Honoring Indigenous Peoples' Day and Standing In Solidarity with The Indigenous Communities of Western Alaska
Added 2025-10-14 00:41:13 +0000 UTCOn this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we want to acknowledge and honor the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities around the world. We also hold in our thoughts the residents of Kipnuk, Kwigillingok, and other communities recently impacted by Typhoon Halong. This day is both a moment to celebrate Indigenous heritage and to stand in solidarity with those facing hardship from systemic injustices that still affect them to this day.
On the eve of Indigenous Peoples' Day, we are very devastated to hear the tragic news of the nearly one thousand indigenous residents of Western Alaska, in Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, who have been severely negatively impacted by the heavy rainfall (≈7-14ft/2-4.5m) and hurricane force winds (≈160 mph/257 km/h) of Typhoon Halong (category 4). Many have completely lost their homes due the flooding.
Here is a relief fund for those able to donate: Western Alaska Disaster Relief 2025 Fund in the wake of this disaster. Due to the federal government shutdown limiting access to certain funding, we will attempt to update this post with alternative relief and general fund sources dedicated to helping indigenous people.
