Scene from book one of 'Who Endures'
After the unexpected discovery and rescue of Lenah and Straen, Freyjin was assigned to care for them during the long trek back to Pas'en. It was during this time that Nua informed Freyjin that the burden would be taken from her when they returned to the city, that Nua would have them raised as maids in her estate where they would be safe. Freyjin objects to this as she has bonded with them, but Nua, greatly disliking the fatalistic faith that let Freyjin accept being parted from her first child, tells her she doesn't trust that she would actually protect them.
In short, she tells Freyjin to 'prove it'.
With no other option, Freyjin gets in between her mistress and the two orphans. Compared to Nua, Freyjin is a novice, and takes the thrashing of a lifetime...
Which is proof enough. Nua declares her the victor. Freyjin is allowed to move into the estate, becomes the Majordomo of the house (basically like a prime minister but for household affairs) and oversees the care of the handful of children that fall into Nua's hands.
