Westworld (1973) Full Length Reaction

So unsettling! This one was really cool! It had that unmistakable 70's sci-fi flavor, some really eerie music and a villain that just wouldn't quit! I was really interested to see this since Michael Crichton wrote and directed (fair warning, it is 100% possible I mispronounced his name throughout)! What other 70's sci-fi should we check out?

Absolutely! I'd love that. I don't know, maybe I'm the exception but I also always liked part 2 of Planet of the Apes. Ok, not very much Charlton Heston here but that movie was a traumatizing childhood experience. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Stefan Loferer

A Charlton Heston double feature would be so freaking amazing. We gotta hit that up.

Jeremy Vickers

Soylent green and omega man are amazing

Jeremy Vickers

Futureworld blows !

Jeremy Vickers

I'm 3/4 way through Severance S1, it's intriguing and mysterious.

Jason Scade

Also, he's been in some of the movies Jen's seen: He was the King of Druidia in Space Balls and the Abbott in Robin Hood, Men in Tights.

Chris Biebel

I almost forgot the Black Hole with music by John Barry. It's a very cool movie that came in the wave after Star Wars but is totally unique. Especially the ending.

Great reaction, classic influential sci fi. A massive influence on The Terminator obviously. 14:00 "Vodka martini, twist of lemon." ๐Ÿ˜‚ For slo-mo shoot outs; Sam Peckinpah's 'The Wild Bunch' (1969), it's Reservoir Dogs on horses. Further 70s sci-fi; - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - The Medusa Touch (1978) - The Boys from Brazil (1978) Set in the 70s, wanted Nazi war criminals plot the launch of The Fourth Reich. Based on the novel by Ira Levin (Rosemary's Baby, etc.) Michael Crichton has directed; Coma (1978) The Great Train Robbery (1979) Looker (1981) Runaway (1984) Physical Evidence (1989)

Great reaction to this classic '70s sci-fi. Very happy to see you enjoyed it! Brilliant. ๐Ÿค“ Yul Brynner made for a very menacing killer robot! Even though he had only a few spoken lines, he played it out wonderfully, don't you think? Kudos on recognizing Majel Barret (Nurse Chapel from TOS and Lwaxana Troi from TNG as well as the generalized Federation Computer voice). Some other movies based on Crichton novels (NOT directed by him) would be The Andromeda Strain (1971), Rising Sun (1993), Disclosure (1994), and Timeline (2003). You might also check out The 13th Warrior (1999) based on his novel Eaters of the Dead.

Yeah, Soylent Green would be great :)

Joanthan Skidmore

"Tuesday is Soylent Green Day!"

Jason K

Soylent Green from 1973 would be great. a Sci-Fi classic with Charlton Heston.

Alexis Vorian

Thanks Jen, this was great! The cowboy robot in the black hat was inspired by the same actor's character in the film "The Magnificent Seven" 1960 where he also wore a similar black hat and outfit. Most have mentioned many great sci-fi films from the 70's. One more is the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978 starring Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy.

Steve Holton

The guy you said you knew was from 8 is Enough from the 70โ€™s

Jeremy Vickers

A sequel was made in 1976, Futureworld, starring Peter Fonda.

Jonathan Hintz

Along similar lines, Severance has a lot of the same mysterious vibes, albeit it thematically pretty different. Mystery, alright.

W T

Yeah, I really enjoyed the first season. Never got around to the second season. Sorta seemed like people weren't that into it.

Joe Blankenship

@Jason... my bicameral mind would agree! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Mmm... Some Saturday afternoon Westworld? Yes, please. +1 for all selections below plus The Andromeda Strain (1971), Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970), The Omega Man (1971), Rollerball (1975), and The Stepford Wives (1975) just to name a few! Some other Crichton favorites would be Coma (1978), The Great Train Robbery (1978) and of course Runaway (1984).

Major Peril

Body Snatchers, Soylent Green and The Omega Man are definitely worth checking out! I just remember a weird scifi movie that I saw as a teenager...Demon Seed (1977). Quite a different take on AI and I found it pretty disturbing back then.

Stefan Loferer

Not necessarily sifi but "Eraserhead" 1977 in honour of the late David Lynch, RIP

Matt

For sure. It's an enigma in an ocean of mystery!

Jason Scade

Take an enormous bong rip and settle in for the French animated sci-fi psychedelic masterpiece FANTASTIC PLANET.

djKENTO

Sweet๐Ÿ˜Š

Matt

Logan's Run is on my channel

Jen M

The original! Nice! S1 of HBOs Westworld is completely worth it btw. Goes so far beyond the movie.

PIG

Solaris 1972 Silent Running 1972 Fantastic Planet 1973 Logan's Run 1976

Matt

'The Omega Man' 'Soylent Green' 'The Man who Fell to Earth' that's my trio! :)

Celeste McAllister

Silent Running, Soylent Green, Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Randy Aiken

Outland would make a GREAT HBO drama.

djKENTO

Outland with Sean Connery is good but itโ€™s very early 80โ€™s. Saturn 3 with Farrah Fawcett is weird and probably not anyoneโ€™s favorite. Battle Star Galactica was a great series that only lasted a season I think. The theme music rivals any of the Star Trek ones too!

Geoff S.

Excited for this, haven't seen it in a droid's age.
