[#193] ON JINNEMA, Part Two: "Djinn", "Munafik", and "Munafik 2"

Dimitri and Khalid continue their screening of jinn movies from around the world, including: the troubled production of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" auteur Tobe Hooper's last film, the UAE-financed "Djinn" (2013); the smash Malaysian blockbuster "Munafik" (2016), and its wildly escalatory Netflix-produced sequel "Munafik 2" (2018).

Late night with the devil was fun.

1. You were wondering about the roots of the j-horror crawl, and my personal hot take is that it can be traced back to the M.R. James short story titled "The Mezzotint," which hints at some key ideas that would emerge in modern classics like Ringu. James' influence on the evolution of horror in the 20th/21st centuries is kind of underrated, IMO. 2. Regarding parallels between jinn and fairy lore, if you haven't seen the Welsh horror movie The Feast from 2021, I highly recommend it. It touches on ecology, capitalism, etc. Cool stuff! Actually not bad- I lost interest once it met modern times

Flipped on Amazon and what do I see in the recs but a Tilda Swinton/Edris Elba vehicle about Djinn

I dragged my sister to the drive in at like 2 am a couple weeks ago to try and see the first omen and for some satanic reason the movie wasn’t playing (I still haven’t seen it, incidentally) SO we tried to watch late night with the devil but it was unwatchable. Totally derivative, feels ai generated, etc.
