Mars Attacks! (1996) Full Length Reaction

Great reactions, Jen! The movie is based on the Topps Trading Cards of the same name. I’m not aware of any specific references between this and older science fiction movies with one exception. The flying saucers, when in flight, are pretty much the same as the alien spacecraft in “Earth vs. The Flying Saucers” (1956). While the ones in this movie are computer-generated, the ones in “Earth vs. The Flying Saucers” were done using stop-motion animation. Ray Harryhausen was the master of stop-motion animation, and his talents can be seen in many movies of the 50s and 60s. My personal favorite sequence of his is in “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963) when Jason and his men battle the animated skeletons.

Supposedly, when they signed up Jack Nicholson, the studio execs told Tim Burton that his character couldn't die. So Tim Burton had him play two roles and killed both of them so that he died twice in the film. The music that killed the Martians was by a guy named Slim Whitman. For those of us old enough to remember when there was a lot of late light campy TV with really bad commercials, there were always a ton of commercials advertising records by Slim Whitman, with the announcer saying "Beloved by millions!" Most people I know basically said, "Really?" That's part of the joke. The grandmother was in Beetlejuice, too. She was the case worker for Gina Davis and Alec Baldwin. This movie has at least 3 Oscar winning actors in it (although Natalie Portman obviously hadn't won hers yet), with Jack Nicholson, Rod Steiger, and Natalie Portman, plus Glenn Close who is tied with Peter O'Toole for most nominations without a win (8).
