Deep Blue Sea (1999) Full Length Reaction

Comments

I finally got around to renting this one so I could watch it with your reaction! I've seen parts of this movie via those "best scenes" clips on YT, but i never watched it fully. One thing that really saddened me was the parrot getting eaten. I have a soft spot for birds ever since owning my own parrot, so, yeah... πŸ™ Also, I was hoping for the blonde to survive her husband, not have to join him just moments later. I mentioned it on your YT edit earlier today, but one deep water movie that scared and shocked me was Deep Rising. It's a ridiculous movie bordering on dark comedy, but it also has some scary and unsettling moments. I think it was intended to be a precursor to a King Kong reboot, but the movie was a failure in theaters. It's since gained a cult following.

Paul = ditto. And what was sad, it was the first movie that me and wife went to in 2 years (after our daughter being born -- we dropped her with a church babysitting service -- her first time with a babysitter). A big night, but then to walk out of a bad movie. Sorry Lorenzo, just my opinion. I chimed in here in b/c I remember that experience so well. Sphere (1998) (IMDb 6.1, Metacritic 35%, RT 13%, RT Audience 38%)I.

Clay F

Yeah, Sphere was made to cash in on the Michael Crichton popularity after Jurassic Park. The novel Sphere is excellent, the movie, not so much.

Paul Sophocleous

Two true life dramas on the high seas. The Perfect Storm (2000) starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Diane Lane. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, NeverEnding Story) and a true weather catastrophe on the high seas. The second is The Finest Hours (2016) about true story in 1952 of the greatest attempted small boat rescue in the history of the US Coast Guard. Incredible bravery depicted and great cast starring Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. "They say you have to go out. They don't say you have to come back". Ethos of the Coast Guard. Two riveting stories of life and death on the high seas.

Summer 1999 - Canoeing Vacation in Michigan. We were supposed to spend 5 days and 4 nights camping & canoeing. But on Day 3, my Uncle messed up and parked the cars about 2-3 hours Further Down River than he was supposed to πŸ˜‚. This meant that we just BARELY Managed to get out of the River before the Sunset and we were all exhausted. Instead of canoeing another day, we decided to break camp and head to a hotel...which just so happened to be near a theater oc. So I decided to go a buy a ticket for whatever PG-13 movie was out and then snuck into Deep Blue Sea. That is the entire story. πŸ˜‚ Boring I know.

TheADHDOverlord

To each their own, but Sphere is one of 2 movies I walked out of the theater without finishing. I see on IMDB similar reviews. I liked the book well enough but Sphere the movie is not something I will ever watch willingly again.

Paul Patine

Another good good scary ocean movie is "Sphere" from 1998. It also stars Samuel L Jackson but is a VERY different. film

Lorenzo Turner

Rogue, Blackwater are good killer animal films.

Adam Stroud

I forgot Samuel L Jackson was in it πŸ˜†

Carlos Perez

you almost swore! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

TheADHDOverlord

I almost spit out my drink when you said 'Imagine if he just shoots the guy.' holy shit lol

Jack O

I will tell my story of sneaking into this movie when I was 16 after I finish the watch along (i know everyone wants to hear it πŸ˜‚)

TheADHDOverlord

"Can shark jumps out of the water"? Yes, some (including the Great White) are known to breach. Many reasons have been hypothesized: sometimes it's part of their hunting strategy (you'll see them launch themselves at things like seals), other times it seems more for hygiene reasons. The impact of the water when they smack back down can dislodge stuff (including parasites and bigger things like remoras) that are attached to them.

Alexis

+1 for Life Aquatic. It kinda parodies Jacques Cousteau and has some amazing visual effects along with quite the star-studded cast.

Alexis

If you want a more comedic ocean film "Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" A classic war film set at sea would be "Das Boot". Also Deep Rising is peak 90's cheese as well.

To reiterate some of the fun films already mentioned: * Underwater (2020) - really felt the claustrophobia with this one! * Deep Star Six (1989) * Leviathan (1989) * Deep Rising (1998) One more that hasn’t been pointed out yet that you might enjoy: * The Deep (1977) - great underwater treasure hunting saga with Nick Nolte, Jacqueline Bisset, Robert Shaw, and Louis Gossett Jr. No humongous creatures in this one per se - just bad guy drug smugglers, some treasure sleuthing and a slightly large moray eel. Directed by Peter Yates (Bullitt, Breaking Away, Year of the Comet) from a Peter Benchley (Jaws) novel. Pretty good.

Major Peril

Some other fun deep water films from the late 80s DeepStar Six (1989) and Leviathan (1989). Highly recommend.

DM DC

A complete B-movie romp. Big, hilarious, brainless, dumb and goofy. Tremors had people coming up with clever solutions when faced with underground monsters. Jurassic Park had some smarts about its criticisms regarding the dangers of genetics. In DBS it's just people being idiots and the message is simply "genetic manipulation = BAD!" πŸ˜„ The best creature feature of "recent" years is still Piranha 3D (2010). It might be even more brainless and stupid than DBS, but it absolutely knows this, and leans into how ridiculous it is.

Opti_Frog

Nice one :) This one is my "guilty pleasure" flick :) For more shark fobia, maybe "47 Meters Down" (2017) keep it up :)

Lean

One of my favorites. And you know it's a good ride when Jen's "frick" filter misfires. πŸ˜‚

Thomas Yanez

4k Arrow just arrived today so this was perfect timing. The CGI sharks haven't aged well but the mechanical sharks still look incredible. Great score, too. I'd give the mvp to Carter, though.

thansen

The audio commentary is amazing

Justin Bartlett

Just in time for me to watch the Arrow Video 4K blu-ray release! I saw this in theaters and remember it soooo vividly.

djKENTO

All those already mentioned, plus Deep Star Six and Gray Lady Down (about a disabled submarine).

Rob Nichols

Ooh yesss. This is one of my favourites and I agree LL Cool J was definitely the MVP in this.

Dylan

Yessss, im ready 🦜! You can probably check out Deep Rising, Daylight, Piranha, Leviathan. 😁 but NOT Speed 2....unless you really want to πŸ˜†

Carlos Perez

Haven't seen this before but looks fun so I'm looking forward to checking it out, thanks Jen 🦈😲

Matt

Classic Creature From the a Black Lagoon might be a start. There’s also Piranha from 1972. There’s also Gargoyles which scared the hell out of me as a kid. It’s a must see.
