I only knew Phoebe before listening to this when it came out and I just have to say how happy I am to know Lucy’s music now. Her voice is at the same time like nothing I’ve ever heard before but also timeless? Reiterating from other comments that I think you’d like her album Home Video and her song Night Shift.

I left this comment on YT, too, but honestly the recording of the EP doesn't do the songs or their voices justice. I know it might not really work for the channel, but the Brooklyn Steel performance is really the one to watch. Their voices together live are incredible, and the way they play Me & My Dog and Salt In the Wound in particular are just SO much better than the recordings. Maybe a Patreon-only reaction to that show? No matter what, you should definitely watch it for yourselves.

They gave Paul Simon a shoutout in the liner notes as an inspiration for "Cool About It." He wasn't given a songwriting credit, though.

My favorite thing about "We're In Love" is that it IS a love song, but Lucy actually wrote it for Phoebe and Julien. It's a song honoring their friendship, and friendship love songs are what keep me going. It resonates with me so hard as someone for whom friendship has always been the most important kind of relationship. The song is both so loving and so devastating—how I interpret it is "I love you so much and we are so tethered to each other that, even if things heartbreakingly don't work out for us in this life, I'd still find you in the next one because I'd know you anywhere and our souls are destined to find each other every time". It's soulmate shit. It breaks me. I think of my best friend of fifteen years and weep and curse Lucy Dacus for making me feel so deeply. LOL

Lucy is my favorite of the 3, I definitely recommend checking her solo stuff out, Historians being my favorite. For Julien I think Little Oblivions is her best, some of her songs here could’ve easily been on it. Also pleaeeee don’t skip on Phoebes first album, that one is full of heartbreak and it’s hard to compare punisher to it. I believe the first EP was essentially what you mentioned at the end, they all brought a few songs they had but either didn’t know how to finish it or production things like that and they helped each other finish, it’s why the song each feel so particular to whoever is the lead. Lastly there is a video on youtube of Lucy singing “we’re in love” that’s just her and a mic in a room w phoebe and friends, such a raw one take but it’s so beautiful, Lucy has a gorgeous voice.

also just a minor trivia thing, but boygenius don't really like being called women and call each other "my boys" or "the boys". you see this in lyrics like "i'll be the boy with the pink carnation" and "not strong enough to be your man" but it's not a super serious thing, they still all go by she/her, it's just a preference.

also pitchfork has the famous 2018 brooklyn steel boygenius show on their channel, just unlisted. it's the show with the performance of Me & My Dog they sample in Letter To An Old Poet. it's here https://www.youtube.com/live/xdOgjtMIo-Y and it's the full show from that night: lucy opening for phoebe, who opened for julien, before all 3 came back out as boygenius. it's a great taste of the solo work/performance style of all 3 along with their 2018 EP together.

julien definitely brought a lot of the upbeat/rocker energy on this album but her solo stuff is almost exclusively gorgeous sad songs, especially on her first two solo albums (Sprained Ankle and Turn Out The Lights). her third album Little Oblivions is more experimental production-wise but her first album is literally her gorgeous sad songs along with her playing guitar and piano and pedals. Turn Out The Lights also has strings via her friend Camille Faulkner and drums via her friend/Forrister bandmate Matt Gilliam. Forrister/The Star Killers is a whole other rabbit hole. Phoebe was also in Sloppy Jane as a bassist and in a country band called Buster, as well as Better Oblivion Community Center with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, and Lucy had a collaboration called Dear Ghosts. Julien is also releasing a country album with TORRES soon! they've also all done lots of features on other artist's songs. my favorite 2 JB features are Bad Things To Such Good People with Manchester Orchestra, and Marionette with Keaton Henson, who has a very similar sparse beautiful style to JB's early solo work. i'm babbling but overall i definitely recommend Julien's solo work, especially Sprained Ankle for more of the gorgeous sparse poetry side, Little Oblivions for more of the experimental production side, and TOTL for a combination of both.

I love this album so much!! One of the core themes of this album is the deep friendship the three of them share and the emotion of that always hits for me

The vinyl version actually has some cool transitions on it, so there are some transitions just not on the streaming version!! Also the last song has a feature where the last few seconds loop until you turn the record player off so it can go forever basically

Also letters to an old poet is a follow up song to the song “me and my dog” from their first ep. It makes sense in that context lmao

Yay! This album only gets better with each listen, especially if you are only familiar with phoebe. They have a “film” that is $20, Emily I’m sorry, and true blue that is wonderful! Also Lucy Dacus’s album Home Video was my favorite album of 2021. It’s full of nostalgia and heartbreak and her best work in my eyes. So glad y’all did this:)

The final song Letter to an Old Poet is an interpolation of a song titled Me and My dog from their EP. It felt like a new perspective on the same situation and shows so much growth from the starting point in me and my dog to the ending of letter to an old poet. I do think letter to an old poet was the closing track because it was something for the longtime fans. Also, in me and my dog Phoebe references her then alive dog Max and in letter to an old poet she pays tribute to Max who has since the first song passed❤️🩹. You should definitely at least give me and my dog a listen but the whole EP is amazing and deserves to be listened to in its whole

You should definitely check out their short film that they made on youtube with the first 3 singles they released (20$-Julien ,Emily i’m sorry - Phoebe , True blue - Lucy) it’s a very artistic take on all 3 of the songs they sing, all shot by kristen stewart it’s really amazing and puts a amazing perspective on the songs glad youse enjoyed the record.
