816. Inside Dads: The Edge, and Other Survival Thrillers

Our limited series with co-hosts Abe Epperson and David Bell digs deep into the internet meme of the “dad movie.” We can all probably name a dad movie, but can we isolate the tropes that really make this a bona fide film genre? Let’s find out!

To Abe’s umbrella point at the end- isn’t the ultimate dad commandment to fix shit? It’s for a sure a “what would you do” and I think it’s also a “look at this dad fixing a situation that you as a dad could never fix”

I think the ultimate divorced dad Romantic fantasy is Tombstone. The one where Wyatt Earp is almost Forced by his dying friend (who's killed by sexy wanton partying) to overcome his dad-ness and run away with a hot young actress who's desperately chasing his stoic eyes. I realize this is subjective but I would go to bat for this theory.

I find it interesting that Dads love historical contexts like Marcus Aurelius, Caesar, Alexander the Great, etc.

I had an interesting thought while listening to you too. I remember this movie well, because of some of the problematic elements you mentioned. It's tonally distinct in its weirdness, and part of that is because, as you say, Hopkins has no arc. But what if that's the whole point? I don't believe the movie is saying that rich people are better. Maybe the real point is that he is a man who *can't* have an arc. He's so smart that he's more or less learned everything he's ever going to learn, yet there's no soulfulness, no joy in the learning. He can't change because even all his accumulation of both wealth and knowledge left him joyless.
