I like how Kenny brought up that Bible story at the end, I’m not sure if this is what you were thinking of there’s probably a few stories like this, but anyways how it goes is there are two men praying next to each other at the temple and one man is much more extravagant than the other and he says “ dear God I just wanted to thank you for all of my power and all of my wealth and that you have blessed me so much” he is announcing his prayer saying how perfect he is while the other man says it quietly and the second man is a tax collector, considered one of the lowest of the low in that society and he says “dear Lord, I do not deserve your love, and I am a sinner. I am rotten Why would you possibly love someone like me?” One man is far more humble than the other, it’s a tail as old as time

2025-04-03 03:06:22 +0000 UTCFor the theological stuff i think an important question is "is it important that what you believe is true". The monk's reason he believes has nothing to do with whether it is true or not. Which if that works for someone then ok. But ut does always feel weird to see that without any questioning. I do think the set up in this world woth how priests and a holy city and stuff are set up with a singular goddess that a western lens isn't too far off. It seems like the setting is based on western fantasy stuff which usually includes an analog to the catholic church to a loose extent.

2025-03-20 14:04:38 +0000 UTCI forgot to mention, Kraft means Power - He's a powerful hero from the past, and Granat means Garnet, likely a reference to the red necklace that his family wears.

2025-02-09 16:54:52 +0000 UTCI think about Kraft and the way this series uses the word "praise" it's more in the sense of knowing that the life you've led has been to do good, not in the sense of I need the recognition from the Goddess, because priests and people use it also when trying to convey that the person has done some good. "When I die I'll praise you with the Goddess" I think it is more like tradition in this world system, even if you don't believe in the Goddess I'll still tell her of all the good you've done because I care about you and your soul in the afterlife. So Kraft is the same, he now has nobody alive that remembers the good impact he's had over the world so he hopes than when he dies that "praise" will come from the Goddess, that his life had meaning, that's my interpretation of what he's hoping and why he believes, and it's only a little selfish, but everyone wishes to be told they've done good with their life.

2025-02-01 11:42:50 +0000 UTCAlso why would you assume Kraft doesn’t care about the people around him just because he also wants to see the goddess when he dies? That’s a really weird and definetly kinda judgmental thing to think
Mortis
2025-02-01 03:45:45 +0000 UTCKraft isn’t saying everyone needs to worship him and constantly tell him how awesome he is. He’s saying that he needs the goddess to exist because if she doesn’t everything he’s ever done and everyone he’s ever known and loved is truly gone forever like it never happened or mattered. Let’s say you wake up tomorrow and everyone you ever knew was either gone or didn’t remember you. No parents no spouse no friends no loved ones everything you spent your life doing and building just isn’t there now. That’s krafts life. Everything he’s ever done is lost to time. Like he never did anything. Like he never existed at all. He needs the goddess to exist because she will remember him. She will know he existed and mattered and what he did. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with wanting that

2025-02-01 01:01:23 +0000 UTCI may just be sensitive to it, because I grew up in an environment where religion was omnipresent but deeply hypocritical. Seeing positive representations matter so much to me, because we are in times where people are abusing the labels of faith to completely defy the deeper meaning.
Hawk
2025-01-31 22:12:20 +0000 UTCI kind of understand where they are coming from. In more western religions, specifically Christianity, your reason for believing/following just being that you want to be remembered and validated, would stick out as less of a "Selfless" motivation. That being said, I'm not religious, and seeing one of the other comments saying its similar to getting emotional needs from a loved ones does make sense to me.
Desynth
2025-01-31 22:10:46 +0000 UTCI tHINK she might be approaching it as an "argument" in a debate for if religion is true or not, as shown by her being like "I want praise therefore religion is true", which wasn't wat the show was really going for; Frieren asked why he believed, and that's the reason. Kraft wants it to be true. He even acknowledges it's just something he wants, regardless of its validity. Honestly, that's really the core motivator behind MOST people's religious belief, whether they admit it to themselves or not

2025-01-31 21:44:29 +0000 UTCYeah, what i like like most about this shows approach to religion is that it doesn't even really bother with trying to make a GOOD argument for or against the TRUTH of it; it's far more interested in WHY people believe, which is kinda refreshing. Normally stories only look into that to be like "THEY believe cuz THEY want to justify xyz" or "WE believe cuz WE'RE RIGHT!", whereas this takes a more... i don't wanna use the term "good faith" approach, but maybe less cynical/biased respectively
CH
2025-01-31 21:43:52 +0000 UTCKraft's belief being driven by the desire to be remembered and praised is very much the same as Himmels Eizens and Heiters "it's more convenient that way" attitude about heaven existing. It's more convenient for him to believe that he will be remembered and praised for his deeds rather than forgotten, much like it's more convenient to the others to believe that there's a heaven rather than simply returning to dust I hope kraft comes back in season 2

2025-01-31 18:51:25 +0000 UTCMontana’s perspective on Kraft’s faith and his desires just felt so strange. To me, it simply boils down to the fact that he’s been around and done so much but there’s no one around him anymore who remembers any of it, and more importantly, him. He believes in the goddess as this eternal figure in the hopes that once he passes on, she’ll provide him with the gratification he desires. I also felt like she sees selfish affirmation as a negative. emotion/motivator, this thing that needs to be grown out of, which I found strange. People enjoy praise from people they care about. I feel like it’s a simple concept they sort of overthought to death. Just my take though.

2025-01-31 18:16:14 +0000 UTCI was thinking less "we have to procreate and maintain elves" and more like "There are very few living beings who share my experiences as a long lived creature and my culture." A lot of people have trouble sharing her experiences, for example a time before humans could use magic or just elven foods or songs etc. Like "Oh man, Kraft, do you remember that novel that was super popular 800 years ago?" or "Gosh, i remember having to read everything on scrolls, so glad that boks have been invented" or "It'd only been a hundred years but they're changing currency AGAIN! I still have coins from 500 yearsa go, that are worthless now." Or something elf specific "My ears lately have been weird bc blah blah blah" "No worries, Frieren, that is normal during elf puberty/menopause and will stop on its own in a hundred years".
Limini
2025-01-31 18:13:11 +0000 UTCI felt like the view of Kraft's faith was a /super/ weird take... I believe the implication is that he's already a decent man whose done great things. He should be a part of history, like Himmel or Frieren, and was... And then that entire world, that entire context, was buried under the endless snows of time. How does someone DEAL with that? On some level, we can live in the now, but... Imagine a world that had never heard of Caesar... And you WERE Caesar. Wild. As mentioned in other comments, the Goddess became his constant star so that he could /keep/ his compassion. A sort of spiritual home and family, a reminding that it all matters and that someone WILL remember that it all mattered. That's huge, I think.
Hawk
2025-01-31 18:06:31 +0000 UTCJust saying, if it really mattered to them they’d do something about it, romantic feelings or not. My guess is living so long makes them kind of meh to the idea of continuing the species when they’ll already live for many centuries, especially when they see how much humans are able to progress in such a short amount of time. And considering all of that, the urgency of getting to know each other simply isn’t there.
Chelly
2025-01-31 18:00:00 +0000 UTCI read in an article "When an infant chimpanzee dies, his or her mother will carry the lifeless body around for days. Sometimes for weeks or months. The mother continues to groom the body, slowing the inevitable decay. She only stops interacting with the corpse when it has decomposed so much that it is no longer recognizable."
Limini
2025-01-31 17:55:53 +0000 UTCA lot of religion is based on getting into heaven or being rewardd for being "good". The belief that good should be rewarded and recognized and that it will prevail all evil is a common hope, and if it doesnt happen during life it happens in the afterlife. I love that Frierens world building is subtle enough and builds with each episode but ep like this make me crave pure exposition episodes where i get to know about religion (are there more than one? Dwarfs are appearantly not that religious bc they are more traditional, so religion is relative modern? modern in human years? in dwarf years? in elf years?) Praise seems to be a big part of the faith seeing Heiter and Kraft and Fern. But is it part of the faith or is it just them? Fern has her religious education from Heiter so of course they believe similar things. Kraft probably ahs been faithful for a long time? (or maybe he just converted recently?) How has the way the goddess is worshipped changed? Does Kraft practice faith like they did a thousand years ago or does he follow current practices? ?????? Many questions and so many implied answers

2025-01-31 17:43:23 +0000 UTCWhen Kraft said none of his deeds are praised or remembered anymore, i immeadiatly had to think of Frieren in a thousand years being so lonely bc no one would remember Himmel or Fern, etc. Believing that she's not the only one to remember would be so comforting i think. In EP7 when they talked about how Flamme has turned into a fairy tale, a myth, that already broke my heart. Having the goddess share your memories is kind of a nice cope
Limini
2025-01-31 17:41:17 +0000 UTCOther representations also show her as an elf, like the colored glass (I think it was glass?) piece from the first episode at the king's palace. Also the statue on the decrepit church on episode 2, when Frieren creates the field of flowers in the flashback with the hero's party.
ATableWithPants
2025-01-31 17:40:43 +0000 UTCI thought Kraft would be doing good deeds either way but he is faithful bc he wants them aknowleged or remembered so he feels less lonely. I currently have only few friends who remember me from my childhood and it is different being friends with them and making new friends who only know the current you. Like the changes and phases i went through are just nonexistent to them. I personally would also love to have a person know me from beginning to end. I saw a lot of TikToks too where it is like "going from planning a future together to talking stage". Where when you lose someone in your life that you have known for years and had a deep understanding of and planned a future together to having to go on dates where you have to do small talk or basic questions bc you're strangers. It feels kind of empty and I can't imagine to go through that over and over again. Spending Lifetimes getting to know a person, just to start all over again and having to build trust and love again and again from zero. For an elf the world must be everchanging and having the goddess as a constant and secure entity would be very comforting i think.
Limini
2025-01-31 17:37:16 +0000 UTCI wish we could have learned more about elves and Kraft. It was so frustrating to see him saying goodbye at the end of the episode. When the bit with the "and before that?" "I suppose, I'm saying we're elves" made me go crazy. Like yeah they both have lived over a millenia and of course frieren had a life before she was a mage of the hero party and Kraft too has been someone before and after his accomplishments. There lives are so vast. An elf could be a renown chef with the most popular restaurant and before that have been someone who fought wars etc but bc humans have such short lifespans it is kind of unthinkable when someone looks so young they ould have lived twelve lifes. Like do Fern and Stark ever ask her about her time before she joined the heros party? I'm so curious as what Kraft has done in his lifetime, to ask like that. And it's just crazy how casual they are with elfs going extinct. I woulf have expected for them to cling a bit more to each other or exchange some kind of contact info.

2025-01-31 16:04:48 +0000 UTCbefore frieren joined the hero’s party she didn’t realize she had those needs and didn’t value them as much as she should have when she had people around her to fulfill them. now she’s trying harder to connect with people and cherish them, but it still begs the question, after those people have come and gone and perhaps many more in the future, will she need something greater to rely on for comfort? I think that’s where the other elf being older comes into play. he’s experienced these feelings of loss many more times than her and has his own coping mechanism.
Addy
2025-01-31 15:59:34 +0000 UTCI saw the monk’s need for praise from the goddess as fulfilling this emotional need you get from your loved ones throughout your life. you want people around you to love you, recognize you, celebrate you. As an elf where these relationships are very fleeting compared to his lifespan, the goddess serves a constant for him to rely on regardless of who has come and gone.

2025-01-31 15:47:56 +0000 UTCI think Kraft very much appreciated his time with the party. He trained Stark, made Fern a necklace, spoke about life with Frieren, I think he made a strong impression on all 3 of them. If his goal is to be remembered, he did well. As for it being a selfish desire to get praise, he probably lost all his friends, acquaintances and anyone who knew of him many times over, being older than Frieren, I can't imagine how anyone would cope mentally with that in a healthy manner. Finding the godess may be the best he has.
