The door is a coal chute . Back when most people burned coal, the delivery truck would back up to the door, stick a chute through the open door, and the coal would slide down through the opened door to an angled tunnel. Each week the coal trucks delivered the week's fuel through these angled openings. They would dump the coal into a room that was specially designated to hold it, usually in the basement next to the furnace.
