Sonic CD - Stardust Speedway ~ Bad Future (US/JP)

Fun fact: There is a sonic game where you transition between day and night cycles. The game is called 'Sonic Unleashed. where sonic will run through a day time and night time level of the same place he's in. Every location sonic visits around the world, has a day and night theme to it. Day themes are fast paced and fits well with the action. Some night themes can have a slow and jazzy feel to it. There is a day time theme I would recommend, and it's "Sky Scraper Scamper Day," it's a fast paced saxophone song. And the person playing on it does some wild rips that sounds improvised at times. Just know that song has a nasty alto/tenor saxophone playing.

I was so excited that you were listening to this song that I didn’t notice the US/JP in the title, ended up getting jump scared by US version

God, both of these are absolute classics (although I’m more partial to the Japanese version as it’s what I heard first). So, Sonic CD was developed by the Japanese team to be a sequel the the first Sonic game while Sonic 2 was developed by the American team. Sonic 2 came out first in 1992 while CD came out in 1993. It’s a 2D side-scroller like the other classic games but the level design is very different as the team wanted to focus more on a theme of exploration, this lead to many of the stages being rather difficult and confusing to navigate. The Bad Future part of the title (or B mix for the Japanese version) is in reference to the time period the music plays. The gimmick of Sonic CD is that there are signposts that Sonic can run past and use to travel through time. Each stage has 4 times: Past, Present (the default), Bad Future, and Good Future. Each of these come with their own variations of the stage theme. Stardust Speedway Bad Future is mostly associated with Metal Sonic as it’s the song that plays when you finally go against him near the end of the game. It’s not a boss fight but in fact a race, although Metal Sonic can still damage you. The Bad Future version of Stardust Speedway has been remixed many different times for clashes with Metal Sonic and while the Japanese version tends to be favoured over the US one, the US one has been remixed a few times too. Originally, the Japanese soundtrack would play for those in Japan and PAL regions while the US version played for those in America. Although the US version only had music for the Present, Bad Future, and Good Future versions of stages. For some reason the Past tracks were the same as Japan’s. However, in 2011 SEGA hired Christian Whitehead to port the game to modern consoles and his version is considered the definitive one as it comes with the option to switch between the JP and US soundtrack, a playable Tails ( who wasn’t in the original) and a bunch of other extras. Anyways, great work as always. Was happy to see you react to arguably one of the most beloved non-vocal songs in the series.

that random gamer

simply iconic.
