🖖Star Trek DS9 S01E11 Full Length Reaction

Comments

Ferengi are ultra-capitalists. Their government manages contracts but is basically a large corporation or regulatory body. Society is geared around GDP/profit as the measure of all value, so social goods are those that work for profit; it's hyper-individualistic. Technologically, they are "roughly equal to the federation," but they represent our modern capitalist society as an alternative to the model of the Federation.

Castanea

You’re right!

Anthony Picard

One reason Odo doesn’t do more shapeshifting is that it was expensive as the CGI was still very new.

Anthony Picard

Oh you're one of THOSE Trek people. /smh

BJ Stephens

Just sad. DS9 is hands down the best Trek series. Let the other series battle for 2nd. The characters make the difference. Even 2nd tier characters on DS( have more development and interesting arcs than most main characters of all the other series. SMH.

SteelPookie

The alien guy Quark is telling the joke to just before the Nagus turns up is Morn. Keep your eyes out for him. He's DS9's version of Norm from Cheers. He pops up in the background all the time. The Ferengi Gral was played by Lee Arenberg, who is well known for playing Pintel in Pirates of the Caribbean. Also, Krax, the Nagus' son, has also appeared as a different Ferengi in TNG. He played Solok in Chain of Command part 1. That thing that Quark was holding was a Corvan Gilvo. It's an endangered animal. We previously saw the Enterpise D carrying some to Brentalia in the TNG epiosde "New Ground" (the one where Worf had to rescue Alexander from the fire).

Paul Sophocleous

There is a bit of crossover, but not that much. Still, you would be able to keep the same schedule that you have now, with alternating between the episodes. Voyager also has much more of a TNG vibe to it, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Paul Sophocleous

Been too long since I watched this one so much laid out for arcs so early, great watching with you Jen

Harmony through Time

Telling the Ferengi apart will get easier it was exciting to see Wallace Shawn he played a ferengi well, your devotion to the music is inspiring, not sure O’Brien sells intimidating school teacher

Harmony through Time

Nice profile picture. He means to say "Avery Brooks seems like it's his first day at his improv class."

Listening Man

Yay Emmisary dropped on YouTube!! Funny watching them all make the same comments we made about Trills, Ro/Kira etc

Brett Whittaker

I can only speak for myself but Voyager is the weakest of the three and while it has great episodes I think most people would not want DS9 to be shared with Voyager and hence delayed in its run but would prefer all out DS9 after TNG. Then when DS9 is finished by all means Voyager could then be done. And another show waiting in the wings I also think we would love to see is Doctor Who.

Andrew Roach

The scene in Quarks office where hes petting the small animal at his desk is a direct copy of the opening of 'the godfather'...also the large alien in the bar that Quark is telling a joke to is in almost every scene in the bar. He's called Morn and is a nod to Norm fom the series Cheers.

Voyager premiered in 1995, a year after TNG ended in 1994 and right after the first TNG movie. That was around the time DS9 was entering its third season. Technically, Voyager does have a crossover with DS9, but it's mostly tied to TNG—I won't spoil it for you, though. Hopefully, once you finish TNG, you can keep up your weekly reactions with DS9 and add Voyager to the mix. DS9 and Voyager ran side by side from 1995 to 1999, with the TNG movies happening in between. DS9 wrapped up in 1999, while Voyager continued until 2001, the same year Enterprise premiered. I can pretty much guarantee Voyager will grab your interest—TNG, DS9, and Voyager represent some of the best of Star Trek's Roddenberry/Berman era in the 90s. By the time you reach the Alex Kurtzman/streaming era of Trek, you'll find the shows are a lot shorter—typically 10 episodes per season, except for two of them, which have a few extra. If you're still interested in continuing after Voyager and Enterprise and they fit into your schedule, that'd be awesome—but if not, that's totally fine. I'm not expecting you to watch everything, even though it's all connected and canon. There is surely a lot of Trek content. Lol For now, I'm just happy you're continuing with TNG and DS9.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Love the Sisko and Jake relationship. Love the Jake and Nog friendship! Some fans continue not to like the Ferengi and their episodes. I like them personally. Armin Shimerman, who plays Quark, is a great actor. I love that over the top laugh at his brother wanting to take over the bar. xD

Banes

"Sisco seems like a 1st day of improve wannabe. " What exactly does this mean?

Ortizmo

Keep in mind that at the beginning of TNG, the Ferengi were supposed to be the new bad guy (to replace the Klingons from TOS. Roddenberry wanted TNG to kind of "start from scratch" and not use a lot of the TOS races). Remember in the TNG Pilot episode, Picard makes a comment about the people of Farpoint being "as tasty to the Ferengi as some of their other associates" (Or something to that effect) They then turned them into a badly exaggerated caricature of "Capitalism gone wild." This resulted in them looking so silly that the idea of them being some kind of "big bad alien adversary" became too comical for them to use. Armin Shimmerman (who plays Quark) actually played one of the first Ferengi that we saw on screen. He is part of the reason (both through playing Quark and certain lobbying on his part with the writers and producers throughout the seasons of DS9) that the Ferengi were seen in a bit more of a sympathetic eye throughout DS9.

Chris Biebel

Bajoran fire caves... hmm, sounds like something that might come up again later. You never know... Nog has an incredible arc across the series, and I think you'll really enjoying seeing where it takes him. Same for Rom. Even Quark gets some growth and development. I think they limited Odo's shapeshifting because it probably cost a lot to do the effects for it and they only had so much in their budget that they could work with. But don't worry, you'll see plenty of his abilities throughout the series.

Slate

Roms arc is pretty good too.

Kevin Morris

You figured out who was under all that Nagus make-up? Inconceivable!

John DiGiantomasso

I didn't see it yet in the comments, but you got it right. The Grand Nagus was played by Wallace Shawn, who is best remembered as Vizzini from The Princess Bride.

Zapp Rowsdower

Remember to look at the request site and vote on what you want Jen to react to things are added often

Harmony through Time

if I remember TNG finish and then voyager started the season. After. so voyager was the beginning of season 3 of DS9 and After the 1st TNG movie

john reed

The Nagus is sort of the Ferengi Pope, President, King and CEO all at the same time. He's the figurehead and ultimate authority within the Ferengi Alliance on all matters.

Laura Thornley

It will depend how much interest there is and what my schedule is like at that time. I believe it wouldn't start until after TNG finishes and into season 3 of DS9 so it will be at least end of 2025 to decide. I have also heard there is not much crossover with DS9 so doesn't necessarily need to be watched in airdate order

Jen M

do you also plan to react to voyager ? as its in this whole tng ds9 voyager mix together

Florian Hoyer

One of the reasons I really enjoy DS9 is that we we start up flesh out some of the species we've met so far, in this case the Ferengi

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

It's pretty widely regarded as one of the best, if not THE best, Trek show. Not sure what you're on about. S1 might not be perfect but TNGs first season is pretty damn rough as well.

Listening Man

I think they're just better at not getting screwed over, and they know that cheating another Ferengi is harder work than cheating a more gullible species

George Foot

nog and quark have pretty good story ark, hope you stick with it to see it.

Brian Sartini

Really bums me out that they call this Star Trek. These characters are terrible and uninteresting. Definitely don't care about the kids, the Ferengi, the doctor is the living embodiment of cringe and Sisco seems like a 1st day of improve wannabe. Time to cleanse the palate with TNG!

Jason Weiner

I was curious if this episode might start softening the Ferengi animosity TNG left in Jen, and judging by the entertaining reaction, I'd like to think it did. Having seen DS9 first, encountering the Ferengi in TNG later was quite a shock for me. They really didn't know what to do with them in that show.

Gábor Árki

I always used to imagine the theme music was the anthem of Bajor.

phillip giroux

No spoilers, but I think Nog grows into one of the best supporting characters in all of Star Trek. RIP Aron Eisenberg.

phillip giroux

I like this episode. Agree that it heartwarming Jake teaching Nog to read. Jake is a good kid.

Clay F

we need to buy Jen copy of the rules of acquisition

john reed

Best thumbnail yet.

Lemurian Jones

In my view part of what makes DS9 so great is all the supporting cast. The main casts of all the shows are great, but only DS9 has such a rich array of recurring minor characters who all get their chance to develop and shine.

Phil Kelly

I was wondering if you were going to notice Wallace Shawn in the opening credits, but then you picked up on him so fast! He's got a really distinctive voice.

Phil Kelly

I love how I can tell I've got the videos synced when your humming matches the theme tune!

Phil Kelly

Now we come to the start of Ferengi culture with The Rules Of Acquisition! Just as entertaining and useful as Lefler's Laws and not as breakable as the Prime Directive seems to be! 🤣 Just wanted to say that I watched four of your reactions today and now I'll probably need more insulin to handle the sweetness overload.

Over50Gamer

DS9 has been said to have been the series that saved the Ferengi from being a mediocre, throwaway race. They're not my favorites, but I'm glad to see their culture more fleshed-out over time and given some complexity, and even redeemable qualities.

Over50Gamer

I love how the board behind Obrian in the classroom has several alien species encountered in The Old Series.

Zork

Sisko being a great dad is one of the best things in the series that helped make DS9 great, when I first saw these almost 11 years ago I watched season one on DVD in a little more than a day so its hard to remember when I decided I liked it but it was between episode 10 and 17 with a few good before and after, it is impressive the character one can see in Nog

Harmony through Time

Before DS9 I was no fan of the Ferengi but Jake helped in this eposode

Harmony through Time

That little pet that Quark had looked a little like the puppet thing that Alexander saved from the school room when it caught fire. Or that rare animal in The Most Toys that Data was playing with.

Geoff S.

The ferengi are less likely to screw each other over, but not by much

William Rosmer

I think it's interesting how O'brien and Sisko look at the Jake/Nog friendship and only see how Nog could be a bad influence on Jake, instead of how Jake could be an good influence on Nog. Maybe it's just a parent worrying about their child more than trusting them. Interesting to think about.

BJ Stephens

I think this episode's only real flaw is that its the second one in a row that features a scene of Quark begging. Beyond that, I've always loved the line "And you failed. Miserably!" Wallace Shawn has such a fun way of delivering multisyllabic words.

Sykonee

The evolution of both Ferengi characters and culture on the show is one of DS9s many highlights.

nigel valentine

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #6 “Never allow family to stand in the way of opportunity.” LOL

Lee R.

Yes, the nagus is played by Wallace Shawn who play Vizzini in The Princess Bride. Urgh, not my favorite episode...not really into the nagus or nagus centric episodes. I don't think we're supposed to love the ferengi, but they are unapologetic, and that is refreshing. No one is ashamed or apologizes for who/what they are in this series.

Kristin D

Not everyone likes the Ferengi episodes (and there's one in particular I personally dislike) but I think overall DS9 did a good job turning the wannabe villains that no one took seriously from TNG into a fairly well-developed culture with extensive lore. They're still pretty much caricatures, kind of ridiculous and often played for comic relief, but there's also going to be meaningful and endearing moments, like the one with Nog.

Kat

The humming is coming along nicely, J!👍 I don't think this qualifies as spoilery and I don't think I've seen anyone else mention it, as much as you're in tune with the music and audio also keep an eye on the opening visuals as the seasons roll by. It's much more... dynamic...than TNG.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

you made it back from the pib sector just in time. your skit was the best btw.
