2025-05-07 19:18:32 +0000 UTCThis series is called a "seinen". Its basically meant to be mature and a story for adults and not any kind of kiddish stuff. Shonen is meant for teenage boys and young men. This is a show that is meant to have actual uncensored killing in it and doesn't hold back just like any other seinen. Berserk is a seinen and vinland saga is so good that it tends to be held next to berserk along with a series called vagabond. They are the 3 big seinen.

Narratively, I think it might have one of the best opening stretches of episodes for any first season of anime, at least for the time it was made (2019). I think episodes 1-6 are literally near perfect, with almost every single scene having some important or necessary story building, which I’m guessing may just be the result of this not being a Shonen. 🤣

2025-05-07 15:02:18 +0000 UTCRegarding the scene with the spear in the opening… Floki had a guard in case negotiations went sour and after Askelaad essentially demands twice the proposed bounty, it’s implied Floki intended to have this guard attack Askelaad. However, Bjorn is watching, notices this demeanor change and kills the guard first, under the guise of an unintentional throw. The scene is meant to show how tight knit and capable the pirates are, given their willingness to threaten and make demands of the Jomsvikings (one of if not the strongest fighting forces of the time in the story)
