As an N64 kid, I had only a vague idea the PS1 even existed. And I didn't care that much about it because I had my Mario and my Zelda and my Banjo, among others. If I even had any concept of the cartridge vs. CD thing, I doubt it made much of a difference to me. Maybe to older gamers it did, but the N64 was my first. And it's important to note that cartridges did come with their own advantages, like not having to wait for anything to load. So it's not quite so cut-and-dry.
