[#192] ON JINNEMA, Part One: "The Talisman" and "Wishmaster"

Dimitri and Khalid embark on a global two-part survey exploring cinematic portrayals of Jinn (or djinn, or “genies”) from the 1980s to the present. First up: “The Talisman” (aka “The Curse”), a 1987 Egyptian cult horror classic where the dual shaytanic influences of capitalism and western pop culture bedevil a financially struggling Cairo family; and “Wishmaster”, the 1997 Wes Craven-produced gorefest where an evil Jinn from ancient Persia uses clever wordplay to murder half of Los Angeles.

1. Ace episode. Sicilians and southern Italians also have the evil eye in their culture. There was an old woman in my neighborhood who gave the evil eye to any kids who cut through her yard to get to the next block. 2. I'm sure you've fielded this question numerous times, but what is the best English translation of the Quran? Is the Clear Quran any good? Thanks!

Loved this episode. Regarding your conversation at the end about the lack of critique in the text of certain horror movies, I think this is where good criticism that does more than just say "thumbs up/down!" becomes an art form. Criticism that reframes and interprets a movie within a given context ultimately transforms it into something else, and that's valuable. Criticism as alchemical ritual, to get sus/spooky with it.

Living in America is a strange song for James brown. Whatever he was trying to throw down, love bizarre picked it up and polished it a little to give us what we need.

The Heyoka is a common recurring theme in my show, but I’ve never really dedicated a comprehensive segment to it. Djinn and Heyoka’s are real btw. This is great

I took basically the exact same horror movie class that Dimitri was talking about during my undergrad at UC Santa Cruz and it was taught by a professor who owned the coffee shop in East Palo Alto back in the 60s that gave Jerry Garcia his first ever gig and was connected with the Grateful Dead over the years, deeply sus.

Random proust connection with Balbec. Also, I was thinking it was random that the man who lit himself on fire (max azzarello) had a name that sounded like bulgakov’s azazello - based on azazel - this name has been associated with a desert demon of sorts.

Apotropaic vs. prophylactic- I’m going with the former in this context

Jinnema is a good portmanteau
