The Last Of Us 1x1 Full Length Reaction

S01E01 When You're Lost in the Darkness

Such a good pilot! FYI I have already finished watching all of Season 1 now so feel free to chat about anything in Season 1, but I have no idea what happens in Part 2 of the game so no spoilers for that! Also I've already been told I shouldn't have called them 'zombies' - I know that will bother some of you - but I definitely did throughout the entire Season, so it is what it is 🤷🧟

Filmed in Alberta btw

I just wanted to chime in that it'd probably best to contain spoiler talk to each episode, regardless of whether you're finished with it already - plenty of folks are bound to watch or even prefer reactions going in blind. I mean, I just skip most discussions regardless if I'm not caught up, just saying that some of us definitely could get spoiled early.

So, the MANDALORIAN carries another kid through another series! 🤣🤣🤣 Coming in late on this one... that was a great opening episode for the show. Gave me the heebie-jeebies watching it the first time when it came out. Loved seeing Anna Torv (Tess) in a TV series again, miss seeing her in Fringe (2008) anymore, that was a great show.

Major Peril

The first episode is a pretty solid representation of the game. Just fleshed out a bit more and the game of course didn't have the 60s interview show. I think they change a few things to maybe make the characters a bit more likeable although i had problem with how Robert was ended in the game. There is one episode that people on both sides of the political spectrum blew up. And that episode is 100% fabricated. Not at all like the game. Doesn't mean it is good or bad but just saying it is 100% different in every way possible from the game. I didn't watch the show when aired. Having played the game 3 or 4 times, I don't think they could have done a better job. Tension all the way through. And yes, you should play the game although don't spend $70 on the PC port. The console remaster is fine. Don't know how much of a gamer you are. People wouldn't shut up about Last of Us so much I had to buy a PS4 several years ago just for 1 dang game. It was worth it. But not the PC port. A 12 year old game should cost as much as a brand new AAA PC game.

TigerMyth

To answer your question, yes you should absolutely play this game. It's a masterpiece. Rolling Stone just came out with a list of the 50 Greatest Video Games of All Time and "The Last of Us" ranks at no. 5. "It can be tough for games to be taken seriously as a narrative medium — but The Last of Us is a perfect example of how powerful it can be when it works. The follow-up to Naughty Dog’s playable action movie Uncharted, it genuinely matches Hollywood’s storytelling potential at every turn. ... It is, bar none, the single most cinematic game ever made." - Rolling Stone 01/2025

I don't think recommending any 'ending' videos on YT is a good idea when there's a bunch of story left for season 2, that's a prime way to get unintentionally spoiled. Just link a video if you want a reaction to it.

People really get upset over this? I didn't point it out to say she was using the wrong term. I mentioned it to hopefully help her have a better understanding and enjoyment of the show. Jen even mentions in her reaction wondering if dead people could turn - and they can't. They aren't "brain dead." They're still living humans, which is horriffic when you think about it and knowing that may allow someone to see the show in a slightly different light. Is this community to toxic that a simple comment like that can't be made without people freaking out over it? If so, this may not be the right community for me to participate in.

John

I get the feeling the description was updated after John's comment, she can't have found out any sooner if the full had only just been posted. And I care enough to complain because to say it's 'important' is ludicrous. Zombie is people's go-to when it comes to braindead people wanting to kill you.

Mark McKeown

So happy you are watching this Jen! I really hope you get another (math... math) 6900 subs from people who are looking to recap Season 1 before Season 2 comes out soon!

Mastervodo

I love Ep3. One of the best episodes of TV, ever, all genres. I've watched that episode dozens of times, with over a dozen reactors. If you aren't moved by that episode, I've really got to wonder where your heart/brain/soul is. Because you may be a soulless succubus. Or incubus. Or maybe sociopath.

Mastervodo

People will always find something to complain about or their lives just aren't complete 😆

Carlos Perez

Thank you so much for watching this series Jen! I was gonna do a rewatch before Season 2 started in April so I’m excited to do my rewatch with your reacts instead . And if you ever play the game. I hope you put it as a lets play.. I’d love to see you tackle the last of us parts 1 & 2

Ciarra Jade

Great reaction Jen! I'm so glad you decided to dive into this series. It's a trip! You were so tense during this episode, I found my anxiety level going up right along with you, even though I've seen it dozens of times!! 😂 Can't wait for the next episode!!

John Courtright

Why can't people just enjoy Jen's reaction without complaining about calling something a zombie 🤷 she can call them chipmunks for all I care I'm here to enjoy her awesomeness and have fun

Ian

last of us is my all time favorite video game, not so much with fallout, but I do like the tv show, a lot

zynjams

I wouldn't say Fallout show story is better but I enjoyed S1 and look forward to S2 in LV. I played several Fallout games and V33 is made up. So it's just like Uncharted and others, showcase some stories with similar characters, action sequence, objects, and the realm but not the story. But definitely recommend Jen react to them too!

Tech Citizen

Good reactions Jen! Since you are OK to discuss Season 1 (game Part I), I'll just list some tidbits in case you haven't come across. Each merit further research if interested: - Intro music is the same from the game! Same composer as well. - The 1968 cold opening is not in the game. That's from Craig Mazin (director/showrunner). The game's cold opening is Joel and Sarah's story during the outbreak. - The show moved the outbreak timeline 10 years earlier, from 2013 to 2003. This allowed the "20 years later" to be show's release time 2023. - There are 4 stages of infection: runner, stalker, clicker, and bloater (for Part I). Runner do mimic initial infection of the ants as well (quick movements). Bloater is the big guy! - Main actors in the game (mocap and voice) are also in the show. Troy Baker (Joel), Ashley Johnson (Ellie), Jeffrey Pierce (Tommy), and Merle Dandridge (Marlene). Merle is the only actor played as her game character in the show! - The creator of the story and the game is also the main writer/exec producer for the show. So many of the scenes, acting sequence, and dialogs are virtually identical to the game and the endings shot-by-shot. This is why this is the best game adaptation bar none. - Episode 3 is not the same as in the game. Both are gold in different ways. It's like an alternative reality where a single choice from Bill/Frank changed their outcome (but not Joel/Ellie's). - Each episode maps to a major chapter in the game! Episode 8 is a DLC of the game, which came out a year later (2014) on Valentine's day. - The last half/third of the show seem rushed, according to many critics familiar with the game. But it was the budget / framework from HBO (I think). This is probably why Part II will spread into multiple seasons. - There is an "alternative ending" featurette on YT. It was gold, but with the game characters. Definitely don't miss it after you reaction / watch the Part I cut scenes or play the game. You could watch it after watching the game ending equivalent to series finale episode. Given you like musical elements, you'll LOVE it! I guarantee it! But many of the game / show fans would love to see your reaction to it! More with each episode release when I can remember more!

Let me try to help with Zombies vs. Infected. In most other shows (e.g., The Walking Dead), the person is already dead and brought to life by ... (e.g., virus). In The Last of Us (TLOU) world, the person still alive but being controlled from fungus infection, hence the "infected". If the person is dead then there is no way the dead person will come back alive as a zombie in TLOU realm. Further, the definition of "zombie" mostly refer corpse re-animated. This is the scary part of TLOU, following scientifically proven fungus controlling ants as plenty of research/documentary on YT showcasing. But, yeah, the behavior of these "monsters" are very similar. Regardless, the main attraction of TLOU is really on the arcs of two main characters. This is why the creators had almost no battle with infected in second half as the focus was on the human stories. The casual fans and some critics voiced their wish to have more "zombies!"

Tech Citizen

Yeah, she said she's "been told" that and I never said she shouldn't call them that. So it's a win for everyone.

John

We need to counter on screen every time Jen says the Z word. I'm going to guess she said it 87 times in this episode alone. 🤣

Andrew

Enjoyed your reaction. Agree there is a lot in this episode.

Clay F

She already acknowledged in her text description above: "I shouldn't have called them 'zombies'."

Clay F

Jen, you are technically not wrong at all to refer to the infected people as zombies so don’t worry about people giving you a hard time about it. Anyone or even anything that is in a zombified state can be referred to as a zombie. If one were to look the word up in a dictionary they’d see that a reanimated corpse is not the only definition of the word zombie. It’s just that the infected people in this show haven’t actually died yet so they aren’t the traditional type of zombies we often see portrayed in movies and television but they are obviously in a zombified state .

Rodrigo

I think you should play the game if you’re interested. It’s one of the best games of all time in my opinion. And while the show is very faithful to the game from a story perspective (and some things are nearly shot-for-shot accurate, especially the driving scene here in episode 1), there are quite a few differences in atmosphere. Since you’ve already seen all of season 1, I can say that the game has a lot more interaction with the infected than what the show does, mainly because that’s where a lot of the gameplay comes from that I think they didn’t really want to bog down the show with - it makes the game more stealth/action which would have made the show more of an action series while clearly they wanted it to be more pure drama. Also, I have to say that while I’m so happy you’re watching this, you picked a heck of a time to do it. I can only imagine watching this series while expecting to become a new parent.

Paul Peavler

I only point out the difference so Jen knows dead people aren't going to turn. In this show they're still alive where most zombies are "undead." Other than that, call them anything.

John

Nice, glad you checked this out! There's very little reason for you to play the video game after watching the show as they basically reproduced 90% of the game for it, almost shot for shot and word for word in some instances.

Jack O

I'm glad you care enough to complain. That's special.

John

fallout should be your next series, just as good or better than the last of us, maybe 8 episodes. based on a video game

zynjams

Who gives a crap

Mark McKeown

She could watch season 2 as it airs and get the 'new show algorithm bump.'

Joe Blankenship

Why wouldn't they be called zombies? That's what they call the ants in real-life that get infected with cordyceps. That's what makes this such a cool concept. Most zombie stuff uses some fictional virus that infects people, but cordyceps is real! It probably won't ever evolve to infect humans, but what if, ya know.

Joe Blankenship

One small but important point - they're not zombies, they're "infected." The functional difference is zombies are undead. Infected are living humans with a fungal infection. When an infected dies, they're dead. There's no coming back from the dead like a zombie. End of nit pick. Feel free to call them zombies, because it really it shown as a zombie flick. They just don't post the same type of threat.

John

it’s one of the most emotionally breaking episodes of TV ever. They just compress trauma into like 70 minutes and terrorize the audience with their feelings. It’s great. Also I’m guaranteed to get smashed. There are plenty of episodes where she might not Cry… but 3… Episode 3 is the doozy. At least to me…

djKENTO

Good call on the timing here. EVERYONE was reacting to this when it came out and it got SO old. It feels refreshing to watch it a year+ later.

Mike Miner

Why limit it only to Ep 3?

John

Here we go...! One of the great things about this series is it's very faithfull to the game without necessarily being an exact copy. Seeing one doesn't ruin your enjoyment of the other but you will notice areas that are nearly verbatim exact copies, while others are vastly different. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman made an amazing team bringing the game to live action.

John

My guess is she knows S2 has not been released.

Clay F

I liked Station Eleven

Clay F

taking a shot every time you cry in episode 3.

djKENTO

You should check out "Station Eleven" its a miniseries also post apocalyptic, definitely one of my favorite shows iv ever seen highly highly highly recommend it, thanks Jen 😊

Matt

Season 2 hasn’t aired yet. Set for April.

Geoff S.

Thursdays just got epic! 🍄

John

I guess that quick DIY job can wait for a bit.
