[#181] GROTTO OF TRUTH Q&A XXVI, Part Two

Dimitri and Khalid continue answering questions from the Grotto of Truth Discord about: satanic black metal (cont’d), the co-optation of radical energy by sus “progressive” NGOs and heckin’ “socialist” electoralism, the ominous fan death of Thomas Merton, and a citation check on our boy Old Chomsky’s research projects for the Pentagon.

I am absolutely begging people who don't like metal to refrain from the stupid screaming impression and galaxy brain explaining why it's *actually* dumb art, it just feels so fucking youth pastor at this point. I completely understand that you can detail how it's logically bad or whatever to like it and after hearing the same arguments for 20+ years I still just don't give a shit.

Omg u guys I was leaving my friend’s place the other day and this random dude complimented my outfit, saying, “nice fit. It is very CRADLE OF FILTH,” I just said you know thank you, kind of thing, not knowing who this group was. Pretty shocked to discover the images and that my presence would evoke a comparison in any sense, but excited to share the anecdote in sj comments nonetheless.

I like MAKC. Dude seems to go into many issues that aren’t being dealt with in any real way.

Katherine Moss

on the non profit counterinsurgency shit this recent interview with Hiram Rivera goes into a lot of that really comprehensively https://www.youtube.com/live/e0Cdt_1cW94?si=BGySkokpD8PMPUqf

Imperial Triumphant as well. . .

Dimitri’s comment at the start episode requires me to mention Ashenspire - they’re a great black metal in the same sonic vein as DSO but thematically focus on anti-fascism and industrial decay and entirely avoids any woo-woo satanic nonsense

This is the most condescending khaled has ever sounded

James Cascao

Yes please

Ashay Guevara

Preemptively commenting to piggy back of the prior ep’s comment about all shall perish being deathcore - ASP are definitely not black metal but I shove them under the umbrella of melodic death metal even if that category is also shared by lots of Swedish medal bands. Idk I never got into stuffing everything into a core subgenre. The only heavy music I can see deserving a “core” is metalcore (five finger deathpunch, I guess? I’m not big on what’s current). Anyways whatever you guys stuffed in the outro to the last ep just sounded like generic black metal (uh oh here comes the haters). It had a higher quality version of the Swedish chainsaw sound.
