Just look in the mirror.” Isn’t that so true though? To find the warrior we all truly are within we merely only have to look inside ourselves for the strength and the courage to fight our own battles and conflicts. Liz Friedman (a producer for both shows) said that the difference between Hercules and Xena is that Hercules is the hero we all hope is out there fighting for us but Xena is the hero we all hope is in here with us, giving us the means to fight for ourselves. It’s so true. Sure, it’s a way to get around the fact Lucy is pregnant and can’t really do much of the fighting and acrobatics but watching that little girl be proud of herself for being able to stand up for herself and for her loved ones… it’s inspiring to see and think about. To feel.

Girl does not let up for one second. She even takes Aphrodite to task on putting Xena in a vulnerable position and she’s not normally that aggressive. It’s not that she’s changing her beliefs in Season 5. She just realizes that fighting for love matters more. And the thing is that she’s always known that. She just didn’t know how much violence is involved and that’s something she has to reconcile with in herself. The necessity of violence when it comes to love. Not a lot of TV shows will explore that contradiction. But Xena - the crux of it is all about that contradiction. For Gabrielle - it’s just as much a consciousness evolution as it is a physical and spiritual one. That’s why her evolution is so damn immense. Why it’s probably the best character evolution there is. At least for a female character anyway. The amount of times this character has to contradict herself just to uphold what matters more to her. Love. And she does it every single time. Does what hurts her the most to protect, defend, respect and honour what and who she loves the most. It’s not something just anyone can understand like that but she does because she’s the physical embodiment of unconditional and unselfish love. A symbol of sacrifice. And that’s what love is for Xena and Gabrielle. Sacrifice. No it’s not easy to understand but it’s also very difficult to tear your eyes and ears away from it. It’s compelling. Just think about it. Every time, they have two choices. Going against the greater good or adhering to it. And in a way…. They do both because when you’re talking about the greater good, you can’t forget yourself. You’re a part of it. You matter in it too. So it’s less the greater good and more the greater sacrifice. And as hard as that is to take in thematically, emotionally,… it’s incredibly compelling visually. Does this make them the ship of all ships? Well, it depends on what you want out of it. What I always wanted out of it was lessons. So, yes. It does for me. I’ve learned a hell of a lot in watching their love story. A lot of what I consider very crucial life lessons. One of the strongest of which that ‘love’ is not just an emotion and so it cannot be quantifiable. It depends on the self. That’s why it’s very fucking important to have both characters in the ship as the lead main characters. Sure. You can do it with one as a supporting/recurring. But it doesn’t hit anywhere near as well as it should. Xena and Gabrielle are not the shippiest love ship of all time in the sense that the romance is the hugest factor. But what they are is the realist because both are LEAD so what they can build on in individual representation and development - they can apply to the ship dynamic. And so it makes it so worth it. SO. WORTH. IT.

2025-02-28 12:57:35 +0000 UTCThere are a lot of parts to this episode, and I don't think they really fit. For me, this is a clunker of an episode. My low point is Gabby and Aphrodite pretending to be conjoined twins who don't look alike and getting into a oil wrestling match. I don't even like typing that. The most memorable part of this episode is Rose McIver, who played Daphne, simply because she was best remembered there as the young actress who had played Hercules' daughter Ilea on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (and had also been the hydra girl in the first movie.) That's kind of a strange but fitting note, because the REAL most memorable thing about this episode is that it aired alongside the final episode of Hercules. (This was a short 8 episode season for HtLJ.) From this point on, Xena: Warrior Princess was a solo act, to Rob Tapert's chagrin (and mine.) That was the most landmark thing about this episode.
