Lol missed the update lol I love it honestly same

2:52 Ashley Johnson was super busy at the time, she had to move from LA to NYC so she could regularly star in a multi-season tv series called Blindspot. At the same time, she was also shooting for The Last of Us Part 2 as she stars as the main character (Ellie) in the games. She was finally able to become a regular halfway through Critical Role’s second campaign once she wrapped for both productions. She also was fully present for all of Campaign 3. They actually threw a cute little ‘Welcome Back Ashley’ celebration during the intro of her first game back full-time and it’s super adorable and sweet to watch.

VVenture

Agreed. Bummed that they ignored it. 😕

I'm surprised there wasn't more discussion about Pike's religious epiphany. "Any path you walk can be a holy one, if you walk it with truth" is some pretty good advice from your God to be honest.

The term Silver Tongued Devil was what I always heard through zeitgeist and whatnot. So I love how Anders personified that idiom

dannydarko27

Morbid detail, but I like how rough and quiet Cassandra sounds in her conversation with her brother, after her throat was healed by Keyleth.

HBelmont 24

That being said, I do love how quickly he dropped the mask and pepper box to check on Cassandra. Kinda emblematic of his remaining goodness.

HBelmont 24

"You're the face I saw when murder entered my heart." Another badass line by No Mercy Percy. Taliesin is the GOAT

Taizen

I was wondering whether she was dead or in death saving throws haha

Kenny, you can't take "Player" Death and Damage to NPC's persay, Players can usually get up with a simple Heal mainly because it would be really lame to have your Character Die once at Zero. Per the DM's Story need, an NPC could die that easily. Of course in this case it worked but just saying, keep in mind the differences of Player Characters and NPC's

This is one of my favorite episodes of this season and I feel that season 1 turns a corner here and becomes top-tier from here on out, as opposed to just being excellent. Among other things, I loved this depiction of Pike's goddess, Sarenrae the Everlight. Also want to point out that Silas is the epitome of trophy husband. It's an observation someone else once made, and it's stuck with me.

I said this before and I'll say it again I love that this is out on Mondays! I get to watch a show about dnd and hear about your dnd game on my way home to then get ready to stream my own dnd campaign XD ive been playing dnd on Mondays for YEARS so it just feels so right to me haha I do believe it was stated but a lot of the dnd stuff is changed to fit a more narrative or story beat better than it would have been in a 6 second combat haha especially with Keyleths healing, they wanted to show the difference between how different casters do similar things! Though Matt does have a resurrection ritual for revival spells so its not just instant: either its a spell check or its like a full on 3 people have to bring something to the ritual and its a skill challenge and for each success/fail it changes the DC and the matt will roll to see if it works and they are back! Its honestly a GREAT rule that I use in my games!

Pike's story here gets to combine two parts of the original game in a cool way. Obviously the first is her being kept away for a long stretch of time due to Ashley filming Blindspot, the main excuse at this time was that she was helping to restore a temple to her goddess in a faraway city. It's also a reference to the first adventure of the streamed game (not shown in the animation) where they travel into the Underdark. There is an incident where Pike/Ashley gets a little overexcited by the mood and just straight up executes someone they took prisoner, which Matt called her out for as having damaged her connection to the more mercy/life focused goddess Pike is a cleric of (basically it was an 'evil' by a 'good' character). I don't remember much of what, if anything, came of it beside that it happened, so this I think wrapped the whole "Pike is losing her way" angle with the "Ashley can't play for a while" event.

Been mentioned here already, but Matt doesn’t let any life saving spells work for free. He makes the players go through a “ritual” to bring characters back and it is decided by a series of rolls. Death in Matt’s campaigns can’t just be handwaved, it’s a real threat.

You're clearly just trying to be helpful rather than a know-it-all or whatever, so I think your clarification is just helpful. In my experience the stats of all NPCs are up to the DM ultimately. By default most NPCs are assumed to have the commoner statblock or something generic that has like a super low CR and thus low HP total etc. For me as a DM/GM all my NPCs serve different purposes, and their "stats" can vary based on that. Average ppl are 'commoners' but an elite guard or commander etc may get a higher CR set of stats etc to communicate that or prevent them from instantly dying if they get pulled into combat. Some NPCs "can't" die unless they players absolutely want them to (usually because their death would ruin the story completely or require too much rewriting etc). On the other hand I've had villains who functionally are weak/ordinary ppl, and so all their 'power' is more narrative or social in a sense rather than in their inmate ability or stats. Really it all depends on your GM and how they choose to handle NPCs in their games at a given moment basically.

Drake

they took a lot of freedoms, but they also stayed pretty close to how things went down with a lot of things, so I don't think it's necessarily bad to try to imagine the D&D situation that lead to the scene in the show

cryptc

Scanlan's, "you got Scanlanned" rap just sounded like Sam riffing. 🎶 😂

HBelmont 24

Also, another reaction channel, The Normies, called Anders "male Ursula," and now I can't unsee it. 🤣🤣

HBelmont 24

Dang you guys summoned sheriff cat in the first few seconds with the ancient ritual

Braden Jackson

Stephen Root did a GREAT job voicing Anders and making him so hateable. He also voiced Dr. Brandyworth from the Atom Eve special in Invincible, as well as Gideon's dad in Gravity Falls.

HBelmont 24

yeah it seems like Cass was dead already and the spell is probably meant to represent revivify not just a simple heal.

David Bodor

matt mercer has his own rules for bringing someone back to life that involves a whole ritual with multiple rolls involved so that could be what they are trying to portray here

erykahlc

Yayy looked forward to this :)

wanira 11

The jumpscare of Cassandra's revival gets me every time. 😂😂

HBelmont 24

27:47 - She used a bunch of residium, which is a magic amplifier, though in terms of player mechanics it just replaces magical components. So you can use up a bit of residium instead of other stuff for spells, like instead of diamonds when bringing someone back to life, you could just use the equivalent value of residium.

David Bodor

Not sure what to make of that intro. 🤣🤣

HBelmont 24

Also kinda related tk my last comment and again hope this isnt coming off as annoying "well actually" but the show is an adaption. They're not trying to put the rules in the game 1 to 1..the magic system of the show is slightly different in order to make story telling decisions. The scene with healing Cassandra is perfect example. Yes a druid can just use a 1 action spell to fix anyone on the brink of death. But thats lame tk always show it and they wanted tk show a difference between a druid healing and a cleric healing. And up the drama. Again love your reactions. I just think a lot of reactors all try to analyze the dnd stuff to the point where some of the story writing decisions where good stuff is is lost or glossed over. Also might just be rambling good reactions overall.

Suplee215

Not a critique but one thing with dnd is everyone plays it their own ways with their own rules. From what you are saying it feels like you have a very specific dm who treats every npc by the same rules as player characters. Which isn't always the case. Npc stay blocks that are like monster stat blocks exist and wre user often. The death saving rules is only for player characters. Not npcs or enemies. Totally not saying "your fun is wrong" just pointing out info. Its easy im your first dnd campaign to assume the table you're playing does egerything the way it is and part of the fun is every table is different.

Suplee215

It's Machina Monday! Woo! I love the fight in this episode, so good.
