Giving An Inch

Hey, everyone! There are a few posts tonight, and this is the first thereof! Descriptions will be fairly scarce, because I'm very tired, and I still have a good amount of work to do. This first story, however, is ready to read, and it's called "Giving An Inch!"

Miles is a mystographer, one of the brave souls that charts out newly-discovered dungeons. This one seems safe enough...but are appearances deceiving?

Read "Giving An Inch" here!

In general I just think some transparency or honesty in these matters would be appreciated. Whether or not that includes promises to complete the outstanding stories is something I'm agnostic on, personally, and not just because of the past year suggesting how unworkable that may or may not be. I see my support here (and don't think anybody is obligated to join me on this, as it's a privilege of my own circumstance) as truly just that: not a purchase or exchange, but support, something that in some small way maybe keeps life going for a writer who's got talent and imagination that I want to foster and see more of, inasmuch as I can while I have the resources. Obviously I'd love it if every story posted tomorrow because it's More of the Stuff I Like and I Guess Also Paid for In Some Small Respect. But beyond that, I know the content creator grind, with a few high-profile exceptions, is almost always a side-grind of some sort, and can be draining and difficult. And I've been around long enough that I've seen plenty of well meaning creatives ground under their own millstones because they think overpromising is the best way to deal with feeling like they've disappointed people. And I'd really hate to see that happen here! So ultimately, I guess, it's not just transparency or honesty I'd like to see, but some realism and clarity in terms of goals moving forward, whatever those end up being.

2 – Maybe your interest in these old ideas have faded and you just can’t bring yourself to writing them. Instead, maybe you’ll continue to release new stories, some which will be FREE to make up for the old ones which was paid for. It’ll not be every story, of course, so you can keep an income, but maybe every one-in-six or one-in-eight, for example. 3 – The backlog is just too big for you to handle, even if you wanted to. I don’t know your personal circumstances, but maybe it’s just unrealistic for you to accomplish that. Okay, that’s, of course, not ideal, but maybe the solution lies in honesty and this community. Each story you release cost us 2$, not including any VAT taxes. That’s, what, a bottle of water at a gas station or less? While the most ideal solution would, of course, be for us to get what we paid for, I’m just opening up for the POSSIBILITY of this community to maybe “write off” some of your “dept” so to speak. It would have to be discussed, of course, and I think maybe a 2/3 majority should be required. But I bring up the idea because if you really can’t see yourself getting through the backlog then perhaps the only reasonable solution is to see about reducing the backlog somehow. I welcome any other users to comments and maybe start a dialogue if others feel that’s a good idea.

Now, back in the “So, what’s going on?” post user ‘Necrotic Puppet’ raised the completely valid point that it was a lot of a backlog for you to get through without getting paid, which made sense and I was completely okay with you releasing new content to get an actual income. However, if in a full year you’ve not managed to get through any of the backlog, that leave the question of “when” of “if” you will? You didn’t set a deadline for when you’d be getting through stories from your backlog, which was fair enough I thought, and a year, while seeming like a lot of time, can be very short… However, if we’ve sitting in the same situation next year, maybe it’s a symptom of a larger problem, so I figured talking about it now seemed a reasonable idea. Where I’m sitting, I see 3 possible solutions. There maybe be more, but these are the ones I could see. 1 – There really is no problem, you’ve maybe just been busy, but you can totally handle getting through your backlog slowly over time while you release new content. It might take a year or two, but you can do it.

So, it has been a year now since the “So, what’s going on?” post which addressed the issues we as a supporters had raised about placeholder stories never getting updated but still taking payment. So, now seemed a good time to write this comment and maybe start a bit of a dialogue in the community about how things have gone. At least I think it seemed appropriate, but people are free to disagree. I’ll spread the text out over more than 1 comment since I’ve had issues with large comments not showing up in a post. First off Carol I’d like to say I really think you’ve stepped up since then. Every post has either included a finished story or had one added swiftly, as far as I remember. And, of course, the stories have been great to read, there was never an issue with the content or quality of your work, you’ve always been fantastic at that. You might not see this opinion because people, me included, do not comment on your success, and for that I’m sorry, but let me make it clear that I think you do awesome work every time you release a new story. However, there is the old baggage to consider. I might be mistaken, it’s entirely possible as I have not combed through all the old posts, but to my knowledge none of the stories on the “to do” pile have been updated with an actual story. If I’m mistaken, I’m sorry. Assuming I’m not mistaken and you’ve not found the time to work on these old promised stories, that leaves the question of what is to be done?
