They have a variety of reasons doing this. Some believe although the city is fortified, the great number of citizens in it has a greater chance to attract the attention of predators. They believe a smaller group has a greater chance to survive.
Some simply want to be free of the influence of the political leaders, since these colonies are independent of any ruling class.
Not many people choose this life, since in the city, people enjoy the services of the Scouts and the Guards. These two groups constantly look out for danger and defend the citizens, this lifts a huge weight off the nymph's shoulder. It's an overall less stressful and safer life. The taxes aren't a huge price to pay. Staying in line and helping along the work of the Guards and Scouts has led to generations of peace and prosperity.
