Belated comment having just seen this on YouTube: There's a scene in Terminator 2 that always reminds me of True Grit. 🤔 The Quiet Man (1952) is an interesting non-western movie, also North to Alaska (1960) more gold rush than western, was a favourite of my Mum's (she had the hots for teen idol but not a great actor Fabian) and it veers into romantic comedy a little. I'd probably give The Conquerer (1956) a miss. John Wayne as Ghengis Khan is beyond cringeworthy, as well as it being filmed down wind of a nuclear test site. Widely considered amongst the worst movies of all time.

I notice people mentioning The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance… I couldn’t agree more. I Love True Grit but I don’t think it qualifies as a classic western in that the period of the classic western was earlier. Stagecoach is the film that established John Wayne as a movie star… and it’s incredibly entertaining (requires tolerance of its depiction of indigenous people… a serious problem in the genre). The Searchers takes the problem on: Wayne play an embittered racist. My favorite western is The Ox Bow Incident starring Henry Fonda. It’s unusually enlightened.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a classic John Wayne Western. It also has Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin, and an awesome theme song sung by Gene Pitney. Another great John Wayne movie, though not a Western, is The Quiet Man with Maureen O'Hara. It was also directed by John Ford, so it has a lot of the pre-Spaghetti Western fun, even though it's set in Ireland.
