2025-01-27 11:27:44 +0000 UTCI am watching this show for the first time alongside you guys so I don't know what happens in future episodes, but kenny your analysis at the end of the episode about time going slower for david was insane, like what insane observations. I never would of thought of that but it makes so much sense.

2024-11-01 02:40:39 +0000 UTCMike Pondsmith, author of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG that the video game is based on, made a reddit comment a couple years ago about cyberpsychosis, mentioning that he modeled it on steroid abuse and "roid rage". Also, the tabletop RPG has a Humanity stat that's an abstraction of a character's compassion, moral principles, available emotional support, etc., which help anchor a person's sense of self and perception of reality. A big part of it is ultimately "what happens when someone with unaddressed mental health issues and powerful weapons is worn down to their breaking point". The mind does strange things when it's running out of options.

2024-10-30 21:20:54 +0000 UTCThose shots Maine keeps taking are suppressants. They are meant to help prevent cyberpsychosis, or in the most severe cases, push back the symptoms for a moment. It's what David got after his first day with the sandevistan.

2024-10-30 21:12:36 +0000 UTCI don’t really agree that Cyberpsychosis and substance abuse are a 1-1 allegory. The relatively common drive among Edgerunners to constantly improve their bodies and become more effective mercs is definitely portrayed as addiction in many cases, but just like in the real world, substance abuse is only one of many ways to arrive at serious mental health issues and psychosis. You wouldn’t really know it from the show, as they portray Cyberpsychosis very specifically with that thematic, glitchy, visual cue, but it’s actually caused by all sorts of things in combination with the heavy implants. Like a real psychological condition it has common co-morbidities, such as homelessness, lack of support structure, isolation, depression or anger issues due to recent loss, etc. In the game, a major side quest present in every act is taking down Cyberpsychos non-lethally so your fixer can send them in for experimental therapy. After you defeat each one, you generally need to do some minor detective work as to what caused the break. Inevitably, it is a malady of capitalism; insurance being denied leads to anti-psychotic medication running out, a realestate developer-led corporate pogrom against a homeless encampment leaves a single survivor who happens to be a heavily augmented veteran. Stuff like that. It’s gently implied that Cyberpsychotic episodes are just normal (albeit very severe) mental health issues amplified through the incredible power of combat implants, and the only reason they’ve become so common is the ludicrously oppressive conditions of a world ruled by mega-corporations. And for the mega-corporations, it’s far more convenient (and better consumer optics) to just shrug and say, ‘too much chrome I guess, definitely didn’t have anything to do with us denying coverage.”

2024-10-30 19:34:08 +0000 UTCGoing “light-spec,” for a Solo like Maine, would usually mean replacing combat implants with regular prosthesis meant to integrate more easily with the human nervous system. Maine’s got the big arms with the Projectile Launch System but we really don’t know what else, sub-dermal armor probably, maybe a second heart, muscle stabilizers, chrome compressor etc. He’s probably got a lot more going on under the hood than we know, those implants are usually the more dangerous ones too in terms of courting cyber psychosis, rather than just gorilla arms or personal weaponry like mantis blades or Lucy’s mono wire. A lot of those internal implants replace functioning organs so reducing your load could also mean buying expensive, vat-cloned organs and getting them surgically installed. So there’s a lot of negative implications from the perspective of a merc like Maine. It could wipe out his savings and make him unable to do his job. Obviously that’s a very short term outlook but life is fast and hard in Night City and plenty of people prefer to live that way over a long term that could be ended by a stray bullet in the street.

2024-10-30 15:03:25 +0000 UTCThis is an intense episode, but David putting the blanket on Lucy to cover her up after carrying her out of the deep dive was really cute. ☺️ Hey, gotta take what positive vibes you can outta this show from now on.

2024-10-30 14:33:58 +0000 UTCMake sure you also check the music video for "let you down". It's the ending theme, but the same studio did an animated short to go with it which is essentially a prequel to the series.
