Patreon Changes

Quick heads up to you folks, I plan to change our Patreon tiers a bit in the next few days.

My goal is to keep things exactly the same, which is why I'm changing things.

Allow me to explain.

Patreon is changing how they handle fees- in a way that impacts backers. They're switching from having creators cover those fees to having supporters cover the fees- so a nice round $5 pledge turns into like a $5.51 pledge or something silly.

I don't want your pledges to transform into irritating decimal-laden beasties, so I'm gonna do the math and try to keep the actual amount you're contributing remain just the same as it is now.

So I'll change the $5 tier to a $4.51 tier- but, at the end of the month, you should still be paying a flat $5, just like before.

Maybe if we're lucky Patreon will put all the junky detail of fees back under the hood- but for now, I plan to change the levels on the Dreamkeepers Patreon so that you wind up paying a pleasant round number.

...I had to do math... WHY DID THEY MAKE ME DO MATH.

So I plan to change the tiers thusly:

50 = 48.25

20= 19.09

10 = 9.37

5 = 4.51

2= 1.60

1= .63

I'm posting this tonight, and modifying tiers in a few days, so you have a bit of a heads up before we implement the shift.

(I'm kinda crossing my fingers and hoping Patreon reverts to its original form, so we won't have to do it. But a few days will tell the tale.)

Sorry for the rigamarole- to make up for it, we'll draw two Sketch of the Month illustrations this month, and compensate for all this horrid math with more art. Probably the only sensible countermeasure.

Thank you for supporting our work, we're happy with any decisions you need to make on your end, and I hope you're having a pleasant evening. 8 )

If I understand correctly, we can start with the legacy tier ($5 for me) and be charged the extra 51 cents, for a total of $5.51 per month? Or does it remain at $5? How do we change to the new tier at $4.51, which ends up being $5? If we drop the tier here and change to the new Maker site, will Patreon still work for us, or all the content will be the same on the new site and Patreon goes away? (I think you did explain this in the e-mail). Sorry for all the questions, but I'm kind of at a loss with this change (pun intended). Thanks!

I hope not- I'm about to find out though, we have a Plan B for $1 backers either way.

Wasn't there something about not being able to offer a smaller tier than $1?

McClaw

That's awesome of you David. Your dedication to your fans and customers is a major reason why we will continue to love and support your business and art

Fingers crossed- I understand if they need to make some alterations to their fee system, but it seems reasonable to hope that things stay simple on the customer side of the equation.

Glad to hear it! I didn't doubt that you would, but I wanted you to know that I support you, regardless of Patreon. I'll admit to only discovering Dreamkeepers after Vol 2but it's been an an amazing discovery since then. Thank you for your work, and your creation.

Hope this nor the inevitable Patreon exodus don't take away from your income and ability to do DK full-time,you worked so hard to reach this point…

I said the same thing, but I'd hold off on actually doing this until/unless it's clear that they won't budge. The CEO tweeted earlier that he's seen all the backlash and is "collecting his thoughts" and will share more next week. https://twitter.com/jackconte/status/939309744451440640 So hopefully, this won't be necessary. We'll see!

FluffKevlar

Thanks! We'll definitely keep drawing regardless- I'm pretty sure this is just a bump in the road, and Patreon will adjust. If not, alternate platforms and funding methods will emerge- the important thing is to have fun, share cool stuff with you guys, and I trust the rest to sort itself out. 8 )

David, I thank you for going through this...and you really shouldn't have to. Know that I'll still be supporting you regardless of the actions of Patreon...well within reason, or course. When the email stating "We're adding on a 100% surcharge to all patrons", I'll just fall back on Interac or Western Union if you don't mind too much. Keep drawing, keep writing, keep making content; I and others will be there. Please never doubt this.

Greg Perry

A very nice thing David. Something you shouldnt have to do. My pledge remains the same regardless. A toast to you both!

Wow David, that's a very nice thing to do! Thank you sooo much!! I'm sorry that this is happening but I'm very glad you've found a way to combat this new, annoying system. Math, amirite XD. Anyways, while I'm very pleased to hear that you'll actually be doing a second SotM, don't pressure yourself too much on it. I for one am grateful enough that you decided upon this calculation plan to spare us these new taxes :)

Benjamin Varner

Wow. No one I've read from so far have come up with this solution. Congratulations!

How nice of you,thank you for the transparency. The changes are questionable even with the whole "putting artists" first facade,granted it is a platform to empower artists and I don't see many alternatives, but still.
