Ray was a bit too agressive because of his hunger. The goblins did try to take his food away as far as he understood. Did he get what he deserved?
You might notice there's a language barrier here. Ray actually doesn't speak English. The only reason Red ( and by extention, the audience) can understand him, is because Red is a fairy, so he does have the ability to emphathize and understand a wide variety of creatures, including most animals ( excluding insects and creatures without a central nervous system. ), and some plants, like older trees for example.
