Parallax Continued Early Access Release 3

UPDATE 23rd March 2025 - Some big changes here! Please let me know if you run into any issues:

Parallax Continued will be releasing publicly at the start of April

Release 3 adds Parallax textures and shaders to the planets from orbit, along with a few bug fixes and quality of life features!

Please read the info below while the download is in progress! You can find the Optional Extras below. I highly recommend you install Deferred alongside this release.

IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from a previous version, you must delete all Parallax folders before installing the new version as some file paths have changed

These folders are:

  • Parallax

  • Parallax_StockPlanetTextures

  • Parallax_StockScatterTextures

  • Parallax_StockTerrainTextures

There is a LOT of content and code that has been added in this version. Please allow some time for me to act on feedback and potential bug reports as they come in. You'll be emailed when this post is edited with a hotfix, should there be one required.

If you were using Release 2 with other planet mods with Release 2 configs and would like to upgrade to Release 3, you should be fine! You'll just be missing the orbit textures. I'll be providing these for OPM in the coming days.

Release 3 works with Rescale configs too!

Optional Extras

The Lifeless Eve Patch is available [HERE]. This removes the bubbles and flora from Eve, reducing it to its humble Venusian analogue.

Rescale Patches for 2.5x, 3.5x, and 5.4x are available [HERE]. Currently, rescales above 5.4 are unstable at representative density. Use the 5.4x config if rescaling higher.

You can press Alt+M in the main menu to move around, for fun!

You can press Ctrl+P in flight or the tracking station to edit advanced settings.

Notes

There are a few things to note with this release:

*Some of you might find the changes to Eeloo controversial! To restore original Eeloo, you'll want to delete lines 1 to 120 in Parallax_StockPlanetTextures/Configs/StockPlanetAdjustments, and lines 540 to 575 in Parallax_StockPlanetTextures/Config/ParallaxScaled

What's Next?

This is the final full Parallax Continued Early Access release before the mod releases fully and publicly around the start of April. There will still be hotfixes provided here if required and potentially an intermediary version. Whether you plan on sticking around or not, thank you for being a part of the journey. This mod would not exist without your support!

There's a green P button on the right (or bottom, if you're in the KSC view). Set 'collision level' to -1 (minus one) to disable them, click save, and restart your game :)

Hello Linx, I love your mod so far; the best ground textures in KSP. Might be a dumb question, but how do I enable and disable the ground scatter collisions? My rockets always fall over after landing half my rocket on a Mun rock , and I just want an easy landing for once. :) Thank you.

I'm having this issue too, and I wonder if there's a setting to fix this behavior. I'm using triple monitors, (5760 x 1080) and I only have to move the camera a bit to see the "stationary" parallax effect. The problem becomes worse at high altitudes. Down low, there's no issue at all.

Figured out why rescale causes this - The terrain vertices are far too far apart because the terrain is scaled up while the KSC of course stays the same size. This means the resolution of the decal that removes scatters around the KSC effectively drops. Might be unavoidable but will investigate further.

This second issue is actually a vanilla bug. The terrain will swim over the planet on an unmodded install and it's due to your screen resolution. Parallax just hooks into a value the game exposes, so it'll happen to quite a few things I'll check out 10x rescale

Oh, another issue I have is oddly specific and pertains to the terrain texture sort of staying put and failing to follow the camera while the scatters continue to move properly, though this has persisted between versions. I believe it's due to my monitor being 32:9, as it only happens when the center of the screen is relatively far from viewing a planet, while a planet's terrain could still appear on screen. It happens both on the X and Y axis, strangely.

Heya, I've rescaled the stock system to 10x default scale, and the scatters seem to still spawn inside the KSC after removing my config and updating to the latest Parallax version. There is an empty patch, but it is slightly behind the KSC and the launchpad and front of the runway have trees growing in them.

Interesting, it would be useful to get a player.log from you (It's in AppData/LocalLow/Squad/Kerbal Space Program) if you can. If you use CKAN, you could go the extra mile and send me your .CKAN file so I can import your exact setup to my install and test it out on my end. Cheers!

***Solved! I was still using rescale configs and those are no longer necessary*** FYI the latest update has some conflicts. TBF I'm using a lot of mods including OPM and Kcabelloh. Whatever the problem is causes a crash to desktop when attempting to load a save. Main menu loads fine. This occurs even with new saves. Yes, I deleted the previous installs folders and even tried a settings reset. Rolling back to the previous version stopped the crashing. No crash logs were generated.

There are mods like 'Vans KSC' or 'KSC Extended' that add more buildings. This new feature listed in the changes that stops objects from spawning inside buildings or runways won't yet apply to those mods - they will need to add support for this which will take time The bit about scatterer is that eclipses weren't properly applying to the planets from orbit - the atmosphere would be shadowed but the terrain would be unaffected. This is fixed now, too

Hello! I just downloaded parallax v3 following the install instructions, but I don't seem to have the changes from orbit. I made sure to delete any existing parallax folders from v2 and delete the settings.cfg file, and I have all the dependencies.

No, the warning is there for a reason - the reflection quality should have never allowed users to set it as high as you can. It kills performance, especially with parallax, because you have to re-render the scene 6 times at the target resolution. Drop it to 256, you will barely notice a visual difference and the warning will disappear.

when I opened game it told me like "the reflection quality is set at this and for the max performance you should set it to this" is there a way to turn the message off.

I have the LegacyUpdater working but it's updating only 4 Legacy Parallax Scatter configs out of a large number (KSS2). Does Continued log success/failure of these updates? Could I prevail you to have a look at a successful legacy file and a non-successful one and see if anything stands out?

Hi, I can't reproduce this issue - I can click Okay on the popup in the main menu just fine. To fix it, lower your reflection resolution to 256 or below. Btw, there is little to no visual difference but a HUGE performance difference - that is why the popup is there. You're butchering your game's performance by having them set so high. It's equivalent to having 6 monitors plugged in also rendering KSP at the resolution you set them to. I won't be adding a way to remove this popup

I installed the hotfix last night and get a warning about the texture resolutions being set very high. I cannot click ok once in main menu and have to reload the game again. It works in the loading screen. Anyway to disable that popup?

The auto-updater appears to be broken now with the changes in Release 3. Possibly to do with the change of the directory to ParallaxContinued? No files are dropping in Exports/LegacyUpgrades and it's not indicating that its trying to update or griping about it. Update: Be useful if I would fufill the dependencies (KspBurst). However only a very small subset of terrain scatters are now being updated.

Cool! Have it now, as far as overlays, hoping you can deduce, not sure if the mod is still being developed, or maintained, you might know more than I on that front. Humbly I state, if you fixed that, remove the edit 1 note in the post, or many others might think it's still a bug (the terrain, not the map overlays) :)

This has been fixed for a few weeks! The only known issue with ScanSat now is the overlay maps not working, but that's a different can of worms. Make sure you download the newest patch (the download link in the post - I just swap the link out when I upload a patch)

For all planets, just delete the Parallax_StockPlanetTextures folder. For some planets, you'll need to find the ParallaxScaled config in the planet textures folder, open it, and delete the ParallaxScaledProperties nodes for the planets you don't want. You'll need to do the same in the StockPlanetAdjustments.cfg file and the ReplacePlanetMeshes.cfg file, too

Hey, i just downloaded the mod, but i cant seem to get it to work, i downloaded the mod on it's own, didn't work, downloaded kopernicus all i got was "cannot load custom planetary system" despite me deleting all my mods except volumetric clouds. what am i doing wrong? i will save my KSP.log i hope you can help. I deleted all parallax folders and configs before installing this release but when I launch it gives me the critical error: "Parallax_StockPlanetTextures/Kerbin/PluginData/Kerbin_Height.dds for planet: Kerbin", do you know why I am missing the file? And maybe how I should fix this?

Hello. As of upgrading to this version 3 of Parallax all atmospheric bodies have no visible land mass from map view and orbit. They're all water. Where should I begin to diagnose this issue? Mod list is all the usual suspects. No Ckan.

For me it seems it was caused by the built-in SCREENSHOT_SUPERSIZE setting. I fixed this by setting back to 0, but do you have any plans to support this @Linx?

Not yet. It's reasonably low on the priorities list at the moment, as more likely than not Scansat will need to adapt to Parallax rather than the other way around. The priority right now is getting eclipses working again

Hello, whenever I get close to a body (about to land), the game crashes when using release 3s parallax configs. Is there any known cause for this? Presumably its happening when the game switches from loading orbital parallax items to near but I do not know why.

I got it working. I still had my old game instance on ckan so i was loading the mods to a folder that wasn't doing anything. It looks great now!

It does work fine for me overall with deferred but for some reason Kerbin specifically loses its parallax texture in orbit. I'll send some screenshots on discord later when I get a chance.

Hello, I've been trying to run this for a couple nights now and whenever I've tried opening the game it looks just like stock and i can't see the GUI for the mod. I installed Kopernicus and KSP Burst with Ckan, but other than that I'm stock and fresh out of the box. I haven't done any modding for a long time so I'm stumped, but do you know what I'm doing wrong? Thank you in advance

Hi Linx, thanks again for the work on this mod, it's really amazing. When I open up the game I get; "Old Parallax configs detected! They have upgraded and exported to the Legacy Upgrade (folder)" I think its the MPE configs but I downloaded the latest yesterday, any ideas how to resolve this? Thanks

Hey, I tried to download Release 2, as the Github page says that version supports JNSQ. But I didn't have access to the Google Drive file. Is release 3 absolutely broken with JNSQ, or should I be fine?

I'm having an issue where orbital resource scan overlays are not showing up. I did a test where I uninstalled everything but parallax (2/17 update) and its dependencies (with kopernicus version 223) and the issue was still there

Please forgive me if this has already been raised, but I'm experiencing an odd graphic issue with this version: https://pixelfed.ch/i/web/post/797846538787079463 There are concentric stripes, and splotched pixelized areas on planets and moons seen from the middle distance, as illustrated in the above image.

Looks great! If I could make one suggestion, it might be a good idea to set the default scatter collision setting to nothing, to minimize people accidentally breaking their bases on updating/installing (speaking from experience)

Hello, I don't if I've install parallax wrong but Minmus still has its stock texture and sometimes appears fully white also there is barely any ground scatter and its the same as the free version if you could help that would be very kind, thank you.

I'm working on better ways to clear the KSC of trees. For now, you might need to go the manual route - 1. Disable colliders and restart the game 2. In flight, press Ctrl+P to bring up the Parallax GUI 3. Click the tabs at the top to get to the Scatter Editor 4. Find the 'OakTree' or 'PineTree' scatters 5. Expand the DistributionNoise dropdown and change the "seed" until the trees no longer grow inside the KSC 6. Export the config with overwrite enabled, enable colliders, and restart the game

Any way to remove the trees around KSC? With KSC Extended on a 2.5 rescale the trees are covering some of the pads.

Thanks for the report, I'm already aware of this at the moment. The ScanSat patch was a quick hotfix to get everything working without severe issues but right now the overlays can't be fixed without some extra thinking. Problem is the 'thinking' is on ScanSat's side rather than mine and the mod is going through a transitionary period - I have to come up with something creative from the outside!

I didn't play before whatever issue there was with ScanSat was fixed so I don't know if it is the same thing, but with the latest version I have an issue with ScanSat where when I put on the planet overlay I can see the details from it when I hover over a spot (like an ore percentage) but the actual colours of the overlay don't show up (So the planet just looks normal). In case it matters, it has been a little bit since I used the planet overlay and have installed the following mods since then: VaporCones Firefly 4kSP_Expanded This isn't causing a big problem or anything I just thought I would let you know.

Duna's surface has been a pale orange since Parallax 2.0 released in 2022. Its orbit texture has just been updated to match. I tried to keep its red texture but I just couldn't get the slabs or rocks to look good. I might try in the future to get closer to its vanilla colouration, but it will be challenging

Have a problem with the texture of Kerbin in the tracking center. It looks like the game thinks the KSC is a couple hundred miles West of where it should be on the texture. And then I have a couple errors stating something like "Celestial Body Gilly has more than 1 PQSmods loaded" and then it was complaining about not having a "white.dds" texture for "Riga" which I don't believe I even have installed. Let me know if you want my logfile.

I can only see the land texture at extremely low angles, I get the same effect just zooming out from the launch pad with a vehicle on launch pad, it transitions to a water reflection rather than land, not sure of the precise altitude

Im not sure if i did something wrong but all of the bodies have ring shadows on the light side

On the Tracking Station I actually never see the Kerbin texture. Only water. Do you have any Discord to report or chat about these issues?
