In Gamergate 1.0 Milo Yiannopolous successfully made the same play, going from a well-combed stock conservative columnist who'd more or less said gaming is for babies and losers, to the flamboyant gay nazi superstar of the movement just by pandering to them. Before he went broke and faded back into irrelevance, he was deified enough to get a starring role cameo in a *new Postal 2 expansion* released in 2015, 12 years after the last one. Considering that you have to take the happy crumbs you can get with these things, I'm *delighted* to hear it didn't work this time hahahahahaha

And the main reason people do all this is because acknowledging that society is becoming more accepting and pop culture is just reflecting that would be acknowledging that they’re losing the culture war and they can’t admit that so they need to make up stories about forced woke agendas and blah blah blah

2024-03-22 12:43:40 +0000 UTCIt clicked for me when you said it that the way "Blackrock" has been used here and over the last year really does seem like a new magic spell to replace "Soros" for the same purpose. And that got me thinking that this shift is really fucking frustrating for two reasons: A) The thing where one has to disclaim that there are valid reasons to be critical of things Soros has actually done from a leftist perspective and that pointing out this invocation of his name isn't denying that, kind of applies tenfold to Blackrock. Whatever his flaws, he's at least tried at times to apply cosmopolitan liberalism in a way one can't say about that kind of entity. B) It's obviously still a stand-in for "(((international finance)))", but harder to illustrate the antisemitic connections to anyone who's not already fluent enogh in online frog to get it without being told. The only thing that ever improves about these people are their skills at obfuscation tactics. And I don't even think anyone's thought about those advantages and consciously planned or anything, it's just the outcome of a new meme replacing the old one. I'm early into the discussion, but so far it's great! ...As much as I wish we didn't have to have it.

I've kept enough details of that fucking campaign in my head to always notice when this part is missing in a recounting. And on one hand it's understandable because it was all so convoluted, self-contradictory and ever-shifting that the best intentioned people can miss this part if they haven't also kept it all in their heads, which at the same time I really don't wish upon anyone. But it is also such an important element, since it reveals how the very core of it was built on fabrication, that I tend to share your frustration. You're doing good!

2024-03-21 15:18:09 +0000 UTCNot to be that guy (but i’m a gamedev and published a book about GG so I feel obliged) but I think it’s important to make it clear to your audience that Zoe was accused of getting a favorable review from Grayson but that review never actually existed. I get that you’re on the right side of this so no hard feelings but we don’t wanna repeat the baseless shit the gaters hoped would catch on to help spin their narrative. Gamergate was outsourced domestic violence, where a jilted lover decided to set a mob on his ex, and a bunch of interested parties jumped in to take advantage of the momentum. (And those interested parties then went on to take this model and use it elsewhere) (sorry sorry sorry! I won’t be that guy for anything else!)
