[#165] SEKRET MACHINE MUSIC, Part One: Theosophy, Fascism, and Luigi Russolo’s Art of Noise

Dimitri and Khalid embark on a new multi-episode series investigating the origins of synthesizers, electronic music, and rave culture from the early 20th century to today.

PART ONE: Theosophy, Fascism, and Luigi Russolo’s Art of Noise

Some preliminary thoughts on the spiritual, social, and psychological significance of music, the immense occult power of sus radio and audio recording technology, Theosophy’s obsession with vibes, synesthesia, and trains, Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo, historians obscuring his lifelong interest in Theosophy, art schools minimizing his love of Italian fascism, The Art of Noise manifesto, his “intonarumori” acoustic noise instrument, and Rumi’s warning that a fist pumped in genuine ecstasy will guarantee you Paradise, but a fist pumped in false ecstasy will send you to hell in a bucket.

This series might be my favorite of yours, here listening again 👂

This was rad! Not sure if anyone else has brought this up, but are you guys gonna cover William S Burroughs The Electronic Revolution? Touches on occultism, divination, cut up, and weapon used sound and images. I recall it being pretty influential on the early industrial music scene in the UK.

Super awesome trajectory on this and a great ep to get going on this essential extension of 'hidden social engineering' ontological blind spots research. I just finished reading an extended interview book with Walter "THX 1138/Godfather/Apocalypse Now" Murch and his inspirado as a kid was musique concrete so eventually the stream pours directly into the sea of hyperedits and 'homo cinematicus' media/mediated jumpcut anthropology via all that ushered in and how and what it engendered, too. I leave to everyone else to question whether he himself is sus but the fact that George Lucas apparently was a photographer at Altamont and is supposed to be the same person who not only 'wrote THX 1138' and also then wrote "The Star Wars" and then somehow managed to sell off the bajillion dollar cash cow franchise to Disney.... mnyeah. Wheels within Zoetrope wheels, possibly. Anyway, I devoured this episode and the manifesto readalong! I want to dig up Edisonic Necrophone patents. Let's hear some etheric chatter out there! I'm a noise musician amongst others things so very interested on where this goes, as you continue this series through the decades here are a few things you might be interested in: 1. The BBC Radiophonic workshop, state sponsored development in electronic music essentially. (Ziwzih Ziwzih OO-OO-OO by Delia Derbyshire is a legit banger) 2. Raves as the development of sound-lightshows at venues like the UFO Club (Barrett-era Pink Floyd, who had synesthesia etc) which got a lot of media coverage at the time. They ultimately formed the aesthetic of the psychedelic scene. Drugs, flashing lights, crazy sounds: club culture. 3. Unrelated to the previous two - Jean-Michael Jarre, a French musician who has had very few hits but has a really weird concert history - the first Western musician invited to play in the PRC, invited to play NASA's 25th birthday and Moscow's 850th birthday. He has no tangible connection to any of these things. "Hören mit Schmerzen!" PS. Agreed Zappa sucks and is sus as hell

Everyone should watch Berberian Sound Studio - a British sound engineer who goes insane while working on a giallo film in Italy. This episode reminded me of it. Very SJ coded and a spiritual bookend to Phantom of The Paradise.

Finally, SJ’s avant-teen turn

Exited to hear where this goes. I’m hopeful this will lead to some history/analysis of sound system culture

I went to the dso premier two weeks ago I think it was and it is very cool to see the way people who play string instruments move their faces- their faces dance. Maybe it was boring if it was the only form of live music besides opera which I guess wasn’t serious like a symphony. But I never like when an art form - like for example dada or the situationists - being so ignorant and raging against their predecessors. I guess that’s because I’m a historian - or maybe that’s why I’m an historian- either way it’s ignorant and it’s a pose I can’t get behind. I like the sound of trains - if I’m going to listen to noise at night I listen to train in the rain - it’s like 10 hours of what it would sound like to be on a train in a storm. I’ve never been on a train to sleep but for some reason it is really appealing to me. Randomliii

I like noise music and symphony - shout out to all of it. I have misophonia - anyone else? This is related to diff noises for diff people but like for me it is chewing noises and kissing noises kind of- licking and kissing. Not really sucking luckily.

ampgorky

Ep was an anti semite for sure

Giorgio Moroder waited in the cut for Patrick Cowley to die to take credit for the dance music sound of the 80s. I’m sad that Khalid doesn’t like good music and doesn’t like to dance but he taught me something - I can really f with a person who likes Taylor swift. I mean that was transformative. Lols

ampgorky

Whew! Juan Atkins is also not being judged but still

ampgorky

Ham radio is cool if only for the qsl cards - I have a huge collection and I could go thru them for hours on end

ampgorky

Especially the breakdown

Thought of this when they were talking about war https://youtu.be/IunnJdDTY-w?si=Bzy9bghabN9uio2Y

Sus radio yes! I’m very into this topic - well especially like for example radio free Europe and samizdat stuff

ampgorky

Woah that sounded Cool that opera thing

ampgorky

Synthesizers are not being judged

ampgorky

Ya D has a pretty good ear for sure. I don’t like frank zappa either.

*Moog intensifies*

When I shared sj with one of my gen x Detroit techno friends he said that Khalid sounded like a raver, lol. I didn’t really agree but he pretty much only knows ravers so I don’t know. Either way im going to shut up and try not to comment every one second cause this - along with aids and like Stalin - is kind of one of my topixxx and I’m going to be annoying

ampgorky

Knew this was gunna be an ep one day.

Scott Crimmins

Nice!
