Unbreakable (2000) Full Length Reaction

This one is so cool! Though I have no idea what genre Collection to put it in - it's "superhero" meets mystery meets thriller - but the fact all the genres are so muddled is what I liked best about it. I heard there are 2 other movies that come after this one, any interest in those?

Unbreakable (2000) Full Length Reaction

What's CRAZY interesting for me is that this movie and Split have both basic concepts that I had thought of as a kid. When Elijah told David his theory, I said to my friend in the theater with me, "THAT'S EXACTLY MY THEORY SINCE I WAS A KID! WTF?! Oh, this is SO COOL!" Then years later (I think 10?), Split comes out and my brother asked if I'd seen it and I said no, but I'd heard good things about it. He said I should really see it, so I sat one night to watch it and HOLY SHIT! ANOTHER one of my theories was put on film and I was so jazzed about it. Didn't even know there was any connection to this movie and when I found out, I was like, "WHAAAAAAT??" My brother knew that I LOVED this movie and this is my favorite M. Night movie, not just because it put my theory on film (although that helped a lot), but just how WONDERFULLY the story is told, with the long shots and thoughtfulness of the characters' real world lives. I emailed him after and was like, "You BASTARD! Thank you for not telling me Split was connected." M. Night had said, after Unbreakable came out, that he wanted to do a David Dunn trilogy and this was his origin. I don't know if the idea he had then was what the trilogy turned out to be, but I did enjoy all 3 a lot. I have one major issue with the final movie, but barring that, I thought it was really good. I think originally, if I'm remembering correctly, the second movie was going to be David training and honing his abilities, working his way up. The third was supposed to be the big battle/climax, I think. Anyhoo, yes to Signs. I also liked "The Village" and "Lady in the Water," and yes, he did get pigeon-holed (to his detriment) as the "twist guy" so people would judge his movies solely on whether the movie had a twist or if they enjoyed the twist they were waiting for the whole movie. I thought it was an unfair way to judge a movie, but I read that idea did get into his head too much. He had a stretch where his name was chuckled at more than revered and he had to rethink how he did things. Get out of his own head too much. The only ones of his that I've seen that I can't recommend would be "The Last Airbender" and "The Happening." But, The Happening is because of the dialogue is...not good. It came across as goofy to me, but the main concept of the movie, I liked a LOT and sat with me for days. I have seen some people who have liked it, so I'm not telling you NOT to watch it. My issue with it might not be a problem for you.

Great reactions, Jen! For me, this is the best of what has become known as the "Eastrail 177 Trilogy". The subsequent films, in my opinion, ("Split" (2016) and "Glass" (2019)) are only so-so. Although a lot of people heap acclaim on James McAvoy's performance in "Split". But "Glass" has just out and out pissed people off. (me included). I've watched "Split" and "Glass" only once, while I come back to "Unbreakable" every couple of months. Yes, do watch "Signs" (2002). Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, and Abigail Breslin do stellar work in the film. Some people don't like it for a supposed plot hole, but I gather they've looked at the movie as a "Mel Gibson kicks ass on aliens" kind of movie. But as "War of the Worlds" (2005) wasn't a "Tom Cruise kicks ass on aliens" movie, so too this one isn't. There's quite a bit more going on with "Signs" than meets the eye.

Forgot. +1 for Superman Returns (2006)

Jason Scade

Casting my vote for Signs as the next Shyamalan movie, its my personal favorite of his

Lorenzo Turner

You're right, I forgot she's already hit the DCEU. Thanks for the reminder.

Hi, I think Jen has most (if not all) the Henry Cavill Supes up. 👍 I'd love to see Superman III here someday. I agree that compared to how awesome 1 and 2 are, it's a disappointment for the most part but if you like Christopher Reeves / Supes then it's worth seeing once, at least. The abominable Supes 4 is worth watching for the appalling cringe factor of how bad it is... if you have a strong stomach? Fancy seeing Superman and Nuclear Man sissy scratch-fighting each other? :P Have you seen Guy Ritchie's 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare' (2024)? It's absolutely outstanding WWII action. Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson (Reacher), Eiza González (Three Body Problem). I've been bigging it up to Jen since seeing it, it's exactly the type of film that is made for her. I'd say 'Ministry..' is Guy Ritchie's 'Inglourious Basterds'. I've watched it 3 times and dying to see it again. It has a killer, tense 8 min opening scene to it which I've watched umpteen times. Dynamite!

Jason Scade

Loose connection, I quite enjoyed supernatural horror 'Devil' (2010). The screenplay by Brian Nelson was from a story by M. Night Shyamalan.

Jason Scade

I do enjoy this movie very much, and even more so "Split". I have seen both multiple times. That said, I've only seen "Glass" once and I honestly can't remember it, except for a few glimpses.

Thomas Yanez

You should watch the third Reeve Superman movie if you want to. But, if you do, then you have established that you are a completionist and are therefore legally obligated to watch "Superman Returns" (serves as an excellent palate cleanser) before you move on to the Cavill Superman movies.

Thomas Yanez

It's superb but very sombre (of course). That's cool re filming some of the scenes, I'd probably have wandered down for a reconnoiter. Some scenes for World War Z (the initial street outbreak chaos) and that most recent awful Indiana Jones film were filmed here in Glasgow but I was on shift for the former and disinterested in the latter.

Jason Scade

I'd like to see Supes Returns here someday. :)

Jason Scade

Great reaction to one of my favorite Shyamalan films! Absolutely love the subject matter he chooses to explore for each of his films and the fact that he isn’t afraid to take chances with his subjects. I also like the way he takes an auteur-like approach to film-making in general. So, when Jen chooses to react to one of his films, I am SO there! As you might have guessed… I’m a big fan of M. Night Shyamalan as a director, have been from the beginning. Sure some of his films can be “hit or miss” with both the public and the critics, but I can honestly say that I don’t dis-like any of his pictures. Most of them I think are great… yeah, a few not so. But I don’t HATE any of them. Can’t really say that about every director. I can re-watch any of his films at the slightest suggestion… even The Last Airbender or The Happening! 😆

Major Peril

And then follow it up with Superman Returns... just to clear your palette. 🤣

Major Peril

Omfg that Exoskeleton line was GENIUS 😂 Yes, watch Signs. It’s scary, atmosphere and inspirational. Yes, watch Superman III. It may not be good but it has its moments.

Julian San

Oddly i've never seen Atonement, despite the fact they did some filming around the docks here in Grimsby.

Patrick

M. Night is definitely "hit or miss" for me. Some of his films miss me completely, but when he hits, he hits big! My fave's are this one, Split, and Signs. Things I do really like about M. Night: 1) Pacing. I love that he's not afraid to take the time to let you feel everything as his films progress, and 2) Depth. His films are almost never about what they're "about". For example this is a superhero film (as it's premise...) and Signs is about aliens... but not really. At it's heart this film is about "What do you believe about yourself?" (Purpose) - and at it's heart Signs is about "What do you believe beyond yourself?" (Faith) He does keep it interesting most of the time!

Richard Rolen

If Jen didn’t notice, M. Night cameos in the movie, as he does in all his films. He was the the guy David Dunn searched for drugs at the stadium. as an aside, how is that Jen is 5 months pregnant and looks like she hasn’t gained a pound.

Michael Tuffin

ATJ was the prettiest young lady in Hollywood until she got wrapped into the cosmetic surgery cycle.

Michael Tuffin

Oh Yes! Must watch entire trilogy. 😁 As Wiki puts it... "The Unbreakable trilogy, also known as the Eastrail 177 Trilogy, is an American superhero thriller and psychological horror film series. The trilogy consists of Unbreakable (2000), Split (2016), and Glass (2019), which were all written, produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan."

Major Peril

As is 'Atonement' (2007). Romantic war drama.

Jason Scade

Agreed, it's amazing.

samuel Jakob

Gotta watch the whole trilogy!

JFM3

Split is worth seeing just for James McAvoy.

Patrick

Split is a must (Psy horror).

Jason Scade

This is definitely a super-hero movie, just not an action super-hero movie. SPLIT is the next one in this loosely-connected trilogy, and I think is the best of the three. Mainly because I think it's by far the best acting done by James McAvoy. And features Anya Taylor-Joy before she was famous famous. If I were you, I would watch SPLIT no poll, because it is REALLY good. An acting masterclass. Does anyone else here agree?

Mastervodo

The guy Bruce frisks at the stadium because he thinks he might have drugs is the director Shayamalan. I don't think this is now a spoiler as the comments all point this out but the huge twist of Split is that is actually is a sequel to this movie, you don't know that until the final shot.

Andrew Roach

Now you have to watch this movie’s tangential sequels.

Michael Tuffin

This is *probably* my favorite M. Night movie. It's right up there with Sixth Sense and Signs for me. That scene toward the end where David Dunn shows his son the newspaper is one of my favorite scenes in any movie. I also really love the line "Real life doesn't fit into little boxes that were drawn for it." Definitely my favorite "superhero" film, a genre I'm usually not a big fan of, but I like the more grounded nature of this one.

Joel P

I've not seen TLKG but want to, I know it's well regarded action. First viewing with Jen would be huge fun. :D The Last Boy Scout is unmissable buddy/buddy crime action. Hilarious snappy dialog and banter. For me, it's Bruce's Lethal Weapon... I so wish there'd been more than just one. Can't believe I'd never noticed Shane Black in As Good as It Gets before.

Jason Scade

As far as Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson movies go, i'd say you have to watch The Last Boy Scout (Willis) and The Long Kiss Goodnight (Samuel L). BOTH of those movies were written by Shane Black (Cafe 24's manager in As Good As It Gets) 😆

Carlos Perez

Yes, you should definitely watch Signs. It's a good one.

Joel P

If you could only file this in a single category, it would have to be "Shayamalan." Easily one of his best films, and fantastic performances all around.

Lee

Knew you would like this one Jen I'd say put it in superhero if I had to chose. Definitely a unique angle on good vs evil with just great acting . Split is good I think you will like that one for sure , glass is definitely the weakest of the three but worth watching 👍 thumbnail is perfect btw 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Ian

Good choice. I happened to be in Amsterdam when it was released. Happy days and roast chicken dinners in restaurants for "breakfast".

Jason Scade

I really liked this when it was newly released. Will keep this for tomorrow eve, excited for. :D I'd absolutely be watching the 2nd movie, 'Split', if you put it up. It was well received and is great, superb lead performances. I can see #2 getting decent viewing figures. The 3rd one... I don't want to say anything. I would watch it, if you do it.

Jason Scade

I took a movie class in college and had to see a (at the time) new movie in the theater and write a paper about it. This is the movie I chose to see.

Brian Leonard

Hope you had a great weekend, Jen.
