A pleasant surprise indeed! Creepy Castle is a perfect Halloween song, much like Grant Kirkhope's other spooky masterpiece Mad Monster Mansion.
Both the Banjo games and DK64 have hugely dynamic soundtracks. Creepy Castle alone has an outdoor version (this one), an indoor version, a basement dungeon version, a swinging ballroom version, a mine cart version, an underwater version, and yes, a boss version. It's one of the things that make his soundtracks stick with you. By the time you finish a world, you WILL have its main melody drilled into your head, perhaps forever.
I also love that his boss themes take that main melody and turn it into an intense actiony remix, regardless of how chill the original song was. Toys R Alive and Mad Jack are a perfect example of that. (Crystal Caves and Army Dillo Armageddon, also on the list somewhere, are an even bigger contrast. Do try to listen to those two together if you remember.)

I’ve played a bunch of games that grant kirkhope has composed for and he sounds (not necessarily spooky) just how you described. If he ever tried to sound much different I feel like he’d struggle to do so, he has his own sound and he’s damn good at it.

OOOOH! BANANA! Considering Creepy Castle didn't make it onto the VGM Vibes, I thought we wouldn't see it for a while.
