Mixed Bag of Holding: Dungeons & Dragons Movie (2000)

The Band of Boobs watch and discuss the critically panned D&D movie from 2000 and enter a HEATED debate.

Mixed Bag of Holding: Dungeons & Dragons Movie (2000)

Comments

Um, actually (sorry I’ve been binging dropout lmao) Caldwell’s rating of “an upside down, backwards A” is a real thing; it’s a symbol used in mathematical proofs that means “for all” and would therefore just be pronounced “for all”

Jeremy Voigtschild

I’m so sorry for commenting on a post that is years old, but I just need to say that I listened to this episode half a dozen times without seeing the movie (because I like myself) but I watched it since the new one is about to be in theatres thinking “we’ll if there are some Easter eggs or references I’d at least like to understand them”. Just finished the movie and listening to this episode again as like a short-rest for my own experience and wow. I used to relate to jake because I also genuinely enjoy some awful movies (the devil’s carnival, all of the Step Up movies) but this is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. There are pieces i enjoyed…I can’t think of them right now…but jesus fucking christ I’m never not siding with murph on things like this. He is the only person who’s opinions i consistently trust and agree with and fucking hell if the new movie references this at all I may cry in disappointment. Murph, I’m so sorry that you’ve been gaslit. Jake, I’m sorry for ever agreeing with you.

Kal. Just Kal.

Emily "not watching" the movie is like an audience surrogate for me. It's my favorite.

The Seasonal Goblin

OKAY I am a few years late but this is a movie my siblings and I watched obsessively in the early 2000s. Jake is so right for defending it. And also I will not rewatch this as an adult, I do not want to ruin it for myself which is my fear

Kaileigh Rose

After nearly 3 years of content and 99 wonderful episodes, this is the best thing they have made so far, by far

Jareth

Jake valiantly defending the movie, with Murph and Caldwell brutally murdering it, all while Emily siding with Jake even though she only watched half of it, is probably my favorite thing that’s ever happened on this podcast 😂

I would 100% listen to a podcast that’s just Murph going off on stuff. This is that 8 Bit Book Bud content I had been missing!

Joe D’Antonio

Imagine seeing you here

Jake 100% needs to run a one shot continuing the story of Snails and force Murph to play in it!

Renevar

I have seen this movie at least 5 times and I struggle to remember any of the recap you discuss

Graphic Orc Birth sounds like a nerdy death metal band name

Bless Murph for naruto talk

What's Citizen Kane get? Literally a D. That movie is a fucking SNOOZE

1man2hands

Poor Jeremy Irons, love him, but he can't fantasy pick films! D&D and Eragon, like wow. lol

Jesymka

I could listen to Caldwell say "zone of truth gurl!" on repeat forever

Caoimhe

This has been, for 20 years, the absolute worst film I have ever seen at the cinema. And I can absolutely guarantee that will it will never be beaten. Simply atrocious in every single way.

Geoff Early

I believe Murphy and Caldwell. Jake and Emily lost all credibility.

Good Guy Josh

We ended up doing a virtual watch party of this movie with friends of ours because of this podcast. I died during the grape scene.

i saw the movie at my store, thought about getting it but saw such bad reviews, might still pick it up, its been in the store for about atleast 3 years now, in the front row as i keep looking at it and thinking about buying it

HOW DID YOU GUYS MISS THAT RICHARD OBRIAN IS ALSO RIFF RAFF FROM ROCKY HORROR

Willem Rogers

Listening to Murph get gas lit for over an hour was so hilariously entertaining. Great job with this one guys!

Daniel Green

If you all are still taking suggestions for shows to watch and review that are months past their prime in the public consciousness, you should watch The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance! It totally fulfills that need for a Henson puppetry-fueled fantasy epic. I have a feeling you all would like it.

Adrianne Reimer

You got your rogue, you got your rogue.

Will Day

You guys need to play the sewers of sumdall module that’s based on the movie!!!

Expedia the Forbbiden One

Me: *nods solemnly*

Laura Bram

Emily: No one talk down to Thora Birch, she was in Now & Then!!

Laura Bram

#TeamMurph

BlurryVizion

Hearing the desperation in Murph’s voice when trying to convince Jake and Emily that this movie wasn’t garbage is absolutely sending me

OMG! I just remembered the BEST DND films that you guys NEED to watch! It's The Gamers series! Movie one is great, movie two is even better and movie three, is actually kinda crap and not about DND but I copyright free Magic The Gathering. But the first two are SO GOOD! It's exactly what you want; a bunch of people playing DND around a table, then cutting to the same actors playing their characters in costume. Did I mention that it's good? 😁

Emily

Here's the thing: this movie is bad but it's ABSOLUTELY the kind of crap a bunch of friends playing DND would come up with. 🤣

Emily

The fact that everyone didn't agree with murph is insane. watching this movie was eye torture. Also Marlon Wayans is insanely sexist. so overall bad film.

Andrew Bonkginya

And its got Melora in it so its fitting for naddpod.

I love how different their views are while almost always everyone agrees with one side, the audience is almost never split

Sawyer Rogers

IKR?! He WROTE Rocky Horror!

Rebecca Groves

Wrath of the Dragon God is legit good. It is an actual representation of D&D.

8BitBruché

When we watched, my group made similar comments lol. They had a scene or two that was very reminiscent of Power Rangers and the comment was made "He should have just stayed Jimmy Olsen." 😂. You are definitely not alone brother 🙏🖖😂

BlurryVizion

Surprised no one mentioned Justin Whalin was Jimmy Olsen in Lois and Clark The New Adventures Of Superman and starred in Susie Q with Amy Jo Johnson of Power Rangers fame. Maybe the Boobs weren't into that show or movie. This movie definitely killed Justin's career

Dave Johnson

Anyone ever hear of the 1982 film "Mazes and Monsters" starring a young Tom Hanks?

I screamed laughed so many times, this really brightened my day :')

Catalina Canales

Update: my partner and I had to pause to laugh for ten minutes 'cause, out of context, "I'm sorry about Snails," is the funniest thing I've ever heard.

Katy Tacik

Murph's truly unbridled rage gives me so much joy. It's so great to hear how upset he is with this movie 😂

Diana

Woo woo woo back the f**k up! You guys didn't know that was Richard O'Brien!! He was in Rocky Horror! He is king! But then again I'm English I'm trained I finding his face.

Amy Driver

Next Campaign: Just play in this world.

Sarah

This honestly just made me want to watch the movie. I need to know what made Murph so mad.

Katy Tacik

"If this is a B, what is Citizen Kane?!" 😂

DMCDawg

Anytime Murph gets truly indignant, it just brings me such joy. You guys are so funny!

Katherine Clarke

Oh my God the grape scene is killing me

Dave Johnson

Read the synopsis of the 3rd movie and it actually sound's interesting. Now just hoping they pulled it off. For Pelor y'all need to watch it and do a mix bag about it.

Canid

To entice some more, Kevin Hart is in it as a Warlock.

Brian Jones

Jake falls through a carpet into some really strange oatmeal then sucked into a gem that Thiala gets to wear.

Jon Whitehead

I gotta put something forward for a future Mixed Bag... Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. 2009 Comedy Central Original fantasy comedy spoof. You're welcome.

Brian Jones

They need to watch Mazes and Monsters, next. So bad, so wonderful.

Miss Ter Cole

So when are Murph and Emily going to get hired to write the next D&D movie?

Whitney Peterson

I loved this Mixed bag. On the point of them saying that they should "release the map cut" of this movie, I had it on DVD at one point and I'm almost certain there is in fact a deleted scene from inside the map. It's been like 19 years since then, so I don't remember what the contents of that scene were but I spent so much time on the extras and little DVD games of this movie. Like three times longer than the runtime of the movie.

Dang it got 10% on rotten tomatoes

David Pugh

... this exists?

Liz Ruifrok

Should I mention that I saw this in theaters?

Liz Ruifrok

When Hardwon dies next week - Jake’s defense of this turd of a movie is why.

All Pulp! No Juice!

Give us the podcast name, my man, I want to listen

Dave Johnson

So the solution is to make a better d&d movie. Make Bahumia a movie, is what I am saying. Problem solvedddd

Emma Margaret

Jake made me laugh so much in this one!

Camara Fairweather

My DnD crew just watched that last week and did a review podcast on it!!! How funny! What a small world lol.

BlurryVizion

The 2005 D&D movie has a character billed as Melora, obligatory part 2

Michael Meehan

You guys should definitely watch the 2nd AND the 3rd installments of this saga for the next mixed bags!!

Elsa Miesch

I was going to watch the whole movie and then listen to the mix bag, but i'm 30 minutes into it and I think it would be funnier to swap and listen to the mix bag first and then finish the film

Dave Johnson

Do NOT watch Uwe Boll's Dungeon of Dragons movie! If you thought this one was bad...

This is the best version of that movie ever

Michael K Merkle

Ok I KNOW for a fact that they talked about working at an ice cream shop before on a short rest or something. Does anyone remember which one?

Max Weisskopf

I loved this movie as a kid- I have very fond memories. I did not realize what movie you all were talking about until you described the oatmeal quicksand carpet. Lol. Maybe I need to revisit a movie I used to watch on VHS when I was 5

Rachel Bakke

That was too good. I haven't laughed so much in so long. That's a solid bag y'all

Taylor Schult

I feel like the character that Emily really hated is a teifling. Really love this show and everything you guys are doing

Nicole Vujevich

What! We are. We are entertained. 🤯

Canid

No one: Murph: -drops over 4 hours of content in one day- Much love from the east coast. This will carry me through the literal entirety of my morning tomorrow.

Brandalf The Bae

It’s going to be a wild night. 3 shows to listen to!!!

Daniel Rodriguez

3 in one day?! Murph get some sleep dude!

Stuart Innes

You love to see it

Savannah M

You spoil us!
