000 UTCHi all,
Here’s the final chapter for last week. This week’s schedule will be posted tomorrow.
Chapter 31
Harry and Celeste emerged from the gate into the Shadowlands. He looked around to get his bearings.
They stood on the edge of a barren wasteland. Dead trees jutted from cracked earth like skeletal fingers, their branches twisted and bare against a sky stained the colour of faded bruises. Perpetual dusk shrouded everything in murky half-light. Rocky outcroppings punctuated the desolate landscape, and the horizon stretched endlessly in all directions, offering no landmarks to guide them.
A cold wind whipped across the plains, carrying the scent of decay. Harry rubbed his arms, suppressing a shiver.
"Do you have any memories of this place?" Harry asked. "Can you tell where we are?"
Celeste flew from his shoulder and spun in a slow circle.
"No," she said, returning to hover before his face. "My memories of this place are almost non-existent. Besides, this is a dungeon now. We don't know if anything has remained the same."
A notification pinged in his HUD:
======New Main Quest: Potter Ancestors
Description: The Shadowlands dungeon holds secrets of the player’s ancestors' desperate flight from their dying realm. Discover how the first Potters escaped and what drove them to cross dimensions, establishing a legacy in a new world.
Main Objectives:
Locate the original settlement where your ancestors first lived before escaping.
Find a Potter artefact in the settlement.
Discover what caused the Shadowlands' magical decay.
Rewards: 35,000 XP; 2 PP
Time Limit: 1 day
Quest Difficulty: High======
"It looks like this dungeon will be lucrative for both of us," Harry said, dismissing the notification.
He opened his menu, double-checking the current dungeon phase. As expected, they were indeed in the weapon phase, which meant no offensive magic. He'd prepared for this limitation, knowing from the gate's description what awaited them.
“Since we’re stuck with the weapon phase, I may as well learn another support skill,” Celeste said.
“Good call.”
Harry opened his menu and navigated to Celeste's skill board. The skill in question required four path points—a substantial investment, but her logic was sound. If the Shadowlands truly forbade offensive magic, her supporting role would become even more crucial.
======Shadow Catalyst | Active | Level 1 | Upgrade: (0/50) | Cost: 50 MP | Attribute: SPI/INT
Description: Enhances the target’s physical capabilities. The recipient's movements become more fluid, their strikes more precise, and their reflexes sharper. However, they are also more likely to receive critical hits.
*Increases target's attack speed and reflexes by 20% for 2 minutes.
*Increases target’s critical hit rate by 10% for 2 minutes.
*The target has an increased 25% chance of receiving critical hits. Repeated use in a short amount of time will increase the critical hit rate further.
*SPI > 40: Duration increased to 3 minutes.
*INT > 40: Buff can affect two targets simultaneously.
Upgrades to level 2 after 50 successful applications in combat. ======
It was a case of risk versus reward. While the skill was excellent, the drawback was high. If he were unlucky, he might receive a chain of critical hits that would quickly overwhelm him.
But he could see how the skill could stack with Celeste’s other support skills to dish out the damage. Dark Resonance also increased his critical hit rate, so he could see how overpowered the combination could get if you ignored the downsides.
Harry retrieved his Nimbus 2000 from his inventory.
"We need to get moving," he said, swinging his leg over the broom. "There's not much time to explore the dungeon."
Celeste dove into his pocket as Harry pushed off from the ground. The broom rose smoothly, carrying them ten metres above the desolate landscape. He chose north arbitrarily and leaned forward, accelerating gradually as he adjusted to flying in the unfamiliar environment.
The terrain below scrolled past—more dead trees and wasteland. After several minutes of uninterrupted flight, a disturbance in the distance caught Harry's attention. Dark shapes appeared in the sky, moving with unmistakable purpose.
"Company," Harry muttered, slowing the broom.
The shapes drew closer, resolving into a flock of winged creatures. Their bodies appeared insubstantial, composed of writhing shadows that constantly shifted and reformed. Membranous wings stretched from amorphous torsos, propelling them forward with surprising speed.
Harry descended quickly, knowing he'd be too vulnerable in the open air. As his feet touched the ground, he pulled two golems from his inventory. The Groves materialised beside him and immediately positioned themselves protectively in front of Harry.
The shadow beasts dived, releasing keening wails. The first creature crashed against Grove's shield.
"Scan," Harry said, drawing his Inferno Blade.

Assimilation: ????
========
Exp: 75 [Base 53 + 1 per level] Loot: 20 pounds; Shadow Essence; ???
Bestiary Entry: 0/10 defeated.
Description: Shadow Wraiths are remnants of creatures that died during the Shadowlands' collapse. Neither fully alive nor dead, they exist in a state of perpetual hunger, devouring anything with life essence. Their semi-corporeal nature allows them to phase through solid matter to ambush their targets. ======
"Harry, watch out!" Celeste's warning cut through his concentration.
Too late, Harry registered the monster's Phase Shift ability. The Shadow Wraith he'd been scanning passed through Grove’s wooden frame, its claws reforming into solidity just before they struck.
Harry twisted sideways, the movement born of countless hours of dungeon combat. The wraith's attack missed his face by centimetres, talons slicing through empty air where his head had been moments before.
He countered with a swift upward slash of the Inferno Blade. The weapon's fire enchantment flared as it connected, black flames erupting along the wraith's form. It screeched, pulling back as portions of its shadowy substance burned away.
Three more wraiths dived toward him. Grove intercepted one, a wooden shield catching it mid-flight. The golem's fist crushed the creature against the shield's surface. Another wraith phased through the second Grove’s defensive stance and re-materialised directly in Harry's path.
"Shadow Catalyst!" Celeste called. “Dark Resonance.”
The two enhancements washed over Harry. His reflexes sharpened, each motion becoming more fluid as the buffs took effect. The Inferno Blade whipped through the air with increased speed, catching the Wraith across its torso.
He scored a critical hit. Black flames devoured shadow flesh, reducing the creature to wisps of darkness.
Two more wraiths circled overhead, their keening wails intensifying as they prepared to dive. Harry dropped into a defensive stance, the Inferno Blade held before him in a two-handed grip.
"Defensive formation three!" he commanded.
The golems shifted, creating a triangular formation with Harry positioned at the rear. As the wraiths dived, both golems swung their wooden shields upward in perfect synchronisation. One wraith crashed against Grove's shield, while the other phased through the second Grove’s defences.
Harry anticipated the manoeuvre this time. He pivoted on his heel, bringing the Inferno Blade around in a horizontal arc precisely where the wraith would re-materialise. The timing proved perfect—his blade connected as the creature became solid again.
"Four o'clock!" Celeste warned.
Harry didn't question the direction, immediately dropping into a crouch as another wraith passed through the space where his upper body had been. He thrust upward with the Inferno Blade, catching the creature from below. It dissolved into embers, its dying wail fading into the perpetual dusk.
The remaining wraiths circled more cautiously, assessing their prey with greater wariness. One broke formation, executing a steep dive toward Harry's exposed flank.
The Inferno Blade became a blur of motion, cleaving through two wraiths in rapid succession.
With a unified shriek, the remaining three wraiths attacked simultaneously from different angles. Grove caught and crushed it against his shield. The second Grove intercepted another, wooden tendrils erupting from its arm to ensnare the creature before it could phase. It bashed the monster on the ground until the monster disintegrated.
The third wraith phased directly through both golems, aiming for Harry's back. Without turning, he thrust the Inferno Blade behind him in a reverse grip. The blade connected with solid shadow as the wraith re-materialised, its momentum carrying it directly onto the waiting edge.
"Behind you!" Celeste shouted.
Harry spun, blade extended. The weapon sliced through the final wraith as it attempted to ambush him from above. Black flames consumed it, leaving nothing but wisps of darkness.
"Not much HP on these things, but they make up for it in numbers," Harry muttered.
Celeste buzzed around his head. "Your fighting skills have improved. I barely needed to warn you at all."
"Those grinding sessions paid off," Harry replied. "Your new skill helped as well.”
He stooped to gather the loot. The shadow essence were little orbs of swirling darkness that writhed in his hands. He shuddered at the sensation and quickly placed them in his inventory.
Harry brought up his menu, accessing the bestiary entry he'd just unlocked. Something had caught his attention while scanning the Wraith, but he hadn't had time to process it.
Harry frowned. The trait—Dying Embers—alerted the other monsters to his presence. It spelled trouble. Just how many monsters were in this dungeon?
A high-pitched cackling sound broke through the silence. Harry spun around, his hand already reaching for the Inferno Blade. A pack of shadow creatures raced across the cracked earth towards them—sleek, canine forms with elongated limbs.
"We need to leave," Harry said, returning the golems to his inventory.
"Why? We can take them."
"It's not them I'm worried about."
Harry swung his leg over the broom and kicked off hard from the ground. Celeste darted upward, landing on his head and grabbing fistfuls of his hair for anchorage as they shot into the sky.
As they flew away, they watched as more shadow monsters converged on the spot they'd just vacated—not just canines, but spindly, spider-like monstrosities and lumbering behemoths. It appeared as if the ground was moving, they were so numerous.
"What's going on?" Celeste asked.
"Trouble," Harry answered, leaning forward to increase their speed. "When we killed those wraiths, they alerted the others."
Celeste's grip tightened in his hair. "Do we have to deal with this every time we kill monsters?"
"Maybe."
"Then it's better if we avoid fights."
Harry snorted. "It's not going to be that easy."
He pointed ahead where a dark mass had appeared on the horizon—a massive cloud of wraiths, hundreds strong, their shifting forms blotting out the sky as they hurtled towards them.
"Hold on," Harry said. "We need to find a place to hide. There are too many of them."
He swerved east, accelerating to the Nimbus's maximum speed. The broom vibrated beneath him, straining against the punishing pace. Minutes stretched as the flock pursued them across the wasteland, neither gaining nor losing ground.
After what felt like an eternity, Harry spotted structures ahead—crumbling stone buildings half-reclaimed by the hostile environment, arranged in the unmistakable pattern of a settlement.
He dived towards the ruins, banking hard to avoid a partially collapsed tower. The Nimbus slowed just enough for him to leap off and stash it in his inventory in one fluid motion.
"In here," he hissed, ducking into a building with most of its roof still intact.
They pressed against the inner wall as the sky darkened further, the wraiths descending upon the settlement in a writhing mass. Their keening wails penetrated the stone walls, setting Harry's teeth on edge.
"Shadow Veil," Celeste whispered, and the shadows coalesced around them both, concealing their presence.
The building's walls might as well have been paper for all the protection they provided. If the Wraiths found them, they would phase right through the walls. Harry tried to quiet his breathing, painfully aware of each wraith that passed over the crumbling structure.
An eternity passed before the keening wails began to recede, the wraiths moving on to continue their hunt elsewhere.
"That was too close,” Celeste muttered.
Harry smiled. “This dungeon is proving to be interesting so far.”
Celeste snorted. “That’s one word for it.”
Harry rose to his feet and approached the window. He pushed the ratty curtain aside and peered cautiously outside. No sign of the wraiths.
"Let's take a proper look around,” Harry said. “This settlement might be what the quest wants us to find."
They emerged cautiously from their hiding place. The settlement stretched before them—a collection of stone buildings in various states of decay, arranged in a roughly circular pattern around what might have once been a central square.
They picked their way through the ruins methodically, looking for any sign of previous inhabitants. Most buildings contained nothing but dust and debris, their contents long since rotted away.
In the largest structure, Harry spotted something in the corner, buried under some rubble. He carefully moved the obstacles out of the way and uncovered a treasure chest.
"At least there’s something worthwhile in this dump," Celeste said, hovering over his shoulder.
The lock broke easily under the Inferno Blade's edge. Inside, nestled on a bed of velvet now rotted and faded, lay a weapon unlike any Harry had seen before—a small whip with a handle of polished obsidian and a lash composed of braided thorns.
"It's for me," Celeste breathed.
Harry used Appraisal on the weapon:
======Shadow's Reach | Level: 15 | Rare | Type: Weapon | Enchantment Slots: 1
Description: A whip designed for fairy use, capable of growing to match the wielder's will. The lash can expand and extend to twenty times its resting size, but it requires some of the user’s mana.
*Deals moderate damage for its level.
*Damage scales with Willpower rather than Strength.
*Can extend up to 3 metres.
*15% chance to inflict Bleeding status for one minute.
*5% chance to inflict an additional Bleeding status for double dot.
Durability: 250/250 ======
Celeste gripped the tiny handle in both hands, her eyes wide with excitement. The whip seemed to respond to her touch, the shadowy lash extending and contracting with subtle movements of her wrist.
"It's perfect," she whispered, executing an experimental flick. The lash extended to twice her body length, slicing through the air with a soft hiss. "And it hardly weighs anything."
Harry grinned. "More importantly, it gives you the ability to deal damage in this dungeon."
Celeste cackled. “Where are the monsters? I want to dish out some pain.”
“Take it easy. We’re supposed to avoid fights, remember?”
“I don’t recall such a conversation.”
Harry shook his head. He surveyed the crumbling settlement and checked his minimap one final time.
"I don't think we'll find anything else here," he said. "The map shows we've explored the entire settlement. Let's eat before we head out. I want the bonuses in case we encounter more monsters."
Celeste nodded, settling onto a broken wall as Harry retrieved food from his inventory. The French dish provided the combat buffs they needed in this hostile landscape.
Once finished, Harry summoned the Nimbus 2000 and he flew out of the settlement. This time, he kept lower to the ground, ready to react if another flock of wraiths appeared.
Just beyond the settlement, they discovered a murky river stretching endlessly in both directions. As they hovered, something broke the surface—a sleek, elongated head with glittering obsidian eyes—before disappearing beneath the dark waters.
"Did you see that?" Celeste whispered.
Harry nodded, pulling the broom higher. "Let's follow the river north. Settlements are typically built near water sources. We might find something upstream."
They followed the river's winding course. Whenever Harry spotted movement on the ground, he climbed higher to avoid detection. Fortunately, the skies remained clear of wraiths.
After flying for nearly an hour, an anomaly appeared a few kilometres out from the river—a massive canyon, its depths obscured by an impenetrable darkness that hung like a physical barrier across the opening.
Harry's magic senses prickled. Something about the canyon called to him, an instinct he couldn't explain.
"We need to check this out," he said, banking towards the canyon's edge.
He landed and walked cautiously forward to peer over the edge. The darkness seemed solid, yet when he reached out, his hand passed through it.
"What do you think is down there?" Celeste asked.
"I don't know. But it might be important."
"And it may lead us to doom."
"Only one way to find out."
"Oh boy," Celeste sighed, settling on his head again.
Harry summoned his broom and cast Magelight. The spell produced a brilliant orb hovering above his palm, illuminating the canyon's edge in stark relief. With a deep breath, he mounted the broom and dived into the darkness.
The Magelight proved utterly useless, swallowed by the unnatural darkness. Harry descended blindly, slowing his speed to avoid crashing into whatever waited below. After a minute of tense flying, the darkness suddenly gave way, and the Magelight reappeared, illuminating a vast expanse beneath them.
He landed on solid ground and stowed his broom. The light revealed one side of the canyon—a sheer cliff face that rose into the darkness above. The opposite wall stood too far away to see.
"My fairy instincts are tingling," Celeste whispered, pressing closer to Harry's ear. "This is not a place we should be. Do you feel like someone's watching us?"
"No, but you're more perceptive than me. There may be a monster lurking out there. Stay alert."
Harry began exploring, using the cliff face as a guide while his minimap slowly revealed the area. Soon, he too felt the uncomfortable sensation of being watched, making his muscles tense in preparation for an attack.
After several minutes, they encountered strange black vines growing along the wall. They writhed when the Magelight touched them but seemed otherwise harmless. Harry used Appraisal:
=======Shadow Creepers | Rare | Effect: Crafting Material | Quality: High
Description: These parasitic vines can be used to make valuable potions. When processed correctly, they can make night vision potions or create temporary invisibility effects. =======
"Definitely worth harvesting," Harry muttered, unsheathing his dagger.
The vines attempted to entangle his arms as he cut them, but he easily avoided their sluggish movements. They reminded him of Devil's Snare, though considerably less aggressive.
With a decent harvest secured in his inventory, they pressed onward. The canyon floor gradually narrowed until they reached a cave entrance barely wide enough for Harry to pass through.
He directed the Magelight into the opening but couldn't see an exit on the other side. After affixing the magical orb to the cave entrance to serve as a beacon, Harry ducked inside.
The passage twisted sharply, forcing them to navigate by touch along damp stone walls. Strange echoes bounced through the tunnel—scraping sounds, distant drips, and occasionally what sounded disturbingly like whispers.
"I don't like this," Celeste hissed.
A scratching noise erupted somewhere behind them, sending Harry's heart racing. He spun around, Inferno Blade drawn, but the passage remained empty.
"This place is playing tricks on us," he muttered, though his grip on the weapon remained tight.
They continued forward until the passage narrowed dramatically, leaving only a crawlspace barely wide enough for Harry's shoulders.
"I'm not going through there blind," he said, studying the dark opening.
Celeste nodded. "Let me send my shadow ahead."
She closed her eyes, focusing on her Shadow Orb. A small, inky form materialised—a weasel composed entirely of darkness.
It was her latest creation that she had been working on for the past few days. Weasels made for excellent scouts, although Harry didn’t think Celeste considered this when choosing the animal.
The shadow weasel sniffed the air before slipping into the cramped tunnel.
Harry and Celeste waited in tense silence. One minute passed. Then two.
Suddenly, Celeste gasped, her eyes flying open.
"What's wrong?" Harry demanded.
"My link to my shadow was severed. Something's wrong."
A scuttling sound emanated from the crawlspace—rapid, frantic movement heading straight toward them. Harry raised the Inferno Blade as the noise grew louder. The space was too confined to summon one of his golems.
"Get ready," he whispered, bracing himself as the scuttling intensified.
The creature burst from the tunnel in a blur of pale limbs and wild, bulging eyes. Harry barely had time to register its emaciated frame before it launched itself at him, fingers splayed like claws, teeth bared in silent fury.
He brought the Inferno Blade up in a defensive arc, black flames trailing through the air. The blade connected with a surprisingly solid thud, sending the monster reeling backwards. It hissed, pawing at the smoking gash across its chest.
"My turn!" Celeste darted forward.
Shadow's Reach uncoiled in her grip, extending to five times her body length. She flicked her wrist with surprising strength for her size, the thorned whip lashing across the creature's bony shoulder. Dark blood welled from the wound, dripping onto the stone floor.
The creature scuttled back, its movements jerky and unnatural. Harry's stomach turned as he took in its appearance—sickly pale skin stretched taut over a skeletal frame, with knobby joints and overly large hands. Its eyes bulged from their sockets, filled with malevolent intelligence. A loincloth of tattered leather was its only covering, and it clutched something in its right hand—a crude stone knife.
"Scan," Harry murmured, keeping the Inferno Blade at the ready.

=========
Exp: 2000 Loot: 400 pounds;
Shadow Stalker Eye; ???
Bestiary Entry: 0/1 defeated.
Description: Shadow Stalkers are cunning predators that haunt the darkest corners of the Shadowlands. Their emaciated, pale bodies belie their surprising strength and agility. They possess uncanny intelligence, ambushing their targets and collecting tokens from them. The eyes of Shadow Stalkers are prized for their ability to see in absolute darkness, while their venom-coated blades can cause slow, painful death if left untreated.
=======
"Careful," Harry warned, circling to his right. "It's an elite monster. That knife might be poisoned."
The Shadow Stalker lunged again, its body twisting unnaturally in mid-air. Harry sidestepped, but the cramped tunnel limited his movement. The stone knife grazed his arm, tearing through his sleeve.
Harry's HP: 380/400
Pain flared across his forearm as blood welled from the shallow cut. The wound burned more intensely than it should have, confirming his suspicion about poison.
"Shadow Catalyst!" Celeste shouted, empowering Harry with her support magic.
Enhanced reflexes kicked in just as the Shadow Stalker struck again. Harry parried with the Inferno Blade, knocking the creature off-balance. He pressed his advantage, delivering three quick slashes across its torso.
Shadow Stalker's HP: 422/500
The monster shrieked—a sound like fingernails on slate—and melted into the shadows along the wall. It reappeared behind Harry, its knife aiming for his kidneys.
"Six o'clock!" Celeste warned.
Harry dropped into a low crouch, the blade passing over his head. He pivoted, driving the Inferno Blade upward, but the creature had already skittered away, climbing partway up the tunnel wall.
"Dark Resonance!" Celeste amplified her power, then cracked her whip against the ceiling.
Chunks of stone rained down on the Shadow Stalker, forcing it back to ground level. It snarled, revealing rows of needle-like teeth, and charged again.
Harry met the charge with gritted teeth. The creature's knife and his blade locked together, strength against strength. Despite its skeletal appearance, the Shadow Stalker pushed with surprising force, driving Harry back step by step.
His heel caught on a rock, throwing him off-balance. The Shadow Stalker sensed weakness and redoubled its effort, its blade inching closer to Harry's throat.
Celeste's whip cracked again, wrapping around the creature's ankle. She pulled with all her might, throwing her tiny body into the effort. The Shadow Stalker's leg jerked backward, breaking its leverage.
Harry twisted away from the knife and slashed downward, severing the creature's hand at the wrist. It screeched in pain and fury, black ichor spraying across the tunnel floor.
Shadow Stalker's HP: 372/500
Before it could retreat, Harry drove the Inferno Blade through its chest, pinning it against the wall.
Critical Hit! Shadow Stalker's HP: 267/500
The Shadow Stalker twitched, its bulging eyes fixed on Harry with unmistakable hatred. Its remaining hand shot out with blinding speed, fingers curling around Harry's throat, squeezing with inhuman strength.
Harry's HP: 350/400
Stars danced across Harry's vision as his windpipe constricted. He tried to pull back, but the creature's grip was like iron. The poison from his earlier wound began spreading through his system, further sapping his strength.
Harry's HP: 335/400
"Let him go!" Celeste shrieked, lashing repeatedly at the monster's face with Shadow's Reach.
The thorned whip opened deep gashes across the Shadow Stalker's bulging eyes. It howled but maintained its stranglehold on Harry.
Shadow Stalker's HP: 240/500
The Inferno Blade remained lodged in the creature's chest, black flames slowly eating away at its flesh. Harry grabbed the hilt with both hands and twisted, grinding the blade deeper.
Shadow Stalker's HP: 210/500
With a final desperate effort, the Shadow Stalker ripped the blade from its own chest and hurled it aside. The wound gaped, spewing dark ichor, but still it maintained its grip on Harry's throat.
Harry's HP: 245/400
His vision began to tunnel. Working purely on instinct, Harry drove his knee upward into the creature's wounded torso. The blow connected with a sickening squelch, his knee sinking into the gaping wound left by the Inferno Blade.
Shadow Stalker's HP: 180/500
The monster's grip slackened. Harry broke free, gasping for air, and rolled toward his discarded weapon. The Shadow Stalker scuttled after him, its movements frantic now, sensing its impending defeat.
Celeste darted between them, Shadow's Reach singing through the air. The whip caught the monster across its face, opening another deep gash that sprayed black ichor across the tunnel walls.
Shadow Stalker's HP: 155/500
Harry's fingers closed around the Inferno Blade's hilt. He spun, bringing the weapon up just as the Shadow Stalker lunged once more.
The blade caught the creature under its chin, the momentum of its own attack driving the edge deeper. The Inferno Blade erupted through the top of its skull, black flames engulfing its head.
The Shadow Stalker convulsed, its limbs thrashing wildly. Black ichor poured from its wounds, sizzling where it hit the tunnel floor. With a final gurgling screech, it collapsed, its body dissolving into shadowy particles that scattered across the stone.
Harry slumped against the wall, his breathing ragged, throat bruised where the creature had gripped him. Blood trickled from the poisoned wound on his arm, the skin around it turning an alarming shade of purple.
Harry's HP: 150/400
"We need to treat that poison," Celeste said.
Harry nodded, rummaging through his inventory for an antidote. His hand closed around a small vial, and he uncorked it with his teeth before pouring it into his mouth. The effect was immediate—the burning sensation receded, and the purple discolouration began to fade.
"Let's hope there aren't more of those ahead," Celeste said, coiling Shadow's Reach around her waist like a belt.
Harry retrieved a health potion from his inventory and downed it in one gulp. He felt a lot better after watching his HP recover.
"Onwards," Harry said, pushing himself to his feet. "We can't turn back now."
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Harry and Celeste emerged from the narrow cave passage, relieved to be free of the claustrophobic place. The piercing light struck their eyes. After so long in darkness, the change was jarring.
"Bloody hell," Harry breathed, shielding his eyes.
Before them stretched a landscape utterly unlike the blasted wasteland above. Lush greenery covered every surface—vibrant moss carpeted the ground, ferns sprouted from cracks in ancient stones, and flowering vines climbed the walls. A gentle river wound its way around the perimeter of the massive cavern, its waters crystal clear rather than murky. Despite being underground, the chamber was bathed in soft light with no discernible source.
Harry turned in a slow circle, trying to comprehend what he was seeing. A stone bridge arched over the river, leading to the main area.
"Am I dreaming? Pinch me," Harry muttered.
Instead of pinching him, Celeste unfurled Shadow's Reach and flicked it against his arm with a sharp snap.
"Ow! What was that for?"
"It's a lot more effective than a pinch," Celeste replied, looking entirely too pleased with herself as she coiled her whip.
"Right." Harry scowled, returning his attention to the verdant chamber. "What do you think this place is? How can it exist in the Shadowlands?"
Celeste flew higher, surveying the expanse. "I don't know. There's only one way of finding out."
Harry nodded and approached the stone bridge. It was old but solid, spanning the twenty metres to the central island with elegant arches. Moss and lichen clung to its surfaces, softening its angular contours.
As they crossed, Harry noticed strange carvings etched into the stone balustrade—symbols similar to those he'd seen on the tablets from Potter Isle. He traced them with his fingertips, feeling a connection to those who had carved them centuries before.
The moment his foot touched the soil on the other side, a notification appeared in his HUD:
======You have entered the Beast Sanctuary. This is a safe zone. Monsters cannot enter this area, and all your resources will regenerate while you sleep here. There is no bed, but sleeping anywhere will have the same effect. ======
"Beast Sanctuary?" Harry read aloud, dismissing the notification. "What does that—"
A thunderous roar interrupted his question, echoing through the cavern. Harry's head snapped upward. His jaw dropped as over a dozen massive shapes descended from hidden recesses in the ceiling—leonine bodies with powerful wings.
"No freaking way," Harry whispered, watching the Grievers bank and circle before landing on the island, their massive paws barely disturbing the vegetation beneath.
One beast, larger than the others, approached them. It regarded Harry with intelligent eyes, sniffing the air cautiously.
"At least we know now where the Potters got the Grievers from," Celeste said.
So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Harry and Celeste continue their exploration, and he schemes a way to take the Grievers out of the dungeon.
Thanks for reading.
