Oh, that's totally Luigi. :P
I'm not a super big fan of the humming version myself out of context, which is why I requested the Brawl version instead. Glad it at least gave you an introduction to Luigi as a character though. In-game, you'll hear that version when there is no other music playing and Luigi is filling the silence with his own nervous humming. Otherwise, you'll hear something like Dark Hallway instead.
Luigi is definitely not a FAN of haunted stuff lol. To say that he's cursed and it follows him around would actually be more accurate. The original Luigi's Mansion had him being forced to save Mario from a haunted house and he's pretty much been characterized as a 'heroic coward' ever since. The type who is easily frightened (especially by ghosts) but pushes through his fear to save the day regardless, which is what I would call true bravery. The Mario & Luigi RPG series also leans heavily into that characterization, to contrast his 'Let's-a-go!' brother.
In any case, the Luigi's Mansion motif is extremely iconic. I play these games every year around Halloween. They're top-tier in the 'whimsical horror' genre. As for 'bad' Mario games, you won't really find that in the main series. It's mostly just the occasional spin-off that doesn't land in the same way as its predecessors (newer Paper Mario games, some of the sports titles, etc).

It's funny you say that, since Simon Belmont's trailer for Ultimate heavily featured Luigi wandering around the typical Castlevania environment and getting the piss scared out of him by everything in sight. XD

"Loser" might be too strong, but Luigi's definitely not as brave and confident as Mario. Never played any of the LM games, but from what I've heard, they're centered around being spooky, with the cowardly Luigi exploring a haunted house. I imagine the original main theme to be Luigi humming to calm himself down.
Also, besides the live action movie, there's the new CGI movie that was generally loved. Try it, it has a lot for the fans, but it's also just a fun movie in its own right.

When I heard the Brawl version of the Mansion theme (for the first time here), I thought to myself, "Forget 'Luigi for Smash Bros', more like 'Luigi for Castlevania'."

Funny enough, the humming already grew on me. It's been stuck in my head since. First impressions sure are interesting.

Yeah, that vocal track from Luigi's voice actor doesn't actually play with the song I'm pretty sure. I believe he hums that to himself in rooms that are absent to music to keep himself calm. For worst Mario game, I have heard all of the Paper Mario games after Super are straight up garbage.
