The Cannonball Run (1981) Full Length Reaction

Great reaction, this has always been in my top 10 80's comedies. I was so happy to see your reaction to Roger Moore. I definitely miss your Bond reactions.

Chris Green

Fun movie with lots of celebrities. Most important to me is the theme song by Chuck Mangione. I'm a huge Chuck fan. You should listen to some of his music, I'm sure you will appreciate it. His compositions range from a quintet to a full orchestra.

Joe 42n

Such a great movie! The outtakes at the end were the best. FYI, the Cannonball Run was an actual illegal road race that gained infamy in the 1970's. It ran from New York to LA. The record now stands at 29 hours and 39 minutes. It was set in 2020 during the COVID lockdowns when there were few people on the roads across the country. It's unlikely it will ever be beaten because of that.

John

Just watched this. What an amazing reaction, Jen. I had a blast. And please, yes to Cannonball Run 2. I loved these movies when I was a kid. Still do.

I actually loved the sequel and prefer it to the original.

That was a laugh riot and a fab reaction! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Thank you for selecting. I'm delighted you loved it so much. Especially so regarding the Moore/Bond parts. πŸ’œ You noticed the woman he was rolling with changed about 4 babes in. πŸ”«πŸ˜…πŸ‘ I'd guess that Moore / meta-Bond was your fave character. I thought it was a good show of Moore to poke fun at himself in this so much. Especially as the Bond movies with him were still ongoing... with 'For Your Eyes Only' being released just one week after Cannonball Run. Dean Martin looked soaking drunk throughout the entire film. πŸ™„ Farrah Fawcett was one of the original 1970s Charlie's Angels. RIP Farrah. ❀ All the 'Him' lines from Dom DeLuise. πŸ˜… You may know Dom DeLuise's voice from several animated children's films. From Wiki; DeLuise also lent his distinctive voice to various animated films and was a particular staple of Don Bluth's features, playing major roles in The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, A Troll in Central Park and All Dogs Go to Heaven (also with Reynolds). DeLuise also voiced the incarnation of Charles Dickens' Fagin in the Walt Disney film Oliver & Company. RIP Dom. ❀ Cannonball Run was a massive hit. Total box office take was US$160 million. Budget was US$16-18 million. From Wiki; Box office - A huge commercial success, The Cannonball Run opened June 19, 1981 on 1,673 screens and grossed $11,765,574 in its opening weekend, the fourth highest opening of all time, but this was not enough to beat Superman II that opened the same weekend with a record-breaking $14,100,523. The film went on to gross $72,179,579 in the United States and Canada, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 1981, behind Raiders of the Lost Ark, On Golden Pond, Superman II, Arthur, and Stripes. I don't think the sequel is well regarded at all, I'd add it to my 'to watch' list if you put it up. You'd probably be better just watching it yourself on downtime. The Cannonball Run - Opening theme song www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqWyI8CTzzA Further Burt Reynolds ; Deliverance (gripping, tense, brutal wilderness survival / cat & mouse death hunt) Boogie Nights (it has Scorsese-level excellence in style, drama) Dir by Paul Thomas Anderson. City Heat (not his best, or worst, but it's fun to see him team up with Eastwood.) RIP Burt. Wow, big congratulations on your orchestra winning regional award for The Lawrence of Arabia theme! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh1b_emCjkk

as soon as that Lamborgini V12 came on i had the biggest shit-eating grin on my face and was singing along like i was back being about 8 years old.. forgot how good this was... Edit: fun fact.. Jackie Chan started doing outtakes during the credits after seeing it done here, i believe

Thanks for this one. I remember watching it so many times when I was younger on VHS and HBO. Always cracked up! 🀣

It is all about the journey, not the destination!

For Burt Reynolds, I'll add a vote for "Smokey and the Bandit" - car action and funny! "Hooper" - more car stunts, less crime. "The Longest Yard" - Burt in prison, and football! The whole ending of "Cannonball Run" is silly, because of the staggered start times. A slightly more serious (emphasis slightly) view of the same race is "Gumball Rally".

Lost1Sole

I watched this so many times as a kid with my Dad. I think he loved it mostly for the guy playing the Doc(Jack Elam), who was a legendary actor in Western films. Dom DeLuise is my fave. He's a sweetheart. Love all the 80s cars(especially that slant nosed brown Porsche at the start) and I would actually love to do the actual Cannonball/Gumball Rally.

Patrick

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Rat Race, and even Deathrace 2000 are all extremely similar comedic, ensemble cast race movies. Also you may someday want to watch a Michael Hui movie, the dude who played the Japanese computer genius that spoke Cantonese the entire movie. He's mostly unknown among westerners, but he had a string of hit comedies in the seventies and eighties. Jackie Chan has a huge amount of films to choose from. His best flicks are Drunken Master 2 and Police Story imo. Rumble in the Bronx followed by the immensely successful Rush Hour were what made him a star in the west - although both films were made after he had already finished his series of truly iconic films.

Cannonball Run 2 has a lot of big stars too Jen. It would be a fun watch. The show Roger Moore refers to in this movie as he's driving is The Saint. It was a UK show in during the 1960's led him to eventually be the next Bond after Connery quit.

Geoff S.

The Cannonball was an actual race run for a few years starting in the early 70's as way to protest the new 55 mile an hour speed limit. I think people tried running it during Covid when everyone was off the roads.

Geoff S.

Fav character? I would place my first bet on Seymour Goldfarb Jr. But Victor may be another possibility. Fun fact: allegedly, Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli wasn’t too pleased with this movie. Moore took the role on his own, and the production didn’t seek permission either. That’s why Seymour believes he is Roger Moore and not James Bond, to avoid potential legal trouble. However, Moore had a good relationship with Broccoli, and after assuring him he wouldn’t do anything like that again, things were smoothed over. But there are also rumors that this incident led to a contract change, preventing Bond actors from playing Bond-like characters in non-Bond films without explicit approval from EON.

Thank you again for posting the link to the movie! My face hurt at the end from grinning so much. I grew up watching the legendary Cannonball Run 2, but I never saw this original. I was only 9 when this came out, so I don't know the road laws back then but, no, it was illegal to be drinking and driving in most if not all states even during that time. It really became federally enforced in the late 80's. New York criminalized it in 1910 and Arizona passed the first official DUI law in 1950. About halfway through, I noticed Moore having a different girl in the car every scene, and i thought it was a nice Bond throwback touch! 🀣 I've always been a Lamborghini fan, so I was team Black Lambo for two obvious reasons. πŸ€£πŸ˜‰

I can recite that movie nearly word for word. Glad you enjoyed it!

Mike Hart

The women won (only ones shown clocking-in at the end). When this movie came out was exactly when the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) campaign started to become a thing. I was hit that year (1981) by a drunk driver who was not even charged with that offense - a year or two later and for sure he would have been. Also, Roger Moore had at least 5 different women in his car at my count :-)

Drew

Oh no.... 😟 movie set injuries suck!

Over50Gamer

Yup, right reasons. The movie was produced by Golden Harvest (a well known Hong Kong film producing company). Usually their films are released/re-released on a limited basis outside of HK and the reason why Jackie Chan is in it.

You mentioned you need to see Godzilla yes please, I recommend starting with original Godzilla 1954, then the 2014 US version, then Minus One 2023 (which is the best) you could obviously watch more of the OG ones and the US sequels as well but I'd save Minus One so your not just watching the best one first, I also have a guilty pleasure for the 1998 version but I know lots of people hate that movie πŸ˜‚ I think its a lot of fun, thanks Jen ❀

Matt

Very good point John.

Clay F

Holy.... you're a gem, Jen

Over50Gamer

I remember wanting to rent that as a kid just because it had a Lamborghini on the cover. If you grew up in the early 90s, Lamborginis were the coolest cars EVER. I might need to revisit it soon because the cast is pretty damn stacked. Lots of SCTV folks.

Joe Blankenship

Fact: The scene where the Aston Martin spins out resulted in an injury to the stunt woman in the car. She wound up being paralyzed and she sued production because the car was not up to par with maintenance.

Just updated with a link to free version on Internet Archive

Can't find this anywhere for streaming and I no longer do the torrent thing (ex-pirate). Ugh! I imagine there's some kind of rights dispute behind it.

Over50Gamer

Me too πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ

Matt

OH amazing!! Thanks, I'll put a link to it!!

Jen M

And it's worth mentioning it was second to Star Wars. Any other year, it would have been #1.

John

i found it on internet archive for free

zynjams

The 2 sequels are fun. The third movie is called speed zone and has John Candy in it

Brad Shelton

Smokey and the Bandit (1977) starring Burt Reynolds was part of our pop culture. Avoid Cannonball Run II at all costs. Smokey and the Bandit was a box office success, grossing $127 million against a $4.3 million budget, becoming the second-highest-grossing domestic film of 1977 in the US.

Clay F

Yesssss, checking it out right now!! Love the sequel, but you have to watch Smokey and the Bandit first!! πŸ˜†πŸ˜†. Also, Jackie Chan got the idea of putting outtakes at the end of all his movies because of this!
