Here’s a peak on how I go on designing characters. Gonna add notes in this one like my earlier sketch notes!
Anyway some context on this post, me and some friends did an art jam the past few weeks and we were to workshop “Dateable Philippine Mythological Creatures as College Students”. I ended up getting Aswang which is the most basic and common of the creatures. For context, the aswang is a shapeshifter that and is basically a big umbrella term for a lot of creatures. For the most part, they’re filipino vampires!
I had this idea of the character being the popular girl but only because she uses her shapeshifting ability to hide her true form. The initial concept phase was getting the idea out but after which i wasn’t really happy with how the concept design turned out.
I experimented with shapes and I seemed to like adding spikes akin to the wings of a bat! It was a bit troubling figuring out the body as I didn’t want to fall into the “hourglass type”. I still need to figure that out still, actually. I also spent a good chunk figuring out her facial proportions.
All in all, designing this character was a bit of a struggle but I’m happy there were design choices here that I liked! I should do this more when I critique my own process. Thank goodness I saved the sketches hahahah
