Did you know that the medal shown here and in the first movie is the Congressional Medal of Honor? That is the highest military decoration in the US, given for extreme courage and bravery at extreme risk to one's own life. They are very rare, usually awarded postumously. Given to a living recipient is EXTREMELY rare. If you recall from the first movie, Miyagi's wife died in labor in the Japanese Internment Camp in Manzanar, California. One of the darker periods in America, the government did not trust the loyalty of Japanese Americans, so they rounded them up and put them in camps. Some men, wanted to prove their loyalty to America, so they joined the Army to serve in WW2. They were not allowed to fight the Japanese - they only served in Europe. They formed the 442nd Regimental Combat Team - and were known for extreme bravery, and were of the most highly-decorated units in Army history based on their small numbers and limited time of service. They just show the medal here in passing, and never really explain it. But it is a really REALLY big deal.

Fun fact: another martial art, Capoeira, is known for being a mix of dance and fighting style. It was brought to Brazil from Angola. The Angolan style, which was more combat-centered, was banned by the Brazilian government, so the practitioners incorporated the former style with more dance/artistic elements to get by the law. It's a very fluid, graceful and unpredictable fighting style. Of course, a lot of martial arts can have some dance element due to fluid movement, but Capoeira takes it to another level.

Long story but I promise it’s good! My grandmother was originally from Okinawa. She met my grandfather during the Korean War and they got married. Her family disowned her at that point. She got pregnant, then at 8 months pregnant she traveled by ship from Japan to California, then aboard a train to NY, where she gave birth to my dad. Fast forward about 40 years, and my grandmother had never spoken to her family since she left. My uncle had to travel to Okinawa for business, so he flies out and chats with the cab driver on the way to the hotel. The cabbie gives him the location of my grandmother’s old village, takes my uncle there, and helps translate and allow him to meet the family for the first time. They wound up calling my grandmother and reconnecting after decades! That was back in the late 90s, and Grandma got to go back and see her family again. It was beautiful. After she passed in 2019, I got a little bit of the money from her estate once we sold her house, so I got the chance to go out and meet the family in Okinawa for the first time. It was a gorgeous island, and it was the best trip of my life. So Karate Kid holds a special place in my heart for the connection to my grandmother and her family. Mr. Miyagi looks like my grandmother’s cousins lol. It’s too bad they filmed this all in Hawaii! So that’s my cool story of why I love the Karate Kid.
