Thank you so much for referencing Naussica! I almost fuckin cried tears of joy when I saw the depths for the first time. I'd also say: you guys mentioned that its hard to beat the feeling of seeing Hyrule for the first time in BOTW. The vastness. The emptiness. I'd argue that having experienced seeing Hyrule from walking out of the cave, I knew what to expect. Skydiving off of the first island gave me a feeling that I didn't think could ever be replicated. Then it happened again with the depths.

I forgot about this one, gonna start playing on Saturday

On closer inspection it appears MGS 5 episode has been washed away. IHeart and Spotify both skip from God of War 4 to Fallout 4 (MGS 5 released between those two).

All the old episodes should be listenable on iheart’s podcast listing.

You mention listening back to the old BOTW podcast. Since going to iHeart and back my podcatcher is unable to download any of those old episodes ( originally I was trying to relisten to MGS5 episode). Any advice on how to access those old episodes?

I am so happy I became a patron before this show went behind the pay wall. I love hearing the passion these two have presenting this art form. In reference to the BOTW Michael->TOTK Michael. As someone dealing with CPTSD and such, his honest portrayal of his growth and setbacks and growth out of those set backs has made me feel a lot less alone. It's the kind of stuff that makes me feel a little less crazy.

Hot take: I liked this game significantly less than BOTW. I don't particularly enjoy building/puzzle/crafting games, so besides making unique weapons or making planes, the meld mechanic didn't do much for me. I also don't care for survival/resource management stuff, so the whole vibe of the underground area didn't work for me. The one big improvement for me was the sky islands, which I loved, but besides that it just felt like BOTW without the sense of wonder. Still one of the best games of the year, strong 9/10. That said, Baldur's Gate 3 resonated way more with me and was an easy lock for GOTY.

This game is truly the best game in the purest sense. Its like an amazingly entertaining Rubik's cube but each color is its own fun game system or visual spectacle. Then, you realize as you twist the cube, each system will interact with the adjacent squares and creates something new and fun to experience. THEN, they somehow add a story that makes playing with the cube all the more compelling and meaningful. One thing that I would like to point out is that many of the building systems can trace their roots back to Garry's Mod. That may sound like a knock against TotK but Nintendo took those building tools and so perfectly inlaid them into their game that it's not a ripoff, its mastering the concepts that Garry's Mod introduced.

"you can attach a shield to a sword and it's dumb and doesn't do anything" If you use that with a 2 handed weapon, it will actually allow you to block/parry

This game was what my kids and I did while we ate breakfast basically from launch day until August. My true awful face was finally witnessed by them when I had to fight five consecutive Lynals in that one goddam outfit coliseum and none of us have been the same. 10/10 would play again.

regarding hole comment: in Baldur’s Gate 3 you can also fall into holes in the ground which lead you into the underdark, when my friend and I first accidentally fell in during the phase spider encounter we were amazed to discover that instead of just dying we discovered a new location. I haven’t played TotK but I definitely plan to, but I think BG3 is still a contender for game of the year for the facts that a) it was made by a small developer and BLEW AWAY everyone’s expectation, and b) did something new by gamifying the worlds most popular ttrpg. I’m sure I’ll love TotK but BG3 stands out to me as a unique contender for GOTY
