I am one of the one's who loves this movie. It is made in the way it is to create an "ending" from true life events. The natural place to put the "end" is with the detonation of the bomb as most movies about this event do. Nolan tried to make the ending about, as you correctly deduced, the impact the detonation had on the world. This happened at different times for each of the character threads. Otherwise the ending would have just been Oppy gets an award... not a very strong cinematic ending. But making the ending the answer to the mystery of the Einstein conversation makes for a very satisfying ending.
