Wagler's monotreme river pterodactyl

Full colour illustration of Pterodactylus as a swimming monotreme, as hypothesised by Johann Wagler (1800-1832).

Wagler saw pterosaurs; alongside ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and present-day monotremes; as members of a unique vertebrate "class" which he named Gryphi.

Comments

Yes, he thought they were all members of an intermediate clade between birds and mammals.
