Light Gun Action: NY Captor

Last minute compilation problems made this JTFRIDAY a Saturday, apologies about that. And here we are!

This might be the last game for the JTFLSTORY core: NY Captor. A shooting game from Taito that precedes Operation Wolf. This game is not part of the MAME's driver for FairyLand Story, so I had not originally thought of it. But, while working on the PCB board for FairyLand, I noticed that some of the circuits only made sense if a light gun was connected to the system. The MAME driver did not show any such games so I looked around and found this other TAITO title.

NY Captor shows some of the elements that will later be present on Operation Wolf. The uniform of the bad guys, the innocent by passers, the grenades thrown at you that you can shoot away... In contrast, only stage three has scroll though, and it is vertical, as the hardware cannot make horizontal scroll.

Comparing NY Captor requirements with FairyLand's PCB got to more surprises. There are a lot of empty circuit sockets on the board for adding one more CPU to the system (making it a whopping 3xZ80 + MCU board). Checking MAME's information for NY Captor showed almost a perfect match with The FairyLand board. It still took a few days to make it work, though. As the core was originally made without the extra CPU and we had to implement light gun support on JTFRAME.

I have fed a bit of the hardware findings to the MAME team and we have corrected the small error on the sound pitch found on MAME. But still, compared to MAME's current version, the core shows correct sprite over background priority. Something that you can see straight away when you start the game on MAME and watch the attract mode. The MAME driver should get eventually corrected based on the information we have unveiled during our research.

This is the first light gun game to become a JT core. There are a few more in the queue, so adding support to this input system is an important project milestone. This week's support is still preliminary and only mouse based. But we are working on the [Sinden lightguns](https://sindenlightgun.com/) for the next core update.

Very excited to see arcade lightgun cores :) Is it possible to add generic usb lightgun/IR tracker support, such as the NES/PSX cores etc use? In NY Captor I can controll the crosshair using a guncon 3, however the directions are reversed and the movement isnt propotional to the gun.
