S06E12 Ship in a Bottle
TNG is back baby! I missed our guys so much! This ep was actually awesome, I really enjoyed it. Definitely didn't think we would ever follow up on that Holodeck storyline from Season 2, and I am so glad we got to in this ep! Engage! 🖖

Jen there are unofficial fan made HD upscales for DS9. Several in fact. They are really quite impressive. That could be an option for you. As long as you own the originals, there is no legal issue with downloading and watching them.

Interesting I didn’t know that about the cinematography. I will be getting the DVD box set since the remaster won’t be any time soon apparently. Here it is on Amazon: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Complete Series https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09DMXRCYL/?coliid=IPFR4KY3OY0AU&colid=3NTNZN64C2LEM&psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_lstpd_GMC1VMSQKMZF31025QBA&language=en_US
That reminds me, I’ve seen other reactors post links on their channels to purchase movies and shows they react to and review. I wonder if Jen has thought about that? I’ve bought physical media that I did not have before just to watch her reaction a few times.

I’ve been looking into the video quality issue, how it looks bad even for standard def, etc., and I’ve learned two important things: First, both Paramount and Netflix have some truly miserable streaming transfers. People who’ve watched on both services say it appears to be same crappy source from both. Lots of complaints about the poor de-interlacing and the VHS-like quality. If you watch on DVD, the show supposedly looks significantly better (not DVD movie quality, but no worse than most 90s TV shows on DVD).
Second, it turns out some of that dark and hazy look was an intentional artistic choice. They keep the lights kind of low, and they often did in fact use haze (fake smoke) on the set. The lead cinematographer used those techniques to make the Cardassian-built station look even more drab and run-down. Starting in season 4, a new cinematographer lost most of the smoke and started lighting the scenes better, which helps immensely.

Holo-Geordie has to have one of the saddest off-camera walks I've ever seen.

Until it gets remastered watching it on an old style CRT television would look better. lol You should add the complete series on DVD to your wish list. With a good upscaling blu-ray player that would look better too.

For me as well! If we're talking about the same one. Still a little way to go yet though.

I agree. That's actually the only thing that kinda bothers me, the visual quality isn't great. Kinda looks like there's always a smoky haze over everything. I wish it was super sharp 🤷

Yeah, I've been hoping for remastered DS9 for years and years. Guess I'll keep hoping.

For American sci-fi fans, she may be most recognized from SeaQuest DSV, though I'll always remember her as the romance novelist mother from Troop Beverly Hills (with Shelley Long).

Yes good to be back with TNG. I’m going to like the one of each series method. Ds9 has some great episodes and hopefully Voyager will follow. I just wish they were in hi definition like TOS and TNG. Hopefully remastered versions come out someday.

This one is a good episode. I am glad you liked it.
The one thing that cant escape my mind is that Active Module is now going to be stored on a shelf in engineering or IT somewhere, and gather dust. I know there are more than a few IT departments that have personal PCs hooked up to the network running things that are critical that someone had created in the distant past and they aren't able to transfer or replace the processes.

I have similar thoughts about Moriarty. He's by no means the nefarious villain from the books. He's rather a man who feels trapped and honestly, that report to the Federation scientists likely got ignored. They probably didn't believe he was sentient let alone be bothered trying to research a way off the holodeck given the way Data has been treated.
But by the same measure I don't think he fully grasps how difficult what he's asking for is.
Of course Red Dwarf fans already knew a potential solution and I remember yelling it at the screen during this episode. But that's a whole other universe.

This is my favourite Barclay episode in TNG. He's not having a meltdown or some kind of existential crisis. He's just doing his job and doing it well, showing he's worthy of a place on the Enterprise.
IIRC the long gap between Sherlock Holmes episodes was due to legal wrangles between Paramount and the Arthur Conan Doyle Estate. Paramount thought it was in public domain and it wasn't, and while there were no complaints about TNG's depiction and they just wanted a payment the Estate had bigger issues with another production, so all Sherlock Holmes content from Paramount got stopped while it was resolved by the lawyers.

Alexander Singer was a film & TV director and a completely different person to Alexander Siddig (previously Siddig El Fadil) who plays Dr Bashir on DS9

Nice to finally be back on TNG. I'm still kinda lukewarm on DS9. TNG has been pretty solid for the past 4 seasons whereas DS9 is still trying to get a toehold. However, this all could be an elaborate simulation running on Paramount+ concurrent with a Jen Murray program via YouTube. I'm going to run diagnostics on my computer and see if I can get to bottom of this. Commander, you have the bridge. [walks out through an automatic sliding door]

The actress playing the Countess is Stephanie Beacham. She is a famous British actress. She was in a handful of horror films in the 70s and early 80s, including my favourite Hammer Dracula film, Dracula : AD 1972 (alongside Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing). I think she was also in The Colby's in the 80s (my mum watched that, i didn't), in the very early 90s i loved her in the first British tv series of Cluedo (based on the game Clue, as Mrs Peacock). In the 2000s she starred in our prison drama, Bad Girls as a con woman.

I agree Jen, Troi looks great in a proper uniform. It was actually Marina Sirtis who requested it, so in Chain Of Command they put it in the script to have Jellico order her to wear one.

I was going to say i don't understand how because of what they both represent, and are each brilliant. Yet i did get into DS9 years before TNG myself, but i always planned to watch TNG some day, and obviously did, i just wish it had been a few decades earlier.

This episode was such an awesome surprise back in the day. I loved getting another episode with one of season 2's best guest characters, and I agree that this was the perfect way to wrap up his story.
