Mallrats (1995) Full Length Reaction

** Watched version of movie with runtime: 1:35:13

Ok it's the next installment of the View Askewniverse and in this one we're hanging with the cool kids at the mall! I definitely noticed the higher budget but it's interesting to me that this one didn't do as well as Clerks right out of the gate, or so I've heard. I'm very curious to keep going with the series, so Chasing Amy -- shall we give it a go next?

Mallrats (1995) Full Length Reaction

Seeing this one kinda makes me sad. Back when I was first watching this one (around the time it came out) we lived within walking distance of two malls. The "good mall" and the "dirt mall". The "good mall" was highscale with big box stores and a few niche ones like San Francisco and also had escalators. The "dirt mall" had the comic store and a pretty good library. Unfortunately, the comic store moved further downtown and the restaurant for their food court closed so it just became a sitting area to look over the lake. There's a mall where I live now but it's 90% clothing stores and no escalator.

I have an electrical worker named Walter that I'll frequently early in the day, it'll be all quiet just pulling cable or something and out of nowhere I start with "my cousin walter"....then make up some story along the lines of this movie...and he says something along the lines of "it wasn't a gerbil, it was a hamster"... 🤣🤣🤣 We frequently quote Kevin Smith movies on job sites. so glad we don't have people that run to HR about it.

I don't think anyone else has pointed out that T.S. picks up and puts on a "Clerks" hat while they are in the "dirt mall". There were plenty of other tie-ins I only learned about from reading other's comments. I think I've only seen Chasing Amy once and I don't remember being super into it, but I'd watch along to give it another shot. I remember it was a very different than other ViewAskewniverse movies. I'm really looking forward to the rest though! I watched Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back on TV as a teenager and only later watched the other movies, Mallrats being one of my favorites. Glad you chose the theatrical version, at least for a first watch. From what I remember the longer cut adds a lot in runtime but somehow takes away overall.

I haven't seen Dazed & Confused yet!

You might have thought you recognised T.S from Dazed & Confused—which didn't actually feature the same actor but his identical twin brother, Jason London

I believe the conversation about Superman's supersperm was the origin of the phrase 'blowing her back out'

Trigger

Absolutely NO to "Chasing Amy..." said no one ever. Great job, Jen!

Ouch. Watching these sex and romance movies always brings me down. I made it through most of this one through. I'm looking forward to Vertigo!

Connections between Clerks and Mallrats Julie Dwyer the girl who died in the pool. Her funeral is the one Dante and Randall go to in Clerks. Rick Derris was in Clerks and in Mallrats is mentioned as the guy who had sex with the bandit on the pool table. Randall (Clerks) and Brodie each mention a Cousin Walt. Also I am sure u noticed Gil Hicks and played by the same actor who played Dante in Clerks. Star Wars references in both movies. La Fours is a tribute to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. The main and feared Lawman pursuing them is name LaFours and is known for wearing a skimmer hat
