Level 6 - 1 - Dungeon of the Mad Mage (All Tiers)

The descent in the Undermountain continues! It feels good to finally get a map out (I've had a lot going on if you are out of the loop, check out my most recent update here - which also contains what's coming in the next month or two as it's a little different than normal).

The Lost Level...the Temple of Dumathoin...the...level full of Arch Gates?  Seriously, it's half mapped and I think there's been 6 already.

Map Notes. The map sizes ended up a little wonky on this one - but as it wouldn't all fit very well on one map, I did my best (as always) to split it in logical and clean areas to minimize DM back and forth between maps.

This release spans Maps A & B - with Maps C & D coming in a month or so.  The full layout is shown here:

Mapping wise, nothing too crazy to note. This level was a little bare - mostly picked over by the duergar who have set up camp on it.  The one omission to note (which I've actually done a few times now) is no corpses - it's one of those things that can easily be changed in a level to fit a narrative of your own making so I don't like to set that in the image - ie. maybe some other faction other than Duergar have taken over YOUR Level 6, so I don't want to include a dead duergar in the image.  I'd suggest using a 'dead' token in it's place.

Foundry / dd2vtt file users, be aware none of the pillars have 'block light' (ie. walls) turned on to allow the glow to come off them properly.  Also note that Area 19 generated some wonky walls (mostly duplicates) for me when I imported it into Foundry using Universal Battlemap Importer, so that will need a few seconds of clean up to delete the extra walls.

Files. I have included both Background "_BG_" and Transparent "_TP_" versions of each of the maps listed above; background means it has a flat grey image behind the dungeon, transparent means there is nothing there. For the Roll20 versions, this means the background version is a jpg while the transparent version is a png (jpgs don't support transparency); Foundry are both dd2vtt files. IF you want to puzzle piece the sections together like above (NOT RECOMMENDED), you have the transparent versions available for that. However, if you set up each map to an individual scene, you could use either, but the _BG_ jpgs will meet the file size limits for Roll20 (TP pngs may not!).

The zip files below have the Level 6 Maps A and B, as well as a GM overlay for each map. Roll20Free is a .jpg < 5MB, Roll20Paid is a .jpg < 10MB, while Foundry formats are dd2vtt files. Roll20 maps are at 70 and 140 px per grid cell respectively and the Foundry files are 100px (this also holds true for the transparent images).

Fair enough, I didn't know it wasn't officially supported, and that alone is enough reason to not complicate things. I haven't ran into any issues yet, and really love that I can use webp to put an entire floor on one roll20 map (although I do occasionally downress your maps on top of using webp)

I have looked into webp - both 6 months ago when I was starting DOTMM and again just now. Webp doesn't show as being officially supported in Roll20, and I came across a few (recent) forum posts about webp breaking on reload into the editor on R20. I appreciate the suggestion, and I would absolutely love if webp was properly supported in R20 - would have used it from the beginning! Until it's more officially supported though I probably won't release my files in the format - I'd hate to have someone come across a bug that causes my map not to load right before a session. I'm curious - sounds like you are using it though? No issues for you so far?

Hey Dude, first off, glad to see you're back! If my party wasn't the exploring-every-inch-of-the-map-twice-sort I'd have had to return to the crappy default maps the book provides, can't have that :D secondly, have you looked into .webp images? It's a new(ish) filetype built by Google that's more efficient then jpg, AND supports transparancy. Idk about other tools but it works in roll20. If you're interested, there's an online converter called Squoosh, which I found really helpfull in checking out the filetype.

Funny you should mention it - I am hoping to eventually get to this. I was planning to run some players through some of the Tales of the Yawning Portal (but reworked to fit a campaign narrative). If the group eventually gets there I'd plan to release the by the book versions
