Enjoy! Next ep next Sunday or Tuesday!

TLA Live Action 1x1 Reaction

Comments

Yeah, Gyatso wouldn't have done the vacuum technique in this continuity since he was protecting the children in the same room.

Kyle MacDonald

personally, the one thing that irks me the most is just how focused on responsibility and duty aang is which is completely reversed from cartoon aang and basically it flips his whole personality. that and katara being mollified are the two biggest flops for me. however, there are a lot of good additions that they made - pretty much all the things they added are cool. it's not a perfect show but honestly, i was bawling like a dumbass watching it because avatar man. so i will support and watch any show with avatar, they just need to step up they game a little

Cassandra Nightshade

man, you guys would really love the one piece adaptation

Cassandra Nightshade

In their attempt to make the show ‘less sexist’ they kinda made it more so, by stripping all of Katara’s Girlboss energy and making her so bland

DrawnJohn

OMG YAYA IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REACTION FOR SO LONGGG 😊

Seven

Not 1 tear came out aangs eyes😭

Bryan

I don’t think Aang is flying he’s just using air to keep himself up. Same how Korra would use water. Probably can only do it for a bit

Bryan

To me it read like he was using air bending to fall in specific ways, not flying.

christian

There’s a lot of rumors for why the creators left and another rumor is that the creators actually wanted to make more changes than Netflix wanted.

christian

I detest what they did to Katara. She is played so monotone and they took away most of her bossy personality that it doesnt even feel like the same character

delaney trent

Keep in mind they had to shorten this to only 8 episodes, so inherently it’s going to be different. I gotta agree with most that you kinda have to view it as its own thing. It’s different, but it’s good.

LowHorizon

Yeah, I suppose you're not wrong. Gotta try to remember this is a different take on the show, in general. Plus...It's quite the ask for anybody to truly match the original iroh regardless! Haha But seriously...wtf were they THINKING with gran gran? Like the dialogue, the delivery...it was just SO bad!!!

Jinchuriki87

hard disagree. (about Iroh anyways, spot on with GranGran) I think Iroh is a great take on the character in a grittier setting. Especially considering with what he has dealt with. Not saying more to avoid spoilers for the live action.

Fenixnade

womp womp

wilma

Exactly. I am now bound by social expectation to watch it because I'm low key addicted to these reactions. Yall are watching/have watched shows I otherwise would NOT have cared about. But enjoy so much mostly because of the community here. That's why I want STEVEN UNIVERSE so bad. I would LIVE for the discussion of the themes, both serious and fun. It's such a good watch. Maybe after ATLA 👀 (Only if big pharma restores Kenny's meds 🤣)

Æther Paradox

I agree, there are some things that this adaptation was able to do in a compelling way. As long as people realize that it doesn't need to be an exact remake of the original. Similar to the Last of Us series last year. I wish the art departments had more attention and love. The sets and wardrobe can be truly atrocious sometimes.

Alejandro Bonfil

Also, as others have said, I was at first very critical of him "flying" in the intro scene, but then did a rewatch of the original series, and realized that they actually did a really great job of making sure he looked more like slowing his fall and enhancing jumps then just flying. At no point does he do the full Zaheer hover in mid air while doing other bending - everything he does is about controlling the air currents around him.

Matthew Calo

As someone who has watched the entire new series, I will say the best thing you can do is not try and compare it 1-to-1. I found that, when considering it on its own merits, I actually really enjoyed the adaptation; the only times I struggled were when I was specifically looking at changes made and comparing it to the original. They rework certain stories and events in order to tell a more streamlined narrative that still captures the main themes, and I think this new take actually works better with regards to pacing and thematic development.

Matthew Calo

Another “red flag” like Montana said, that I agree with is Katara Water bending while 100 meters above the sea

JeffersonGE

Will you guys ever do more un-animated series? It could be very interesting seeing y’all react to that type of series

JeffersonGE

I honestly hate this take of the avatar series. With the bad dialogue and the removal of certain character traits and arcs it kills it for me also some of the additions feel random and some don’t make much sense. A lot of what made the animated series special is just removed or dumbed down.

Lord Boke

So I gotta say, I can see where this dropped some fans. The visuals are phenomenal, as well as the music. But some of the acting and dialogue (looking at you in particular gran gran 😑😑) was off putting. (Another let down was iroh, was almost like he was trying TOO hard to pull the vibe and it didn't hit well) Overall though, I am enjoying it (I'm glad I waited to watch it via y'all's reactions, because I think it helps me deal with the let downs as y'all observe them as well haha) and hopefully it gets better

Jinchuriki87

I literally waited to watch it through this reaction series because I was so iffy after hearing one of my best friends who's a huge AtLA fan told me it was "meh" And I can't say I disagree, but it wasn't as bad getting to "laugh along" with Kenny and Montana haha

Jinchuriki87

Moving forward. Remember that the Original Animated series by Nick targeted a younger audience especially kids when they released it. While on the other hand, Netflix probably want to introduce the Avatar universe to a wider range of audience, so probably there are changes that is totally different from the OG and scenes that are not sugar coated. Hope u enjoy the whole series. :) and oh, about Aang not using his glider and seems flying to get down to Gyatso,,, i think the reference for that is in the 2nd episode of OG series, remember the first time they met momo, Aang straight up jumped from a high cliff/mountain just to try and catch momo only to see the place where gyatso died. Airbenders can jumped from high places using airbending.

Frolan Ken Magdua

avatar was the first animated show that i ever watched and it resulted in the spiral down other cartoons and animes. This show means a lot to me and as a huge lover of the animated verson... I LOVE THIS LIVE ACTION. In a way, you need to separate the two, cause if you consistently compare them then it'll ruin it. I think all the actors did an amazing job and i can't wait to see how they improve throughout the seasons. Also avatar is what brought me to your channel back when you first reacted and i've been watching your reactions since then :)

KallMeLil

because its air its hard to see in a live action form, but if looked closely you can see the air movement under aang much like roku's air tunnel in the cartoon. also he is bobbing in calling appa, like he is controlling the air around him. lastly just to justify the floating. we can see air in the cartoon, but when zaheer flies, you don't see air moving him around, he is just flying. love you guys so glad to see you going back to your start with Avatar.

ScotyMitch

The first and last few episodes are the best. Pretty solid 💯 They are also the ones that the original writers were involved with!

Katsuki BakuGOAT

FLOATING ! not flying...

Jose Ulysses Rivera

No I actually really like that reaction I'm a new fan but I really like Their reactions

Ethan

That sounds more like an issue you have with people's reactions than with the show itself. (I agree, BTW. That's not flying.)

H-Bomb 24

I think they thing that I'm happy about the most is the fact that the show runners didn't force the brown eyed actors to wear weird blue eye contacts.

BlueEyedRaven

Wait you’re telling me I’ve been here from the beginning. I remember watching the tiktoks and now yall and MARRIED. and I’m a patron <3 <3 <3

Ksweets

That's one of my biggest issues with the show a lot of people think he's flying but he's literally falling with style He's always moving in a downward motion and using air to propel himself up zaheer Did not have to do that he was completely weightless

Ethan

They said in another comment up above that they already watched it in their own time.

Gestrid

Agreed, I think it was more "falling with style" than flying. As for the scene when he's trying to find Appa, it could be that he's pushing himself up off the ground using the air. If I recall correctly, Zaheer was just straight up floating and didn't need to actively keep himself from falling. He didn't need to bend air to keep him aloft.

Gestrid

Katara's lines after Aang finds out everything is so awkward..."are you okay?" Ma'am.... but also it makes sense because she's 16, no 16 year old knows how to comfort someone who just lost their entire culture and everyone they've ever known probably most adults don't either tbh

Caitlyn Jones

Just saw the first episode a couple days ago (been too busy playing a game called Persona 3 Reload to do anything else in my free time). I'm really enjoying it so far. My only complaints about the first episode is the weird cuts between scenes (such as when Zuko carried off Aang in one shot, and the next shot is Katara and Sokka looking at it in the distance; it feels like there's a transition scene missing between them) and that Iroh seems to be played more seriously than in the original. Those are my only complaints so far, though I've only seen the first episode. I will say that I like that Netflix still credited the original creators as writers on this show despite the fact that they very publicly left the show on less-than-favorable terms. Overall, I genuinely liked this first episode. 16:20 "He's not flying, he's falling with style!" 31:40 True, they really didn't sugar-coat anything here. They drew the line at the kids, though. That would've been too much, even for me.

Gestrid

I really wanted to like this show, and I do like parts of it a lot. But its mostly just the dialogue that really kills it for me.

The Lorax

I'm a very visual person so I hate it when CGI looks /too/ CGI for me haha I never watched the M.Night movie (started with some friends and never finished bc we took a shot every time the movie looked bad and stopped after 10 minutes lol) but I did like the fight scenes in this ep, everything else was just kindaaaa meh. Some of the clothing looked a bit like cheap cosplay-like material, some of the fighting loses a bit of its original crispness as I'm sure it's hard to stick to specific martial art movements (since the 4 elements are based after different martial arts specifically) buuuuut I think if someone was just watching the show and never saw the cartoon before, it was be an interesting watch!

Day

gotta agree with both of you, I don't think I'll ever watch it like on my own, but watching it like, with my fav analysis reaction peeps could be fun

Day

Now that you started this, would there be a possibility that you will also try watching the One Piece Live Action once you've finished this?

Roy Meulblok

This was my exact experience as well. I got to 4 and haven't really had a desire to watch more but with others it might be better.

The Lorax

Sorry for being off-topic, but would it be possible to do a double episode drop for MHA this week? Next two episodes are just too good to wait for.

Keyblade

I’ll take that explanation. Just as a visual aspect kinda irked me

Izrail Gevorgyan

I think the flying is more like slow or controlled falling. We see that Aang is much faster and more agile with his glider.

Keyblade

I had a hard time with this adaptation. Im so protective of ATLA because I was watching this when I was 12 (Aangs age) It premiered on Nick in 2005. I really was not okay with the changes that were made starting with episode one. It was info dump after info dump and I just felt the writing was bad. The actors did the best they could and I really really loved the casting choices. I hope you enjoy it. Your reaction videos of ATLA were what actually got me watching reaction videos in general lol I just couldn't get past those issues.

Julio Salazar

I think there's a lot to like about this show, personally. The fight scenes are amazing, the setpieces are gorgeous, and a lot of the way they restructured the story works super well (except in episode 1, they crammed waaaaay too much into episode 1). Everything with the Fire Nation is fantastic. Sokka, Zhao and Azula's actors understood the assignment perfectly, and the other actors do a really good job too. But *man* does it fall flat in a lot of other places. Like, it's *so close* to being a great show, but ends up falling into Meh for me.

Ferret

I also thought that Aang flying around was a bad choice… Zaheer was supposed to be the first air bender in I think like 1000 years who unlocked the power of flight.. so having Aang do it kinda throws that away. (Unless the do a LOKLA, and show it differently)

Izrail Gevorgyan

It was just like “we need to convey the whole plot motivation here”

Letts React

One other thing that I saw mentioned is that the entire live action series actually ran longer (or close to) than the animated show, yet the animated show was able to give so much more heart and draw into the world.

Gwendolyn Vrisala

I think the biggest complaint about ep.1 is definitely Gran-Gran's monologue.. my cousin and brother died laughing bc of how monotone it sounded

Izrail Gevorgyan

I really wish I liked this adaptation. But the dialogue and editing of the show takes me out of it so much that it's infuriating... There are some changes I liked, and some I didn't. But, I don't mind them. It's really just the dialogue and editing that get me. The amount of exposition and telling instead of showing is painful. Always like both of your reactions though~

Gwendolyn Vrisala

Dallas Liu kills it as Zuko in this series!!!

colby james

Every time I see the past lives, I think if aang saw an avatar that passed away at his age might have hit him hard to focus up a bit more

Law

Ooh! OOH! I've got a GREAT idea! You know how you guys do art stills of each of you as one of the characters for each show you watch? You guys should do the sane thing here, but ACTUALLY cosplay as them and use THAT.

H-Bomb 24

So if you released this on Tuesday on Patreon, will you be releasing this onto YouTube on Wednesdays?

H-Bomb 24

My dude😎 Gotta stick at it bro! It’s one of the few shows that have actually made me tear up over! I do recommend skipping over filler episodes though except for the G8 filler arc. A lot of them are recap episodes and some are just boring stops.

JSB

I'm excited to watch this. I got through 3 episodes solo. It SHOULD be more fun as a group.

Æther Paradox

Fun fact, I’m on episode 46 of the anime! Been watching it while I workout recently

Letts React

Glad to hear!! I would 100% recommend you guys checking out the anime on your own time too! It’s an amazing story! I just know the anime is pushing 1100 episodes so I doubt it will get a spot on the channel.

JSB

We actually already watched that one on our own time and we loved it!

Letts React

Gotta check this out didn’t even know they made a LA! Since you guys are doing LA action reactions now would you guys consider doing the One Piece LA?

JSB
