I remember this when it first aired, I was a college sophomore. This was a brainscrambling/what the frig episode. I remember seeing the promo during the week it aired and decided to stay home and watch it instead of recording it like I usually did; Saturdays at 5.

Don't worry, Jen. I watched this when it first aired. 30 years later, I still haven't unpacked this episode. 😄

Dante Hopkins

I think everything from the very start is all in his head. Worf cutting him with the knife is his subconscious inventing something based on the real life wound he has (from medical apparatus connected to that part of his face in reality). And he "met" the genuine alien in the corridor, that was clearly part of his dream.

George Foot

A big clue that Riker's experience on the Enterprise was not what as it seems happened when Chief O'Brien's voice was heard from the transporter room, when, by this time the Chief had long since transferred to DS9.

Mark Chrisco

I love this episode, no wasted scenes start to finish. Excellent acting!

Anthony Picard

Jonathan Frakes' acting in this episode was above and beyond. He kinda internalized his shipmates they became like inner helpers they kept him grounded in reality.

RSK1995

The acting and musical episodes are always the worst. Whenever they go away from Treking the Stars the show suffers for it.

Jason Weiner

This was one of bottle episodes to save money, like a filler episode.

Bobby Coolbreeze

the 1st time i watch this episode it gave me a headache

Poor Riker. As far as I can recall, this is the EIGHTH time his mind has been messed with in an episode. The first was when he was forced to relive traumatic memories in Shades of Gray. The second was when an alien kid messed with his sense of reality in Future Imperfect. The third was when he imagined that his bed was full of snakes in Night Terrors. The fourth was when an alien symbiont took over his consciousness in The Host. The fifth was when his mind was taken over in The Game. The sixth was when his memory was wiped in Conundrum. The seventh was when he had to work with other crew members to reconstruct elements of alien abductions they had all forgotten in Schisms. On top of all of that, this is the second time he's suffered a bad outcome while on a solo mission to an alien world (the first was in First Contact).

This was one of the only episodes that my dad wouldn't let me watch as a kid

"Frame of Mind" isn't one of my absolute top TNG episodes, but damn, I really like it. It's not your typical Star Trek episode—it's darker, more psychological, almost horror, and I love that. Jonathan Frakes absolutely kills it as Riker in this one—his performance is intense, raw, and that "Let me out of here!" scene? Chills. I was lucky enough to meet him and Marina Sirtis together at a convention in my area years ago, and let me tell you, they were both incredible people. Such an honor. This episode really messes with your head in the best way. Lol. Glad you enjoy it too—your reactions are always a blast to watch! 😊

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

A strange one indeed , not knowing what's real and what isn't is all part of the experience of an episode like this . I wasn't disturbed or freaked out personally but get why some are . I'm just here for the awesome reactions and Jen's wonderful commentary . Hence I rarely have anything interesting to say . Great thumbnail though 🔥🙂

Ian

An unsettling fave, I think you will like next week’s

Harmony through Time

I’ll be honest, I used to get Frame of Mind and Future Imperfect confused all the time. Not only are Riker-centric episodes that deal with his reality but they both start with F! For Frakes! 😂

Julian San

Well, I've heard that doctors, I don't know how many comparatively, typically have a very morbid and twisted sense of humor and imagination that they tap into to cope with the stress of the job. I believe Troi that it is healthy to tap into the darker side of the psyche (not too much, tho 😉)

This episode is one of the best and most memorable I've ever seen in Trek history. Very unnerving, and wonderfully written by Brannon Braga, this one felt like Star Trek meets The Outer Limits (another favorite show). I wish I could see more of Jonathan Frakes' acting roles during the time and outside of Trek, because he was amazing in this! And yeah, they did a great job with the music; it really helped drive the overall darker, crazier tone of the story.

I think this episode is probably the closest to a genuine horror type, definitely creepy, and not a favorite, but it did what it wanted to do, I guess

Sarah

Yeah this one's freaky and disturbing! I guess I think ALL of it is in Riker's mind until he wakes up on the table at the end. But it's all recent memories - things that really happened but just a more and more scrambled version of those events. He did a great job in this one, agreed. Beverly, you write some messed up stuff! What's going on with you? x)

Banes

I remember it from back in the day. Although Johnathon Frakes gave an excellent performance throughout, This episode had me disturbed. I didn't like feeling disturbed.

Gregory Forster, Jr.

I predict Jen that you will love this one, and it will freak you out a bit.

jon bolton

Random fact - this episode is based on the silent film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. (Unless they are just coincidentally VERY similar.)

Kevin Sommerfield

You're episode description is epic! Can't wait to watch this one with you.

Geoff S.

Def a weird episode! 😆
