Patreon Will Be Adding Sales Taxes For Some Patrons The Month After Next
Added 2020-05-29 00:10:05 +0000 UTCHey all!
I've gotten an email from Patreon where they announced they will be legally obligated to apply sales taxes to some pledges made on Patreon effective July 1. This all depends on what country you live in, though, as well as what each Patreon creator makes in return for pledges. As you might expect, Patreon is being pretty vague about whether or not you guys will have to pay sales tax as a supporter of my work, since you're receiving bonus images/polls rather than goods or services.
Click here for the list of countries this will apply to and how much will be added in tax. In many cases the sales tax won't be much more than 10%.
Here's the full page detailing the new sales tax policy.
The sales taxes will take effect July 1, so the month of June is still sales-tax free.
Here's why I say Patreon's being vague about whether the taxes will apply to my Patreon tiers. Their announcement says: " Whether or not a patron pays sales tax depends on (...) what you offer in your tiers," but doesn't specify what the variables are. From what I gather, it will differ widely based on your country/state. However there's also a lot of language saying things like " Within the US, we estimate that less than half of all patrons will have sales tax added to their pledge," and "many patrons wont see any sales tax added to their pledge at all."
So yeah, kinda lame but in most cases you won't see yourself paying more than a few cents even if you do get taxed. And again, this is effective July 1, so nothing's gonna happen for at least a month.
Patreon will be sending out an email to the non-creator accounts at the start of next month which will hopefully be more detailed. Hopefully this doesn't put you off too much. I don't have any control over it ^^; Thanks for understanding!
